Episode 3: Respite in Piccadilly

By February 1930, a miraculous lull finally broke the endless cycle of tense negotiations.

It was a Sunday afternoon, and the heavy blanket of clouds that usually suffocated London had briefly parted, allowing a gentle winter sun to illuminate the cobblestone streets.

Kazuya had shed his uniform, changing into a well-tailored civilian overcoat to walk the streets stretching from Piccadilly toward Bond Street. It was a rare stroll, meant to offer even a shred of peace to a mind battered by constant debates and the barrage of telegrams from Tokyo. The streets, lined with high-end boutiques and grand theaters, were alive with citizens enjoying their day off.

"Oh—Lieutenant Commander Hiiragi?"

A clear, familiar voice cut through the bustling crowd, bringing Kazuya to a sudden halt.

Turning around, he found Shizuko standing there, holding a small paper bag. She was dressed far differently from her neat embassy attire, wearing a soft wool hat and a flowing civilian cape.

"Miss Yukimura... My, what a surprise. What a coincidence."

"Yes! I never imagined I would run into you in a place like this."

The smile Shizuko offered him held none of the grim gravity that had weighed on her in the midnight office. Bathed in the golden sunlight, her youthful, radiant expression stole Kazuya's breath away, sending a sudden flutter through Kazuya's chest.

"...Seeing you outside the embassy, you look like a completely different person. You look... truly beautiful."

"As do you," Shizuko whispered, a sudden blush staining her cheeks as she lowered her eyes shyly. "Without your uniform, you look like a normal... no, a very gentle young man. There are no seventy-percent ratios here, nor any telegrams."

The two naturally fell into step beside one another. Drawn by the rich, sweet aroma of roasted chestnuts—a staple of London's winter streets—they bought a bag and shared the warm treats as they walked. Every time their fingertips brushed inside the bag, Kazuya felt a jolt of sweet tension.

As they paused outside a dignified antique shop along the street, a vintage silver pen caught Kazuya's eye through the glass showcase. It was an Onoto, a masterpiece of British craftsmanship, boasting a luxurious silver overlay with intricate engravings. Kazuya found himself mesmerized by the brilliant pen, a brand that Japan's greatest literary minds had long romanticized.

"Watching the smiles of the people on these streets," Kazuya said softly, his eyes still fixed on the silver pen. "I feel as though I finally understand exactly what it is I am supposed to protect. It isn't the arbitrary numbers argued over in conference rooms, nor is it the pride of the military. It is this—this ordinary, everyday life. I am here to fight so that my family in Japan, and people like you, can live out your days in peace."

It was the ultimate answer Kazuya had finally found, dug out from beneath the crushing weight of his duties.

Shizuko gazed intently at Kazuya’s profile, her eyes reflecting deep trust and an irrepressible tenderness. She took a small, deliberate step closer to him.

"Kazuya..."

It was the first time she had ever called him by his name, dropping his rank entirely. As Kazuya turned to her in surprise, she looked straight into his eyes.

"I want to protect that everyday life with you. Even when you must face the raging storms back in Tokyo, I will be right there beside you."

The final barrier around Kazuya's heart crumbled away. The space between them had shifted permanently from comrades sharing a burden to a man and a woman who had become indispensable to one another.

With a fierce new resolve burning in Kazuya's chest, Kazuya bought the silver Onoto pen—a sacred vow to write his way through this conference, and this love, to the very end.
