A Silent Step

【Episode 4: The Cold Iron Stove, the Coal to Burn the Curse】

Tatsumi stared at the worn canvas resting in the corner of his room.

The incredibly heavy kissling backpack. It was a monument of regret for Grandmother Chiyo, whose dreams were shattered by a single moment of complacency—yudan. It was also the "vessel of a curse" for Mother Aya, who, out of her deep love for her mother, could never discard it, yet had suffered under its suffocating control.

"From now on, I will carry this."

Whispering quietly, Tatsumi crawled out of his bed and slipped his arms through the heavy straps of the backpack.

The canvas bit deeply into his shoulders, and a heavy gravity dominated his entire body. It was painful. Yet, that very pain was the mud-stained, genuine weight of real life he had long yearned for—something that never existed within the "comfortable space" of his video game.

With a quiet click of the door, Tatsumi stepped across the threshold of his dark room.

In the corner of the living room sat a cold iron stove, unused for years. Beside it, his mother Aya sat huddled, hugging her knees.

Behind her, Tatsumi let the heavy sound of his footsteps, weighted by the backpack, echo through the room.

Aya turned slowly and gasped. The moment her eyes caught "it" on Tatsumi’s shoulders, an indescribable shudder of dread and sorrow swept across her face.

"Tatsumi... why are you carrying that...? Take it off, quickly. It is too heavy for you. You will only get hurt again."

"I'm not taking it off, Mother."

Tatsumi walked over to his mother and knelt quietly beside her. The weight of the backpack pressed heavily through the floorboards into the soles of his feet.

"You loved Grandmother very much, didn't you, Mother? Because you loved her so deeply, you couldn't throw this backpack away. You couldn't bear to treat the proof of her life like trash."

Aya's shoulders trembled violently.

"I loved you so much, Mother. That was why every time I challenged something, only to have you deny me and tell me to give up, it just made me so sad. But you didn't hate me. You were just terrified, driven nearly mad by the flashback of Grandmother's accident, all because you loved me."

"Tatsumi..."

"Mother, thank you for naming me Tatsumi—to stand on one's own. It carries the exact same wish as the true vow Grandmother made in the scorched fields at ten years old: 'Stand up, and take a step forward.'"

The tears Aya had held back finally spilled over, and she covered her face.

"Yes... I didn't want you to kill your heart and live a life of stifling safety like I did. But I was so terrified of seeing you get hurt. Every time you failed, my mother’s fear—the terror that 'challenging will lead to irreversible injury'—would flash back in my head like madness! And so... screaming 'See? It turned out exactly as I said!'... I was casting the exact same curse on you that my mother cast on me..."

"It's okay now, Mother."

Tatsumi gently wrapped his mother's trembling hands in his own, offering a warm, physical touch—tezawari.

"This backpack is not the weight of two generations of defeat. It is the physical mass of the love we have shared so deeply. That is why I won't run, and I won't cast it aside. I will carry this on my own legs, up to that eighth station where Grandmother surrendered. I will turn our curse into a blessing."

Aya looked up into Tatsumi’s face. There was no longer any trace of the fragile boy who had once shut himself away, escaping into the glow of video games.

There was only the gaze of a strong man, determined to stand firm upon reality with his own feet.

"Tatsumi... you are truly going, aren't you?"

"Yes. I will carry all the tears you were never allowed to shed, too."

Tatsumi’s powerful words gently melted the freezing air of the living room.

Beside them, deep within the iron stove that had been frozen for years, a quiet, hot coal—sumi—was ignited more brilliantly than ever before. It was the birth of an unyielding source of warmth to burn away the curse and heat their future.
