The Promise of Dappled Light
Chapter 4: Love Torn Apart, Tested Bonds (Autumn to Early Winter)
As autumn deepened, the forests of Ainu Mosir blazed in hues of fiery red and gold, until the first cold snows began to dust the branches. Yet, far swifter than the turning of the seasons, the air surrounding the kotan grew icy and tense.
1. The Looming Shadows of Discord
One afternoon, the village square was consumed by a tense, angry standoff. A trading vessel from Honshu had arrived, and the merchants were attempting to force an unfair trade upon the villagers.
"You Wajin merchants! For a single iron pot, how can you demand such a massive quantity of dried salmon and prime kelp?" a young Ainu warrior protested fiercely, standing before the trade goods.
"Silence! If you want iron pots and steel knives (makiri), this is the price you must pay. If you do not like it, we will take our pots elsewhere. It is not as if you people have the technology to smelt your own iron." The stout Wajin merchant sneered, offering a blatantly exploitative exchange rate. The era of equal and peaceful partnership that had once defined the trade between the two peoples was being rapidly eroded by the arrogance and greed of the mainland merchants.
Asirpa stood at the back of the crowd, her heart aching as she watched the hostile exchange. Beside her, Genjiro's expression was darker than anyone's.
(...Just as I feared. The greedy lords of Honshu are beginning to threaten this land and its gentle people. The tragedy I fled is unfolding before my very eyes.)
Gen pressed his hand against his chest. Beneath his vest lay the warmth of the attus Asirpa had woven for him, and the secret dagger that bore his family crest.
2. The Unveiling of the Secret
That night, the tension in the village exploded in the worst possible way. A group of young Ainu men, keeping watch over the Wajin trade ship, crossed paths with a samurai guard who recognized Gen's face. The guard had been part of a search party dispatched from Honshu to find the missing heir of the Minamoto clan.
"You... There is no mistake! You are Lord Genjiro, the heir of the noble Minamoto! What are you doing hiding among these barbarians!?"
The shouting echoed through the quiet night of the kotan. Before Asirpa, the village elders, and the angry young warriors, Gen's lie of being a "simple apprentice" was ruthlessly shattered.
"Minamoto...? The clan of fierce warriors from Honshu who command massive armies?" The young Ainu warriors glared at Gen with sudden, deep suspicion.
"Gen... Is it true? Are you a samurai? A man of the bloodline that rules those terrible wars?" Asirpa's eyes shook with shock and profound sorrow.
"Asirpa, I—!" Gen tried to speak, but the words died in his throat. Having hidden his identity for so long, there was no way to convince them that his presence was not a Wajin plot—a spy mission to scout Ainu Mosir for conquest.
"Seize him! He is a Wajin spy!" the young warriors shouted, drawing their bows and surrounding him. "Wait! Gen would never do that!" Asirpa cried, throwing herself in front of him to shield him. At that exact moment, a detachment of heavily armed Wajin soldiers from the Southern Garrison—sent to recover Genjiro and intimidate the villagers—burst into the village under the cover of darkness.
"Secure Lord Genjiro! Cut down any barbarian who stands in your way!"

Torches flared, and screams rent the night. To protect Asirpa and prevent the village from being slaughtered, Gen roared: "Stand down! I will return with you to the garrison! Touch no one in this village!"
"Gen!" Asirpa reached out, her fingers desperately trying to catch the sleeve of his attus. But the cold steel of the Wajin swords barred her path, and her hand clawed vainly at the empty, freezing air.
3. A Crimson Rift
Deep within the stone-walled fortress of the Southern Garrison. Genjiro sat on the cold floor, stripped of his attus and forced into the heavy, formal indigo robes of a samurai lord. Before him sat the ambitious Wajin commander, wearing a cold, arrogant smirk.
"Lord Genjiro. For a descendant of the noble Minamoto to live among those wild barbarians is a disgrace to your blood. But fortunately, our interests align. We have received word that the barbarians, angered by the trade terms, plan to attack this fortress."
The commander leaned forward, his eyes glinting with malice. "We want you to ride at the head of our vanguard. Use the terror of the Minamoto name to crush those insolent savages once and for all. If you refuse, you will be branded a traitor to Honshu, and your head will roll. Choose the pride of the Wajin, and ride with us."
Genjiro's fists clenched so tightly his fingernails bit into his palms, drawing blood. (Pride of the Wajin? To cheat these gentle people, to steal their peaceful lives—what pride is there in such cowardice!?)
Yet, he knew that if he openly rebelled now, the garrison would launch an immediate, merciless slaughter of Asirpa and her entire village.
Meanwhile, inside her quiet, cold chise, Asirpa sat alone, clutching the azure glass bead Gen had given her. "Gen is not a traitor. His eyes... those were not the eyes of a man who lies."
Outside, the young men of the village were coating their arrows with deadly aconite, preparing for a final, desperate war. "Asirpa, open your eyes. That Wajin was the son of the very warlords who wish to conquer us. The next time we meet him, it will be on the battlefield."
Outside the window, the snow fell silently, blanketing the earth in a cold shroud. Though their hearts remained bound by an unbreakable vow, the cruel tides of history and blood were dragging them apart, forcing them to face each other as enemies.
On the freezing horizon, the smoke of war was poised to rise.
