The Promise of Dappled Light

Chapter 3: The Azure Glass and the Summer Secret (Mid-Summer to Early Autumn)

The summer sun sparkled across the deep blue waters of Ainu Mosir, heralding the height of the season. The forest canopy was a rich, heavy green, and the wind carried the crisp tang of the sea mixed with the fresh breath of the woods.

Having fully integrated into the life of the kotan, Genjiro (Gen) now hunted and paddled the dugout canoes alongside the village men. While the sharp, keen edge of his samurai training remained, the defensive hostility and arrogance he had carried from Honshu had vanished, replaced by a quiet, steady peace.

One afternoon, Gen and Asirpa found themselves on a secluded, sandy beach nestled beneath a towering cliff—a secret spot rarely visited even by the villagers. The gentle, rhythmic lapping of the waves was the only sound that broke the silence.

"Gen. This is for you."

Sitting on the sand, Asirpa offered a neatly wrapped bundle to Gen, her cheeks flushing slightly with shyness. It was an attus—a traditional robe woven from the tough fibers of the elm tree. Looking closely, Gen saw that the collar, sleeves, and back were adorned with intricate embroidery. Swirls of red and black thread formed sharp, thorn-like patterns (ayus)—a sacred motif meant to ward off evil spirits and protect the wearer.

"You are always so clumsy and reckless. I stitched this, one needle at a time, so the Kamuy would keep you safe."

Taking the garment, Gen felt the rugged, sturdy texture of the fabric. The realization of the countless hours she had spent embroidering this for him filled his chest with a profound warmth.

"For me...? Asirpa, thank you. I will treasure it."

Without hesitation, Gen discarded his ragged Wajin tunic and slipped the attus over his shoulders. It was a perfect fit, accentuating his broad, powerful frame as if it had been tailored precisely for him.

"How does it look? Does it suit me?" Gen laughed softly, and Asirpa’s face flushed a deeper pink as she offered a bright, radiant smile. "Yes. It suits you wonderfully. No one could tell you are a Wajin now."

"Is that so? Then, I have something I wish to give to you as well."

Gen reached into the folds of his new attus and pulled out a small, drawstring pouch made of kudzu fabric. From it, he drew a single, breathtaking azure glass bead strung upon a simple cord.

It was an exquisite treasure that had made its way to Honshu through the northern port of Tosaminato, having traveled across the continental trade routes. Gen had kept it on his person as the sole remaining proof of his noble lineage. When held up to the light, it glowed with a deep, mesmerizing azure, as if a piece of the clear northern sea itself had been captured within the glass.

"This is..." Asirpa gasped.

"I thought it looked just like your eyes," Gen said, smiling gently as he slipped the cord over Asirpa's slender neck. "To me, your eyes are the very color of the sky and sea of Ainu Mosir. This glass is incredibly rare and precious in the world I left behind. But I want you to have it. Consider it a piece of my heart."

Asirpa cupped the azure bead in her hands. Her eyes, reflecting the sparkling sea, brimmed with tears. "...Gen. I will cherish it. I will never take it off, not until the day I die."

A gentle sea breeze swept between them. Wearing each other's gifts, the final barriers between their two hearts vanished entirely.

"I'm hungry. Gen, let us eat the 'sitogi' you brought."

Asirpa laughed, and Gen produced a few white, round dumplings from his pack. Made simply from rice flour and water, they were plain, unsalted dumplings often used in Wajin religious ceremonies.

"They are rather bland on their own..." Gen chuckled, but Asirpa puffed out her chest proudly. "Leave that to me! I brought some 'kokuwa' (hardy kiwi) jam I made from wild fruits in the forest. And I have some rich venison fat (secci) as well."

Asirpa opened a small wooden container, revealing a sweet, tangy jam made from crushed, ripe kokuwa berries, shining like liquid emeralds. She lightly toasted the dumplings over a small fire until they softened, placed a dollop of the rich venison fat on top, and finished them with a generous spoonful of the green jam.

"Now, try it. It is the bounty of our forest joined with your sitogi."

Gen took a bite of the prepared dumpling.

"――!"

As Gen's eyes widened in surprise, Asirpa leaned in closer, watching his reaction with delight.

The chewy, simple sweetness of the rice dumpling was instantly elevated by the bright, tangy burst of the wild kokuwa jam. The rich, savory venison fat enveloped the flavors, creating a smooth, luxurious finish that melted on his tongue. The pure white dumpling of Wajin craft and the wild, untamed fruits of Ainu Mosir had come together in perfect, delicious union.

"It is incredible... truly delicious, Asirpa. It melts in my mouth." "It is Hinna, isn't it? They are good on their own, but when we bring them together, they become something far greater. ...Just like us."

Asirpa's quiet murmur made Gen's heart thud against his ribs.

She clutched the azure bead at her chest, her gaze fixed on him in his attus. "You, a Wajin, and me, an Ainu. If we bring the best of our worlds together, we can create something so warm and beautiful. There is no need for anyone to fight."

Her voice held a trace of melancholy, as if she could already hear the faint, ominous footsteps of an approaching conflict.

Gen set the remaining food aside and gently drew her into his arms. Asirpa did not pull away. She rested her head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart through the coarse fibers of the attus.

"Asirpa," Gen whispered, resting his cheek against her soft hair. "I am never going back to Honshu's wars or the shackles of my birth. The thing I want to protect is not my family name, nor is it my samurai pride. It is you. You, and this beautiful land that you love."

"Gen..."

Asirpa looked up, her deep blue eyes locking onto his sincere gaze. Without another word, they leaned in and met in a tender, lingering kiss.

The sound of the waves washing over the shore was the only witness. In the sweet, slightly cool breeze of late summer, they held each other tightly, engraving their love into the very depths of their souls.

Even knowing that a dark storm was gathering on the horizon, Gen swore to his own soul that he would throw away his very life to protect this girl and her world.
