My Rules for Writing About Movies

In my first note about movies, "Substance," I lightly touched upon my rules for writing about movies on Note (a Japanese blogging platform). So, here are my rules for writing about movies on Note:

  • When writing a spoiler-free review: Keep it under 140 characters.

  • When writing a review with spoilers: Don't go into too much detail about the plot.

  • Before talking about the movie: I always write about myself as an introduction, with stories that will later relate to the movie.

Before Talking About the Movie: A Story About Me

Rakugo (Traditional Japanese Comic Storytelling)

When I was a child, music was often playing at home, but for a while, it was rakugo. Even if I didn't understand the content of the stories, I found the male voice comforting, and I would often listen intently. As I got used to it, I became interested in the stories themselves, listening with a "hmm, hmm." My mother would be doing the dishes and burst out laughing. One night, before bed, it was our routine to have a picture book read to me, but for some reason, I said, "I want rakugo." My mother, probably just because she didn't want to go and put on a rakugo recording, started doing rakugo herself. (By the way, I'm writing this episode on a reserved seat train, and the image of her doing that was so funny that I started laughing. The lady across the aisle gave me a suspicious look. Sorry! I couldn't help it.)

I can't remember what the original rakugo story was about, but it was about someone who handled money, like a banker, who lost money and was incredibly troubled. My mother's way of telling it in a funny way was so hilarious that I couldn't sleep.

The other day, I was waiting for the elevator on the first floor of my company. When the doors opened, a banker-like person on a customer visit didn't get off. He didn't even notice me and was saying, "Ah, I forgot to say it!" while holding his head in his hands like in a manga. When he noticed me, he gave a wry smile and said, "Oh, ah, sorry! I'll just go back." So, I got on the elevator.

This incident reminded me of the overseas medical drama [Grey's Anatomy] where elevator scenes appear so often.

Having worked in the bookstore and publishing industries, I was shocked when I came across [Gray's Anatomy] after starting to work, and I almost dropped the ridiculously expensive product.

I asked the banker-like person, "Are you okay?" He said, "I forgot to tell the client something important. Ah, it's hard to say... hard to go back..." He really seemed reluctant, so as I got off, I said, "Good luck!" He replied weakly, "Thank you..." I got off the elevator first, and I haven't seen him since, so I'm quite curious about what happened.

His expression, his pathetic smile... it couldn't help but remind me of the rakugo I heard from my mother when I was a child.

Sometime ago, my mother recommended me a drama that was so interesting [大豆田とわ子と3人の元夫 - Oomameda Towako and Her Three Ex-Husbands]. The actor, who played ShinShin, gave such a great performance in the movie [国宝 - National Treasure] that it rivaled the performance of a female impersonator. I learned in the process of image searching that it was originally a manga, so I want to read it sometime.

[落語心中 - Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju], like [大豆田とわ子と3人の元夫], is a drama about rakugo. I watched a little of [タイガー&ドラゴン - Tiger & Dragon], written by Kankuro Kudo, on a streaming service before, and I was surprised by how Aoi Yuu was acting as someone other than Aoi Yuu.

I had the opportunity to see and hear such familiar rakugo live. My boyfriend in college took me to a yose (rakugo theater). It was apparently called Asakusa Engei Hall, which I found out by looking it up now.

Before going, we ate tendon (tempura rice bowl) at Daikokuya. Looking back, it was a very mature date, but at the time, I was thrilled with the best date course. He was a kind guy who would borrow [Beauty and the Beast] from a rental DVD shop when I said I wanted to watch it for Christmas, but he would bring back [Sleeping Beauty] instead. (I couldn't have imagined that Disney+ would exist back then.) Even for him, it was the best date course that knew my tastes the best, even now.

I thought I was familiar with rakugo, but after becoming a working adult, I had fewer opportunities to listen to it or go see it. That's when I learned about the existence of social rakugo. Working adults were performing rakugo! They performed classic rakugo stories passed down from ancient times, and they also created their own original rakugo. I heard it once, and it was quite interesting. When I moved to Kyoto for work, I had the opportunity to see and hear rakugo live again.

Rakugo spoken in the Kansai dialect is called Kamigata rakugo. You can listen to such Kamigata rakugo at a yose in Osaka called Tenma Tenjin Hanjotei. Even if you've never heard rakugo, it's interesting, so if you're nearby, please go.

My mother, who used to perform rakugo for me in bed, came to stay at my house in Kyoto. When she was looking up places to go, she saw a yose on the map and said, "Let's go to Hanjotei!" Before she could change her mind, I quickly bought tickets online, and we went out in the melting summer heat. There were many performers and storytellers in the daytime show, and we left Hanjotei after a fun time.

I was so entertained that I decided, "I'm definitely going again by myself," but then COVID happened, and years passed without me going at all. But recently, I was finally able to go again. This time, it was the night show, and I arrived just in time after work. But since Friday night was the only time I could go that week, I decided to send the emails I had to send on the train on the way home and made a dash for it right at the end of my work day.

I barely made it in time and enjoyed the rakugo. During the intermission between rakugo performances, I was handed a pamphlet, but I hadn't had time to look at it because I arrived so late. As I flipped through some flyers for the next yose performance, I saw a large picture of Mr. Morio Kazama, who has been reading Harry Potter audiobooks that I have been listening to non-stop while driving recently!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! In my head, I was in a mini-panic in my seat, thinking, "Eh?! Wait, was he a rakugo storyteller?! Is this common knowledge that I just didn't know about???" That day, the last story was a ninjo-banashi (human drama story) that I heard live for the first time. I never thought I would be leaving Hanjotei feeling sentimental after laughing so hard, and I walked through the wintery streets of Osaka in a daze, like after leaving a movie theater.

All 7 volumes and over 150 hours of audiobooks have quickly reached the 3rd volume, [Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban]. I can't wait to drive every day.

When I looked it up on the train on the way home, I found out that Mr. Morio Kazama had played a rakugo storyteller in a stage role in the past, and now he even has some of his own material.

Mr. Morio Kazama, who plays everything from Hermione to the ghost poltergeist in Harry Potter, thought "amazing" every time a new character came out, but knowing that he also does rakugo, I understood his acting skills. I definitely want to hear Mr. Morio Kazama's rakugo at a yose sometime.

Grandfather's and Grandmother's Watches

There are things that I absolutely cannot let go of. They are my grandfather's and grandmother's watches. I wore a watch for the first few years after I started working, but now the summers in Kyoto are too hot, and I can't wear anything that touches my skin unless it's 18K or 24K gold because I'm allergic to metal. (Metal allergies cause skin irritation due to a chemical reaction between sweat and metal.) From there, I lost the habit of wearing a watch, and now I hardly ever wear one.

I don't wear watches, but I treasure these watches that I keep carefully. The watches that my grandfather and grandmother each wore. I used to wear them often when I was working in Kanto. But it's been years since I came to Kyoto... They've been stored away all this time. Actually, if I painted clear manicure on the metal parts, the metal wouldn't touch my skin, so I wouldn't have an allergic reaction... But I don't have the courage to paint manicure on the watches I received from my grandparents who are no longer here.

Such watches have also run out of batteries and stopped. I've heard that it's not good for the watches to leave them stopped, or that it's not good feng shui... But I remember what the watch shop said before, "It's an old, good watch, but it's hard to find the parts and the right battery." I'm too lazy to take it to a watch shop in Kyoto, so it's been sitting there.

18th Birthday

My father passed away when I was 9 years old, a month after my birthday. For the next few years, I was just trying to survive, but then I suddenly had something I was truly afraid of. It was forgetting my father's voice and turning 18.

I think it was around the time I was in elementary school. One day, I felt like my father's voice calling me was fading away. I absolutely didn't want that, and I desperately tried to remember it. I had never expected something like that to happen to me. I desperately watched home videos.

It was still okay to not forget his voice because there was a solution. What was more frightening was that the number of years after my father's death would be longer than the time I spent with him. I had never thought of that, but I heard a line in a drama or something like, "I'm the same age as my deceased father now," or I heard my mother telling someone that she was about to catch up to my father's age. I can't remember exactly. But from then on, I was afraid of turning 18. As I got older, I realized, "Wait, since my memories of my father from when I was little are from when I was around 3 years old... If I'm strict, it's not my 18th birthday, but earlier that the years I haven't been with my father will be longer than the period I spent with him." I often thought about that.

When I was in the first year of junior high school, I was eating lunch with my friends during lunch break when one of them pointed at me and said, "You look melancholy." I didn't even know what melancholy meant at the time, so I asked her, "What's that? What does it mean?" Even knowing the expression melancholy in the first year of junior high is impressive, but it was probably the perfect expression to describe me at the time.

Indeed, there probably aren't many junior high school students who are afraid of getting older rather than thinking, "It's my birthday!" When my mother showed me [Leon: The Professional] for the first time, she looked back on me when I was in elementary school and said, "You were like Matilda from Leon." That also left a strong impression on me.

What kind of child did people around me see me as...?

Spoiler-Free Review

In the future, the way we live now is no longer the norm. Strange things start happening in the home of a three-generation family living in such a world.

The fast pace and grand scale make the running time feel short. On the other hand, the depiction of the family relationship is careful. It's a work that can be enjoyed not only on the first viewing but also on the second and subsequent viewings. If you have the chance, see it in the theater. (140 Japanese characters)

Review with Spoilers

Wait, he was in it?!

When I learned that [Interstellar] was being re-released in theaters, I decided that I would definitely see it. Moreover... It's being shown in a 400-seat theater with one of the largest screens in Japan, over 18 meters high and over 26 meters wide, which is equivalent to a 6-story building??? There's no way I wouldn't go. I was looking forward to the day when online ticket sales started. It was supposed to start at midnight two days before, so I was waiting, but I realized it when my 6 AM alarm went off the next morning. I rushed to access the site, and there were only 3 seats left. I had never seen anything like that.

I tapped my phone in bed, worried until I reached the ticket purchase completion page. I successfully got a ticket for the afternoon showing. I ate breakfast at an awkward time and missed the timing to eat lunch, so I decided to buy popcorn. I was surprised when I entered the theater. About 200 people were waiting in line to enter. The line to buy popcorn was also quite long. While I was standing in the long line at the concession stand, I heard the two people behind me. "I've seen Interstellar four times." "Eh, haven't you seen it too much?" "I've seen it in IMAX three times." "Eh, 3 out of 4 times in IMAX is strong, isn't it?" I hesitantly looked at the two of them when I finished buying popcorn and turned around, and they were two young men in their twenties, much younger than me.

I thought, "Is it possible to see a movie in the theater four times?" But they were younger than me... [Interstellar] was released 10 years ago. I became excited about [Interstellar], which captivated him so much. I saw it in IMAX when it was released, but I only remembered crying too much, the hospital bed, the curved town seen from the hospital, and the depiction of the bookshelf.

I only had sad memories... As I wrote in my previous article [Princess Mononoke], I don't have any memory of before and after dancing the solo in gymnastics, which became a trauma... [Interstellar] was such a traumatic movie. So, I had been avoiding watching it until now. It was my favorite movie, and I thought I could put it in my top 10 favorite movies of my life, but it was a movie I absolutely didn't want to see more than [La La Land]. But if it was playing in the theater, I definitely wanted to see it, so I took the courage to make a reservation in bed at 6 AM.

So, their conversation made me look forward to seeing it. I was surprised when the movie started. It was a long running time, and even though I didn't remember it very well, I had seen it once, so I was worried, "What if I get sleepy?" But that wasn't the case at all. I was so surprised by the scene of running through the wheat field that my eyes almost popped out. I was also surprised that there was a movie that used military drones as a theme even a little bit 10 years ago.

Was that humorous and amazing AI robot there? I thought AI had become familiar to me recently, so I was surprised by the prophetic 10-year-old movie.

And what surprised me most was... the cast. I barely remembered that Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway were in it... But when I was staring closely at the disappearance scene in the car, I thought, "Is that... no way." But it was. Timothée Chalamet was so young!

Furthermore, John Lithgow, who played Arthur in [Kingsman]... and was cast as Dumbledore in the [Harry Potter] drama, as soon as he came out, I was as surprised as when I learned that Mr. Morio Kazama would be appearing in a rakugo yose.

Inside the House

A little while after my father passed away... I was doing my homework in my room when I felt a gaze. My mother was at work. No one should be home. But it wasn't just once. Someone was definitely standing and watching. At first, I didn't know what it was... and I was so scared that I would often turn around and confirm, "There's really no one there." But gradually, I got used to the situation, and the fear disappeared, and it became normal. I had never had any psychic abilities, but I didn't tell anyone for a long time because I thought people would think I was crazy.

Then, when I became a working adult, I watched [Interstellar]. Maybe I really had been crazy for years because of the shock of my father's death. But when I watched [Interstellar], I started to think strongly that maybe it was my father. Rather, I remember that it was a kind movie that made me think that even if I thought so, there would be scientific grounds and it would be within the normal range.

Something I Know Where It Is

Even if I leave the house, or one of my socks gets swallowed by the washing machine's black hole... there's something I absolutely know where it is in my head. It's the watches I received from my grandparents. By the way, the 101 Dalmatians watch I received for the first time when I was little is also stored away.

The dial on the watch I received from my grandfather is too big for my wrist. But I like the camel belt and the gold trim. And it's a design that a Parisian madame would wear. Even if Murph hadn't been home for many years, and even if she hadn't returned to the family home with the watches for many years, she definitely knew where they were. As proof, she found the watches in an instant without even looking for them.

It was a scene that made me want to try wearing those watches again, even if I don't save the world.

Birthday I Was Worried About in the Back of My Mind

My father passed away when I was 9 years old, but my father himself passed away at the age of 50. So, when Murph said in a video message, "I'm the same age as you now," I was so overwhelmed that it was hard not to cry out loud.

After turning 18, the time I spent with my father grew longer and longer than the time he wasn't there. I don't feel afraid anymore... I was in a state of resignation that it couldn't be helped. What's always in my head, as much as "the watches are stored there," is that I would surpass my father's age.

I had heard that the reviews weren't good, so maybe that's why I was glad I saw [Buzz Lightyear] in the theater because my expectations were low.

[Interstellar] was also what wrapped me up and told me that getting older isn't bad, it's not something to feel guilty about.

And I thought that [Interstellar] was being re-released nationwide, but... I was able to see this movie [Interstellar] in the theater for the first time in 10 years because... It was the anniversary event of the movie theater, and [Interstellar] and [How to Train Your Dragon] were chosen as the top choices in the re-release survey. To the people who voted, and to the staff of 109 Cinemas in Expo City who gave me the opportunity to see this movie again, thank you very much.

Bonus

A Movie That Looks Like [Princess Mononoke]

Since writing about [Princess Mononoke] last time, the screenings have been expanded to Dolby Cinema, and I went to see it again. This time, I saw various new lines and expressions that I hadn't seen the first time I saw [Princess Mononoke] in the theater. I was a little scared, thinking, "I just saw it in IMAX the other day, so what if I get sleepy?" But that wasn't the case at all, and I was able to enjoy it until the end.

I watched [Frankenstein] and [Predator: Badlands] at the movie theater before and after the Dolby [Princess Mononoke]. I deeply regretted not seeing [Marriage Story] in the theater before. Since then, I've been trying to see movies in the theater as much as possible, even if it's confirmed that I can watch them at home on Netflix later. As a result, I've never regretted it.

So, I wanted to see [Frankenstein], but when I learned that Guillermo del Toro was directing it, I decided, "I'm definitely going to see it." Guillermo del Toro is the director of [Pan's Labyrinth], a traumatic movie that I remember being taken to the movie theater with excitement by my mother, who told me it was a fantasy when I was in junior high school. Guillermo del Toro, who left a strong impression, did a drama [Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities] on Netflix, and I watched it with fear a few years ago... and it was so interesting. Guillermo del Toro's drama was a drama that betrayed my expectations in a good way.

So, I was looking forward to seeing [Frankenstein] in the theater, not with fear.

I was writing about [Princess Mononoke] when I started watching it, so every scene looked like [Princess Mononoke]. It's a little grotesque, but it's a medical drama, and it's a recommended movie for people who like [Princess Mononoke].

Next, I want to think it was because I watched Dolby [Princess Mononoke] for the second time. But... it's [Predator: Badlands] at the movie theater. I was intrigued when I learned that my favorite Elle Fanning was in it when the trailer played in the theater... But the moment this video played, I thought, "I definitely want to see it."

This is that video. I might be a little crazy... lol

The moment the movie started in the theater, I thought, "Eh? This feeling is the same as [Frankenstein]..." For some reason, it looks like [Princess Mononoke] from various angles... I asked a senior at work who had already seen [Predator], "I'm curious about [Predator], but how was it? Can I watch it without watching the previous series?" He said, "It's okay without preparation. It's a little like Disney, so there are pros and cons from previous fans, but I recommend it."

For people who haven't seen the [Predator] series and like action, I recommend [Predator: Badlands] at the movie theater.

Cover with Too Much Sense

I learned about this issue from an article by my favorite illustrator on Instagram, saying that they drew an illustration for Popeye.

You chose [C'mon C'mon], a movie that I can put in my top 10 movies of my life following [Interstellar], for the cover. You're the best. The December issue of Popeye has so much information that I can't finish reading it at all.

The project that introduces movies released every year in the 21st century is made so carefully that it's listed in a table with introductions, so you can even do a movie bingo. I'm very curious about how much time they spent on writing and editing. If you find it at a bookstore, please flip through it. The illustrations are also stylish, so it's highly recommended for you movie lovers.

By the way, if you have U-Next, you can read it from Book. I read paper books when I'm in bed. It's heavy and bulky to carry around, so I read it electronically on the train or bus. I love [C'mon C'mon], so I plan to decorate the magazine itself in my interior after I finish reading it.

Connections Expanded by This Note

The previous article [Princess Mononoke] received the most comments ever. Thank you for all the comments.

I lost the [Stranger Things] event that I really wanted to go to, and I was super depressed... Your comments were encouraging. This isn't flattery, I'm pretty serious... lol The morning I thought about taking a day off from work, the number of comments increased, and I was able to get through the day.

What I was thinking while writing about [Princess Mononoke] was that I grew up without being very familiar with wild animals. But I was thinking, "What do farmers who are threatened by wild animals in their daily lives think when they watch [Princess Mononoke]?" In fact, I received comments from people who were familiar with wild animals. Even in Kyoto, the bear sighting area is finally reaching my living area... I've been thinking about various things these past few days.

The other day, I was invited to a movie gathering by someone who contacted me on Instagram. I seriously simulated, "What if it's a strange religion or a multi-level marketing invitation..." But as a result, it was the best. When the conversation turned to movies they had just seen, and the topic came up, I had seen something but it wasn't very good... When I was asked, "How was it?" I had the courage to say, "It was okay." And they agreed, "I know, right?" And not just one person, but another person too...

I had never had a real-life relationship where I could just say my movie感想 (kansou - thoughts/impressions). I wouldn't have been able to summon the courage to participate if I hadn't had a good relationship with the people I met on this Note.

Thanks to all of you, my world is expanding. I look forward to your continued support.
