I went to see the Fantastic Four without much enthusiasm, but I unexpectedly loved it.

-There is an English translation at the bottom of the text-

The World is on Summer Vacation

It's summer vacation time. At the movie theater, you see people posting things like, "First time seeing a movie in a theater!" or "Haven't been to the movies in years! ✨" They're lining up two drinks and taking selfies in front of the posters. Imagining a future where this benefits movie theaters and allows them to show more films... it's a heartwarming sight.

Even so, I was a little hesitant to jump into the movie theater during this "summer vacation" period. But after seeing the TOP image and title of the [Fantastic Four] article on note, I realized I was at the movie theater. And what do you know... perhaps because of Kyoto's location and the fact that it was a subtitled showing, over 10% of the audience were foreigners.

Being able to watch the film in that environment, and feeling the desire of those who thought, "I absolutely want to see this on the big screen, even in a foreign land," raised my expectations for the film even before it started.

-My film selection process-I try not to input any prior information and judge whether to watch a film based only on the poster or thumbnail image.

-When writing-When writing spoiler-free impressions, I keep it under 140 characters.
Even when writing spoiler-filled impressions, I don't write a detailed synopsis.
Before talking about the movie, I write "My Story" as a self-introduction, as it will be relevant later.

I practice this every time.

Before the Movie Story: My Story

(From Marvel's website)

Overseas Dramas and Movies I Watched at Home

Besides movies, I also love watching overseas dramas. Especially around the time when everyone was being told to stay home due to COVID, I was one of the people who newly subscribed to Netflix, which saw an increase in subscriptions.

Taking advantage of the stay-at-home situation, I endlessly watched all sorts of Netflix Originals (Netflix's own productions) – various overseas dramas and movies. Furthermore, at the time, subscription-based works were being shown in theaters and nominated for Academy Awards. It was a moment when what I thought of as common sense – that movies are released in theaters and then become available for rent on DVD – was turned upside down.

[Anne with an E] A drama about Anne of Green Gables
that also touches on social issues, making it worth watching.
[Marriage Story] It was also released in theaters, so people other than Netflix subscribers had the opportunity to see it. It was the first work in which I knew Adam Driver other than Kylo Ren from [Star Wars]. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

[The Two Popes] Nominated for an Academy Award. I also recommend [The Pope's Exorcist], which was released this year.

During the stay-at-home period due to COVID, there was nowhere to spend money. Even I, who had a policy of not increasing the number of things in my house and whose motto was "If I put a sofa in my house, that's the end," bought a sofa and spent my days immersed in movies.

Among those, the one I was most obsessed with was [The Crown], which was rumored to have been watched by the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. It's similar to a Taiga drama in Japan, but what's surprising is that it's doing the same thing as depicting living members of the Imperial Family in a drama, if you were to replace it with Japan.

Almost all of the people themselves appear in the drama, so it's surprising.

Of course, there are parts based on historical facts and parts that are fictional. It depicts everything from when Elizabeth II became queen to almost the present day.

I was on the sofa in my apartment room for so long that I wanted to breathe fresh air. As a result of thinking about how to change my mood and experience the outside world inside the house without opening the window, I spread a leisure sheet on the veranda, threw a lot of cushions on it, and ate meals outside. Even then, I was watching movies.

When I see this poster of three actresses playing Elizabeth II over several seasons, I am reminded of the Koshino family [Carnation], which depicted a designer family in the morning drama.

While people around the world were quietly fighting the virus with medical professionals risking their lives, I was in an apartment room in Kyoto watching movies and overseas dramas... connecting with the world and the outside world.

One of My Favorite Actresses

I loved Elizabeth II's sister Margaret in The Crown. Contrary to the princess image of "a good, well-behaved, and beautiful person," she does the opposite. Margaret, who smokes, drinks, sneaks out of the palace, and is immersed in love. I was drawn to her humane behavior and lines.

I don't think I was able to recognize this actress until I watched [The Crown].

[Roman Holiday], which is modeled after the late Queen Elizabeth's sister Margaret. I think this is the work in which I knew Audrey Hepburn when I was a child.

I liked her free behavior in the story, but I was drawn to her voice. I often watched overseas dramas dubbed in Japanese when I was doing housework, drying laundry, or stretching, but I watched them with subtitles because I wanted to hear her voice.

Moreover, I watched The Crown twice throughout all seasons. The first time, I watched it without moving from the sofa. The second time, I was doing housework, flying my consciousness to England, where I had visited. Lol. I was sometimes immersed in The Crown to add sparkle to my daily life.

When I write this far, it looks like I'm a big fan of her, but... I often don't know what her new movies are. That may be because I don't put in any prior knowledge when watching movies. However, even if I'm told that Vanessa Kirby is in it, I usually reply, "Who's that?" and only say "Oh" when I'm told "That person from The Crown."

Moreover, even if I hear "Vanessa Kirby is in it" three days ago, when I sit in front of the screen and the movie starts and she comes out, I say, "Yay! She's in it!" so I don't think I'm a real fan of her... (Maybe I just have a problem with my memory... lol)

I went to see [Napoleon] after hearing Ridley Scott, and I was able to endure it because she was in it. Maybe it was just that I didn't get along with the person next to me in the theater.

Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

There is an image that is strongly burned into my memories from my childhood. Even now, when I look back at the photos, the power is amazing, but the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's exhibits were on display in Japan. It was in the summer of 1994, and the place was Makuhari Messe. I remember the exhibits hanging from the ceiling from a slightly lower position from the stroller as a video image.

The T-shirt I bought at the time is still at home. They probably bought me a size 150 so I could wear it for a long time. Surprisingly, I can still wear it with room to spare. Lol

(From Marvel HP)

The scenery I remember seeing from the stroller at the time was the figure of an astronaut seen between the heads of adults. To be exact, I didn't know such a name at the time, but it was an exhibition of spacesuits.

Even though I was looking at it from below the adults' point of view at Makuhari Messe in Japan... that scale at Makuhari Messe in Japan. What would happen if I actually went to the Smithsonian Museum? It's one of the places I definitely want to go before I die.

I don't know anything about space shuttles or space, but... "I absolutely, absolutely want to go," or rather, I'm going.

The Astronaut's Eyes

There was a coffee shop I used to go to at work. I could eat a full lunch and coffee at a bargain price, and many elderly people from around the workplace came to eat. It was also a social gathering place for old ladies and grandmothers beyond just gossip.

I noticed a newspaper article placed in the store, and I remember talking to my colleagues until lunch was served as if it were yesterday. The front page of the newspaper had news about a new Japanese person going to space.

I've seen many space movies, and [Interstellar] is by far the best. I'm happy to see how books are used because of my job, but... I want to put the movie about the story of a father and daughter in the top 10 movies of my life.

"People who become astronauts are amazing, aren't they? They pass all sorts of tests and training..." I said, and an unexpected answer came back. "There's something even more amazing, though... the astronauts' eyes." I was like "????" the whole time. "Well, in Japan and overseas... everyone's eyes are clear and there's no malice at all." Then I remembered the faces of various astronauts, taken in front of a fuzzy background like an American graduation album photo.

From that moment on, I gained

a perspective I had never paid attention to before, and it felt like my world had expanded a little... like my viewpoint had become higher. It was a corner seat in front of the toilet in a small, old coffee shop, but I can still remember the feel of the table on my arm, the water droplets on the cup, and the sound of the siphon coffee.

Since that conversation, I've made it a habit to look at astronauts' eyes, but I've never seen anyone with malice hidden in their eyes. There isn't even a millimeter of shadow in their pupils.

What I respect even more is that the trials that befall astronauts are not the training or tests before floating in space... but after returning to Earth. The weight of gravity the moment they land on Earth after spending a long time in zero gravity. As a countermeasure against that gravity, even astronauts who never stop training in space can't walk, they say.

Furthermore, it also affects their minds. The sight of the Earth itself from beyond the Earth's horizon, from far above where you can go by airplane. They feel that they are something far smaller, and are overwhelmed by something that transcends life.

Due to that overwhelming feeling, some astronauts become depressed even after returning to Earth (according to an interview with a Japanese person who actually went to space). What is the scenery that overwhelms them, no matter how much training they have, no matter how clear their eyes are...? It's supposed to be the same Earth they live on, walk on, but... just by changing the viewpoint, it feels like a Pandora's box that shouldn't be opened.

I like [Doctor Sleep], the sequel to [The Shining], because I think it's a story about human nature and telepathy, not horror. An imaginary box to confine my weaknesses. I don't feel it's horror, but it's possible that I'll end up crying and saying "It's not painful" when it's painful, so... watch it at your own risk.

Paris Hotel and Star Wars Celebration

When I was in high school, I went to Paris and London. I think it was about 10 days in total.

I was surprised when the Rosetta Stone I saw at the British Museum later appeared in my world history textbook.

I became a little friendly with the hotel man at the hotel I stayed at in Paris. Since it was France, he also spoke English as a second language. I'm terrible at English, so... I just smiled, but my mother, who was traveling with me, was fluent in English but used to native pronunciation. Therefore, I could only pick up a few words of the heavily accented Indian or French pronunciation in London, where they spoke English as a second language. There were scenes where I did something like interpreting, saying "Isn't it ○○?" and my mother was able to communicate with the local people.

[Midnight in Paris], which I could put in my top 10 movies of all time.

One of those people was the hotel man in Paris. On the morning of the last day, the day of check-out, I was really sad to leave him. And I wanted to thank him for everything, but I could only say "Thank you..." and I could only give him a paper crane made of origami with teary eyes.

At that time, I vowed in my heart that "I will definitely study English hard," but... I still haven't grown at all. But... what I felt firsthand at that time was not correct pronunciation, or accurate grammar... or the number of words I knew. It was the feeling of wanting to know the other person that allowed me to catch any pronunciation they had. But, perhaps it was because we both had such low levels of English that... there was something that could be communicated because we were both ignorant of difficult words and expressions.

[Amélie], another candidate for my top 10 movies of all time. It's also a good memory to eat crème brûlée at the café that appears in Amélie as a tourist.

From that experience, the hotel man in Paris taught me that it's okay to use something other than language when it's difficult to convey what you want to say. I can still vividly recall the shining eyes he had when he saw the origami crane. Then, almost 20 years later, this spring. I went to Star Wars Celebration. Many people asked me "What is that? What kind of event is it?" after seeing my Instagram posts, so... I want to write about this event someday. Before going to this event, I was taught about the culture of swag. It's a culture where fans exchange handmade goods. I didn't have time to make original goods because I fearlessly rushed into the Star Wars Celebration, which was held during the busiest time of work.

So, I bought small pouches and origami paper at a souvenir shop inside the ticket gate on the Shinkansen from Kyoto. Star Wars is based on Japanese judo uniforms, helmets, armor, and swords. I made a crane from red origami paper from the Rebel Alliance's Starbird, and a helmet from black and gold origami paper from Darth Vader's mask. Then, I put it in a pouch with a Kabuki Kumadori (Kabuki makeup is sometimes copied onto a towel and left behind) design and wrote a self-introduction on the back.

I handed the pouch to my favorite "this person" in the venue where there were tens of thousands of people when I felt that I couldn't convey 100% of what I wanted to say in words. After that, I used the translation function to exchange thank yous and impressions in chat. If I hadn't had that exchange with the hotel man in Paris, I would have just wandered around the venue like a zombie in the midst of my busy season.

After a long period of time... to the hotel man at that time. "Thank you again. I will never forget the frustration and gratitude I felt at that time..."

[Mermaid in Paris] is also a favorite work.

Spoiler-Free Impressions

Four people who gained superpowers as a result of a space flight accident. A new enemy appears to these people who have become even more famous as heroes.

Pay attention to my favorite fashion and interior design sense. Furthermore, I feel warmth not in their behavior as heroes, but in their interactions with their families. I want you to experience the scale at the movie theater. (140 Japanese characters)

Spoiler-Filled Impressions

(Impressions one day after watching)

A Marvel hero movie, right? No, no... no.

The word that attracted me to the title of the note article was family. That's right, it's a family story from beginning to end. More than anything, they are familiar humans rather than heroes from a distant, unrealistic world. Of course, Superman and Iron Man were all originally human, but... they were cool heroes from a distant world to me.

The Fantastic Four shave their beards, chop garlic, and... become sleep-deprived from raising children. They live in high-rise apartments that no tower mansion can match, but they have a sense of familiarity that makes you feel like you could say "Oh, hello" even if they were said to be residents of the next room in the apartment.

What's even more surprising is that Margaret from my favorite drama The Crown, or rather, Sue in this [Fantastic Four: First Steps], has toilet and childbirth scenes. Has such a daily life of a hero, or even milestones in their life, ever been depicted before? I wrote about Superman: Men Falling from Ideals, but I'm not familiar with Marvel or American comic books, so... there may be many scenes of such heroes that I don't know about.

I want the superpower to become transparent. It would be great to be able to live without feeling any gaze in a convenient way.

There were also people from my favorite dramas...

I wrote a lot about Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue, in the "My Story" section, but there were also people from my favorite dramas.

The [Sherlock Holmes] series, a classic that can be said to be a classic from a modern perspective by Conan Doyle. It was dramatized by changing the setting to modern Britain as [Sherlock].

It was the work in which I knew Benedict Cumberbatch, an actor whose fast-talking lines I loved.

I couldn't accept the Fantastic Five baby clothes lol. I felt like they were probably treated as regular members in the comics.

Furthermore... can you believe this expression is the same person? It can be said to be simply a matter of hairstyle, but... the actor who plays the Human Torch and this guy who appears in the Netflix drama [Stranger Things] are also the same actor.

I've seen so many goods with this design on T-shirts.

Father and Son: The Suffering Seen from the Father's Perspective

In Superman: Men Falling from Ideals, I touched on the suffering of "father and son" and wrote about the suffering that would be visible from the son's side. This time, in [Fantastic Four: First Steps], the child is a newborn infant, so the father's image seen from the child's perspective was not written about. However, in contrast to the previous article, the father's fear of the child and the unknown fear of becoming a father were well written.

Every time a child's birthday is celebrated, the expression "parents are also ○ years old" is used, but I learned that the father is fighting alone before the child born and even after they are born. Parents don't know what the child is, or what they will become when they grow up. Of course, there are parents who lay down the rails, but there's no guarantee that it will go that way.

Perhaps, even when the child grows up and becomes an adult... the father may be fighting alone with fear and anxiety about what they will become or what path they will take.

By the way, this scene below... I had watched [Summer Time Machine Blues] the day before, so... I couldn't help but overlap it with Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Fashion and Interior with Great Sense

Since I was little, I grew up on an imported baby mat with Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans printed on it. The oldest memory I have is the image of that baby mat. Furthermore, there were Japanese picture books, but the first picture books I touched in infancy (picture books with numbers and alphabets written on them) were from overseas, bought by my mother at an overseas museum she visited for work.

That's why I'm particular about colors. Not a specific color like "I like red," but I love the combination of colors and the space and images with unified tones. This [Fantastic Four: First Steps] was perfect for me.

Furthermore, it's the fashion sense. I apologize for only using text because I can't find an image that shows the feet, but... the shoes of the spacesuit that are introduced as "a new spacesuit with new radiation countermeasures and defensive power" looked like Converse high-cut sneakers. The balance and design... while retaining the retro feel of the spacesuit I saw at Makuhari Messe when I was little, it matched the colors of the background set... it was my favorite design.

Furthermore, although there are no images that show such a scene, the reporters waiting to interview the four people (including the newborn) who returned from space. Especially the fashion and hairstyles of the women were completely to my liking, and that alone was a happy time. Of course, the individual fashion sense was great, but the tones of everyone gathered as a group as interviewers were naturally unified, so I could watch with peace of mind.

However, to my surprise, there were only 6 people listed as costume designers in the end credits. Of course, it may have only been the members involved in the spacesuits and the four people's uniforms, etc., as things made from scratch. It's different from a fashion coordinator who manages ready-made clothes... (It was a shame I couldn't find it from the end credits.) I was really surprised. Perhaps the comfort of the unified feeling was created because it was designed by a small number of people.

Was there something like a hidden Mickey?

I can't say anything for sure unless I watch the movie again... In the scene near the end, Sue was lying down, and her right foot was bent unnaturally. I couldn't take my eyes off it. It was quite an important scene, but... lol.

I thought it was a recovery position like the one you learn in first aid training or health and physical education... but it's slightly different. It looked like the number 4.

"Maybe... there were 4s hidden everywhere that I didn't notice." It was a scene that made me think that.

Something That Transcends Culture

If you want to learn a language, make a lover from that country. That's what they say.

From the meaning of just one phrase in English that she taught him, he creates a speech to persuade her. It was no longer something cheap like love.

At first, it was just the desire to know. "Are you and your surfboard one?" If you have no interest in the other person, you won't want to know or share anything. He wants to communicate with her. That pure feeling of wanting to know about her eventually reaches her and saves the world.

It was a scene that made me think that if there was a desire to know each other and share various experiences, not only in the movie but also in this real world, it would be better.

When the word "Rosetta Stone" came out in the dialogue, I felt like I was in front of that exhibit at the British Museum... and the images were recalled along with the British air. By the way, a petition has been submitted to Egypt to demand the return of the Rosetta Stone...

The Hidden Power of Parents and Children

The expression "mother's hidden power" is often referred to as "firefighter's strength," but do you know the story of lifting a car? It's an episode where a mother is able to lift a car that she would not normally be able to lift when her child is trapped under the car.

I was reminded of such an episode in the scene near the end of [Fantastic Four: First Steps].

(It seems to be designed on the popcorn cup lol) This guy from [Fantastic Four: First Steps].

Am I the only one who saw this as this guy from [Wicked]...? Maybe it's the other way around? Maybe [Fantastic Four] was the original source.

Furthermore, the power that was hinted at in the son. Is it a healing power that can revive the dead? It may have just not been depicted, but the fact that there were no scenes of Sue having morning sickness... and that there were no scenes of her recovering after childbirth was understandable.

In Europe and the United States, where painless childbirth is mainstream, there are studies that show that postpartum recovery is much faster than in Japan due to skeletal differences. Perhaps it has nothing to do with Sue, who has superpowers in the first place.

As a Result...

I know I'll be scolded by passionate fans from both sides, but I, who can't distinguish between Star Trek and the Fantastic Four, went to see it after seeing the word family in the note article... and I was able to meet a hero who I felt the closest to and could sincerely say "I like the most."

A further harvest was that, as I wrote in the previous Superman article, I didn't get sleepy at all during the battle scenes. Was it because of the coffee I had been drinking until just before...? Or was it because they took the common-sense measure of evacuating civilians to the basement...? Or is it because they fight with their own power at the same size as themselves, even if there is a gap like Ant-Man, rather than fighting with an impossible scale (by transforming or riding a machine) equal to the enemy...? The verification is impossible.

If there is a sequel, it was a work that made me strongly think that I would "like to go to the movie theater" without drinking coffee to see the four (five) people I have come to love.

Bonus

https://note.com/movieiina/n/nd767f6f720f6

On Note, someone thoughtfully liked my [F1] article after I liked theirs. They had even read my article and left a comment expressing what they resonated with. Just discovering someone on Note who had seen the same movie as me was exciting, but to receive a comment... Thank you so much!

Furthermore... I even encountered someone on Note who, like me, fell in love with Joe after watching [Medium]. I was so happy that I left a comment, and they kindly replied. I was truly delighted.

And then, I visited the scorching hot Yagi House in Kyoto, bringing with me the episode about the newspaper article I wrote in elementary school, which I mentioned in my Superman post, and which ended up being recognized.

After seeing a National Treasure, I also participated in a backstage tour of the Minamiza Theatre...
Writing articles is not the only thing, but my experiences on Note are definitely expanding my range of activities in real life.
