From Wanderings in South America, the United States, and the Antilles, by Charles Waterton:

p. 29 "Here, a little after midnight on the first of May, was heard a most strange and unaccountable noise. It seemed as though several regiments were engaged, and musketry firing with great rapidity...There were no soldiers within three or four hundred miles. Conjecture was of no avail, and all conversation next morning on the subject was as useless and unsatisfactory as the dead silence which succeeded the noise."

p. 46 "...the commander asked, with much more interest than a question in ordinary conversation is asked, where I was on the night of the first of May. On telling him that I was at an Indian settlement a little below the great fall in the Demerara, and that a strange and sudden noise had alarmed all the Indians, he said the same astonishing noise had aroused every man in Fort St. Joachim, and that they remained under arms till morning. He observed that he had been quite at a loss to form any idea what could have caused the noise; but now learning that the same noise had been heard at the same time far away from the Rio Branco, it struck him that there must have been an earthquake somewhere or other."

Just finished the book about Spain which describes, among other things, Opus Dei, which I expect to be reading more about in the future...it says that although Opus Dei is supposed to be a secret society you can recognize members if you know what to look for. One way you can tell is that they wear a particular cologne...I wonder if we can use that idea somewhere.

Do y'all want to try for Saturday morning/afternoon again? Like maybe 9:00 am/noon/5:00 pmish or something? I've been waiting around because I know someone who was making hints about wanting us to help her move sometime this weekend, but it's almost Friday evening and if she hasn't said anything about it by now she can damn well wait.

Under what circumstances are the boys going to end up having a conversation with EJ? This is something for all three of us to work out, so I'm leaving this post open for Lucy to write in as well.

This is not particularly related to anything, but I just realized that historical Lawrence reminds me a lot of Alice Sheldon, or vice versa. It mostly has to do with the assumption of personas and names (I was just reading his advice on getting along with Arabs) plus the travel and depression and military service and general misunderstoodness.

'In Sinshan and Madidinou, people raised himpi, the little guinea-piglike animal with piebald fur, for meat; elsewhere himpi were kept only as pets, which put Sinshan and Madidinou at some moral disadvantage.'

What did historical Blake's wife say to their guest when he complained that there was no soap in the house?

Charlotte Perkins Gilman is starting to remind Blake of Emily. Also he's terribly overwhelmed at having actually MET her--or he would be if he let himself think about it.

Also, this trip, miserable as it is for her, is not entirely a bad thing because she comes out of it knowing that women will get the vote and more freedom...although no communal nurseries, alas.

Yeah, okay, so I should go to bed. Good morning...

Why yes, I am an engineer, how can you tell?

( Quantitative analysis of the topic of an earlier discussion.Collapse )

This is based on what I recall of everyone's journals and RPs; I don't have time to go back and read each one....
