Whispers on the Ryukyuan Wind

Episode 4: The Ultimate Trial, Tidings of the Tempest ⚓

The Merchant of the Kanzashi and the Heavens Baring Their Teeth

Three years had swept across the East China Sea, like waves chasing the shadow of the tribute ship that had long since vanished beyond the horizon.

Now twenty-three, Manazuru had grown into a formidable and respected merchant. In the bustling markets of Naha, there was no one who did not know of her as "Manazuru of the Hairpin." Adorning her rich, dark hair was the translucent blue glass hairpin—the kanzashi—that had reached her like a miracle a year ago. Under the blazing Southern sun, it caught the light, scattering brilliant sapphire sparks that served as her silent armor.

"Manazuru, thanks to your keen eye, we obtained the finest silk threads this year. Nifee deebiru—thank you," an elderly weaver said warmly, bowing her head.

"Think nothing of it, Obaa," Manazuru replied with a confident smile. "This is only the beginning. Soon, I will source spices and vibrant dyes from the kingdoms further south. The sea of Naha connects us to the entire world, after all."

The petty harassments from the older, rival merchants who had once tried to isolate her were now nothing more than a passing breeze. With a crisp click, Manazuru tapped the wooden scales hanging from her waist. As she gave brisk instructions to her assistants, her posture exuded the absolute pride and unshakable confidence of someone who had carved her own path in the fierce world of commerce.

But on that particular morning, as a gentle receding wave washed over the sandy shore of Naha harbor, a sudden shout shattered the peaceful air.

"The tribute ship! The tribute ship is returning!"

The lookout’s cry echoed through the market, and in that instant, Manazuru’s heart leaped violently.

Three years. It had been so long. Even though she held onto her unyielding belief that he was alive, she had spent every morning meticulously arranging the ash of the kitchen hearth and folding her hands to pray to Hinukan, the Hearth God, for his safety.

Tarugane is coming home.

Manazuru nearly dropped her ledger. Clutching her skirts, she began to run toward the port. The harbor was already surging with a tidal wave of people—mothers, fathers, and lovers desperate to catch a glimpse of the returning fleet. The atmosphere felt almost festive. There, hovering faintly on the edge of the horizon, was the massive, dark silhouette of the crown's tribute ship (Shinkosen).

Yet, as if to mock the joyous shouts of Naha, the heavens abruptly bared their teeth.

Within a single hour, unnatural, purple-black clouds crawled across the sky, swallowing the sun. A warm, sticky gale violently shook the market stalls, kicking up blinding flurries of dust. The clean scent of the ocean curdled into something heavy and ominous, clinging to the skin like wet wool.

"It's an Ufukaji! The most monstrous tempest in years is upon us!"

A scream tore through the crowd, and in an instant, the peaceful harbor erupted into sheer panic.

The Struggle in the Tempest, Defying the Waves

At that very moment, just leagues away from the harbor, Tarugane’s tribute ship was trapped in the ferocious maw of the open sea.

"Cut the mast! Lower the sails! She's going to capsize!"

Deafening roars of command were swallowed by the violent, low thrum of the waves. The world had turned upside down. Mountainous walls of black water crashed onto the deck with brutal force, blinding the crew with frozen spray. Whipping ropes snapped through the air like lashes of iron, drawing blood f

rom the skin of the struggling sailors.

"Lighten the hull! Throw the cargo overboard!" the captain bellowed, his voice raw and desperate.

Sailors wept as they dragged heavy crates of exquisite Chinese porcelain and rare spices—treasures they had risked their lives to trade for in the Ming capital—and cast them into the howling, pitch-black abyss. Once swallowed by the sea, they would never be recovered. But if the ship sank, they would all perish.

"Tarugane! What are you doing? Throw that crate over!" a senior sailor screamed, grabbing Tarugane's shoulder.

But Tarugane, now twenty-six and seasoned by the sea, was practically fused to a single, heavy wooden crate. He had wrapped thick hemp ropes around his torso, using his own muscular body as a shield to anchor the cargo to the deck.

Inside that crate lay the highest-grade silk textiles—the very treasure Manazuru had dreamed of procuring.

"No!" Tarugane roared against the wind. "Not this one! I will never let it go!"

His raw, salt-chafed fingers bled as they clawed into the wooden edges, refusing to yield. Around his right ankle, the te-mamori—the Pandanus leaf anklet Manazuru had hand-woven and tied for him three years ago—remained firmly bound, though its green had faded to a weathered gray.

Manazuru, I will not die here!

Tarugane clamped his teeth hard onto the knot of the amulet, glaring into the screaming darkness of the storm.

"If I don't bring this back, my return means nothing! I promised her! I am delivering this to Manazuru! So do not sink, you damn ship!"

A blinding flash of lightning ripped the dark sky open, and with a sickening crack, the main mast snapped in two. The ship was plunged directly into the swirling vortex of the monstrous sea.

The Shattered Port of Naha, Eyes Unyielding to Despair

The next morning, the tempest had passed, leaving behind a cruelly quiet, golden dawn over Naha.

But the harbor itself lay in catastrophic ruins.

Coop houses were half-destroyed, and the receding tide had littered the beach with shattered wood, torn sails, and... the unmistakable, splintered hull fragments of the tribute ship.

"Oh, gods... have mercy..." "The tribute ship was wrecked... All is lost. No one could have survived that."

People fell to their knees on the wet sand, weeping and wailing for their lost kin.

Step by step, the wealthy rival merchant, Kanagusuku, walked through the damp mud. A cold sneer played on his lips as he approached the shore.

"As I thought, those fools have found their graves at the bottom of the sea. What a tragic waste of capital," he remarked, his voice dripping with malice. "Well, 'Manazuru of the Hairpin,' it seems your boastful trade route has reached its dead end."

Hearing his words, the surrounding townspeople lowered their heads in despair. To them, the wreckage on the shore was absolute proof of the fleet's demise.

Yet, amidst the weeping crowd, Manazuru did not shed a single tear.

Squeezing the hem of her dark blue hemp robe, she took one step, then another, walking steadily through the scattered debris on the beach. Her hand rose slowly, her fingertips brushing against the cool glass of the blue hairpin in her hair. Under the morning sun, it remained unchanged, burning with a quiet, defiant sapphire flame.

"Who says it is a dead end?"

Her voice was quiet, yet it cut through the air with such icy sharpness that the weeping around her ceased. She turned slowly, her wide, burning eyes locking onto the sneering face of the wealthy merchant.

"That fool Tarugane would never die in a place like this. He would never lose the te-mamori I wove for him."

Her shoulders trembled slightly. But it was not from fear, nor was it from despair. It was the fierce tremor of unyielding defiance and absolute faith.

"He will return. Even if he has to swim, even if he has to crawl back through the mud, he will return. We made a promise to become the greatest merchants in Naha on this very shore! I will never believe he is dead!"

Turning her back on the whispering crowd, Manazuru faced the horizon once more, her fierce gaze boring into the wild, endless expanse of the East China Sea.
