The Zoo That Seeks Solutions Rather Than Excuses

前日台湾入りして、二日間にわたり台北動物園を満喫した。霊長類を中心に見て回る。
I arrived in Taiwan the day before and spent two full days enjoying the Taipei Zoo. My primary focus was on primates.

台北動物園の動物福祉の有言実行と保全活動に感銘した。そしてその動物園での体験は来園者の大きな学びとなり、教育的役割をしっかり担っている。実際の飼育動物を置き去りにしたまま、教育を全面に出して、箱の中で保全や動物福祉を訴えている園とは違う。言葉が一人歩きしていない。各展示場に最新の種の解説とIUCN レッドリストを掲示。ケージ状の展示形態はほぼなかった。見ていて不快な気持ちになる展示がない。より野生の生息地に近い環境を作り出している。動物を探し出すワクワクがなんとも言えない。さて、本題。
I was deeply impressed by the zoo's commitment to animal welfare and its active conservation efforts. The experience at the zoo serves as a significant learning opportunity for visitors, fulfilling its educational role effectively. It is unlike those institutions that prioritize education on paper—advocating for conservation and welfare within a "box"—while neglecting the actual animals in their care. Here, the words are backed by action. Each exhibit features up-to-date species descriptions and IUCN Red List statuses. There were almost no cage-like enclosures, and I didn't encounter any displays that felt uncomfortable to watch. Instead, they have created environments that closely resemble wild habitats. The excitement of searching for the animals is truly special. Now, on to the main report.

1日目 / Day 1

開園時間前に台北動物園へ到着。あいにくの雨😭上野動物園ほどではないが、さすが人気の動物園。週末ということもあり、悪天にも関わらず、すでに大勢の客が門の前にいた。
I arrived at Taipei Zoo before opening time. Unfortunately, it was raining. While not quite as crowded as Ueno Zoo, it is clearly a popular destination; despite the bad weather, a large crowd had already gathered at the gate since it was the weekend.

入場料TWD100(約470円)。展示の質がいいのにこの安さ。ありがたや〜。ニシゴリラの展示場は丘の上にあるので、シャトルバス(Shuttle Train)TWD5(約20円)で木々が生い茂る広大な敷地を移動。学生のボランティアの集団が一緒に乗っていてお祭り騒ぎしていたところ、私くらいの年齢のベテラン女性スタッフが「はしゃぐんじゃない！」とぴしゃっと諌めていた😅この年代の女性たちはどこの国でも頼もしいのである🤭
The admission fee is TWD 100 (approx. US$ 3). Such high-quality exhibits for such a low price—I'm truly grateful. Since the Western Lowland Gorilla exhibit is on a hill, I took the Shuttle Train (TWD 5, approx. US$ 0.15) to travel through the vast, lush grounds. A group of student volunteers on the train was making quite a fuss, but a veteran female staff member around my age sternly scolded them, saying, "Stop fooling around!" 😅 Women of this generation are dependable no matter the country.

ゴリラの展示場前は一番乗りだった。しばらく待ってみるも、なかなか群れが出てこないので、向かいのチンパンジーの群れを見始める。かわいいコドモがいた。チンパンジーは三つのグループに分かれているようだ。展示されていたのは、コドモがいる大きな群れと比較的年齢層の高い落ち着いたグループ。それから裏側にバチェラー群がいるようだった。
I was the first one at the gorilla exhibit. After waiting for a while without the troop appearing, I started watching the chimpanzee troop across the way. There was a cute youngster. The chimpanzees seemed to be divided into three groups: a large troop with youngsters, a relatively older and calmer group, and what appeared to be a bachelor group in the back.

30分ほどしてゴリラたちが放飼場に登場する。来園者もちらほらと増え始める。
About 30 minutes later, the gorillas made their appearance in the outdoor enclosure. Visitors also started to trickle in.

ゴリラの展示場の近くにワオキツネザルとクロシロエリマキキツネザルが混合展示されていた。台北動物園のクロシロエリマキキツネザルたちは姫路市立動物園から来た個体たちの子孫のよう。
Near the gorilla exhibit, Ring-tailed Lemurs and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs were housed together. It seems the Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs at Taipei Zoo are descendants of individuals that came from Himeji City Zoo.

ボルネオオランウータンの展示場は台風の影響で一部閉鎖されていた。台北動物園は展示しているオランウータンと非展示のオランウータンがいるようだ。展示されていたオランウータンたちの名前の標識を見つけることができなかった。後日時間をかけてネットで調べてみる。展示されていた3頭は、なんと祖母・母・娘の三世代でおばあちゃんのXiao Gui Tou (小鬼頭/シャオグイトウ)、娘のNiang Re(娘惹/ニャンルー)、孫のRe Huo(惹或/リューフア)。生年月日などは公表されていない。
The Borneo Orangutan exhibit was partially closed due to the effects of a typhoon. It appears Taipei Zoo has some orangutans on display and others behind the scenes. I couldn't find the nameplates for the orangutans on display that day, so I looked them up online later. To my surprise, the three on display were three generations: grandmother Xiao Gui Tou, daughter Niang Re, and granddaughter Re Huo. Their birth dates have not been made public.

フクロテナガザルは、展示場に出すペアをシフトで変えているようだ。この日いたペアがどの個体なのか詳細はわからなかった。ただ、札幌市円山動物園から1988年に来園したメスのフクロテナガザルがたくさんの子孫に恵まれて、そのうちの何頭かが現在もいるということは調べてわかった。
For the Siamangs, it seems they rotate the pairs on display. I couldn't find specific details on which pair was out that day. However, I did learn that a female Siamang who arrived from Sapporo Maruyama Zoo in 1988 had many descendants, some of whom are still at the zoo today.

パンゴリンドームというバードホールのような建物には、長蛇の列をなしていたので入らなかった。しかしあとからここにワタボウシタマリンなどの小型サルが放し飼いにされていると知り、また翌日は休館だったので、この日入らなかったことをしごく後悔した。
The "Pangolin Dome," a bird-hall-like structure, had a long queue, so I didn't go inside. I later regretted this deeply when I learned that small monkeys like Cotton-top Tamarins are free-roaming inside, and the building was closed the following day.
