Awkward Introductory Post

Hi ! No one has posted in this community in a while, so I thought I might.

My name is Liz. I'm an "Administrative Assistant" (secretary) at one of the largest GMAC owned Real Estate offices in Michigan. I'm also one of three personal assistants to our top agent in the company, (hence the user name- "Holly's gopher"). I also have a paralyzing fear of talking to people. Making my job choice that much more amusing.

The market in Michigan is awful, everyone who’s selling loses like $20,000, and everyone who is buying acts like they're the Pope. It's fun. And by fun I mean I keep a flask in my bra.

My one upside is hearing really amusing stories of really, really insane people. Well, two, people bring me pie a lot....

Also I know some of the Pistons live. Holly left today to go drop off some flyers to the subdivision Chauncey Billups lives in.

Me: “Really?”

Holly: “Yeah. I think he would want to live in a gated community anyway.”

Me: “So people can’t randomly put stuff in his mailbox?”

Holly: “…yeah.”

So yeah, Hi.

introductions, yay.

So, my name is Kan. I work in the receiving/stockroom office at my campus. Basically I take the purchase requests with their corresponding invoices--pink slips--make up stock #'s for the items--b/c shop workers are too lazy to put down the code for what they're ordering, and put that crap into the inventory system, then check it out for the jobs... yeah... I sit here alot. I found this community by searching LJ communities for boredom. lol They all look pretty dead.. so I guess everyone but me has found something to do.

Data Entry

Okay, so I work in an office (obviously) as a sub-assistant and data entry is a big part of my job. I don't mind it-- I listen to music and mostly it's pretty chill--the least stressful part of my day.

So, anyway, I've been seeing all of these online ads for "doing data entry at home!! Earn extra cash!!" I figured that could be a good way to make up for my lack-luster paychecks at something I'm already familiar with. Obviously, I don't trust them when I have to pay X number of dollars for "training materials" but does anyone know of *actual, legitimate* companies that do work-from-home data entry? I could use a few extra dollars.

Girlie Action?!? LOL...

Today I was supposed to call a company that manufactures shoulder pads to see whether we could buy some for the department. Well, they must have changed their number. The message said,

Thank you for calling Girlie Action! If you know the name of the girl you'd like to speak to...

office christmas party

Is it wrong that I am completely offended that I didn't get invited to the Christmas bash happening tonight because I'm a temp?!

I've been working here for over 2 months now!

Curious.

Quick little question but it would mean a great deal to me to get some good answers.

I aspire to be an administrative professional. What kind of post-highschool education did you go through to get the skills necessary for this job? I know there are different kinds of administrative professionals, so for argument's sake please tell me where you work today (medical building, regular office building, etc).

Seriously, it means a lot :)

xposted around a bit for as many answers as possible.

I've just started work in an office [just finished week 2] and I feel like my soul's been sucked out of me. The people are nice but the work is just so boring I could die. Today I organized a few files then I had nothing to do for the rest of the day, it may sound like fun to some of you "easy money" I hear some of you say but dude I need something to do to make the day go faster. Argh, how comes 9-5 takes so long?

Power outage story

Last year for Secretaries' Day, my bosses (the professors) got me a cute little card that had a little cartoon secretary bustling around doing stuff. It included captions like "Collate! Stuff! Type! File! Dash!" and ended with "Leap tall buildings in a single bound!"

They apparently forgot one: "Control the city power grid!"

Today there was a big storm and my bldg. lost power for about 30 minutes. About halfway through this lovely little blackout, I was trying to sort mail in the semidark, when a group of students trooped up into my office and asked me when the power was going to come back on.

"Umm, I have no idea," I said.

"But we need to use the coooooopier!"

"I think the commons still has power; you can use the one there."

"But yours is free, and we're in a huuuuuuuurrrrrryyyyyy!"

*headdesk*

I had to explain to them again that I had absolutely no power and no idea when it was coming back on. Maybe they shouldn't have put off their project until the last minute? Or maybe they shouldn't be so dependent upon the departmental copier anyway, as I only let them use it out of the kindness of my heart and could easily charge them or just not let them use it at all.

But apparently, I have the mad skillz to magically make the power come back on, or at least predict when it will.

hello, my name is john hilbert. I am 23 and I am a history major and the university of cincinnati. I work at the kroger headquarters in downtown cincinnati, ohio.
I do borderline data entry work. I read comment cards and send them to where they need to go. its not so bad. I joined to avoid work and read about other people avoiding work.

Dear Students,

It would be easier to find the paperwork you're looking for if you articulated what kind of paperwork you are seeking.

Example:

"I need some form thingy for advising. They (always the mysterious they) told me I needed it and that you had it."

Turns out this means, "I need a copy of my placement test results."

However, as there are a whole bunch of other forms you might wish to bring to advising, I am unable to read your mind and discern that you need the placement results as opposed to, say, the degree plan sheet.

solicitation?

ok, so i've been working this temp job for several weeks, right? it's a pretty easy job, described to me over the phone as "reception and light computer work" before i started. when i got here, i found out they were having me do mailings, too--you know, stuffing envelopes, sticking address labels on posters; stuff like that. this was a little annoying, but i didn't really mind. the phones hardly ever ring anyway so it was a way to keep my hands busy.

last week, though, one of the full-timers came to me with another 'project' that involved what she called 'updating contact info.' basically they want to put out a mailing to a bunch of companies to try to sell them this company's product, but they need names for the people they're mailing, so she gave me a huge list of phone numbers to call to find out these names. maybe i'm just inflexible, but it feels a whole lot like solicitation to me. i'm not really a shy person, but i dislike being hung up on and spoken to rudely as much as the next person, and when i'm calling people to effectively try to sell them something, these things happen. i've gotten a few nice people, but not many.

i wouldn't mind if this had been in the job description, but if it had, i wouldn't have taken this job. would this bother anyone else? or am i just being too rigid?

son of phone rant

to caller: when you're making a business call, you could at least have the decency to turn down the music in your car so that i can hear what you're saying.

i'm just full of phone rants right now, heh. this job is so boring! i can't even read livejournal or reply to comments because the web filter blocks the site. at least i can still post by email--otherwise, all would be lost.

...jerks.

all right, mr. oh-so-important. i'm sure you have a terribly busy corporate lifestyle, filled with the glory of golf and meetings and that secretary who always wears the low-cut top on fridays, but would it KILL you to wait until i'm finished saying the company name before you demand to talk to so-and-so?

grrrrrrrrr.

i don't mind answering phones. it's the callers i have a problem with.

Gar!

2 things to bitch on today:

1. The New One

She has apparently never worked in an office with call transfer. I kid you not when I let her know there was a phone call to be transferred to her, she picked up the receiver before I had transfered the call and started talking, which disconnected the caller. She then did it twice more before just asking if she could use my desk to take calls. I told her to wait until she heard the phone sitting beside her ring before she picked anything up.

My psychic (or psychotic, whatever) powers are telling me she won't be lasting very long.

2. Annoying Spouses

I hate when the realtors' spouses call or come up to see them and they are otherwise occupied (usually with clients) and are thus unavailable. With one person in particular, it's as if I just told him I had kidnapped her and was holding her for ransom. He's also really bad to drive up to bring her something and sit in the parking lot and honk his horn until I go out to see what the rukus is about and he'll have me deliver it. I really do NOT like this guy.

I really hope he comes by. I'm going to love hearing his wife (one of those no-nonsense types) give it to him for interrupting her meeting.

Hi I'd like to introduce myself...

My name is Nicola I'm based in Newcastle, Australia. I'm a database admin in a multi-billion dollar company. So it's a bit ironic that I have nothing to do. Let me tell you, trying to look like you're working hard is lots harder than actually working hard. I've had some awful jobs before - I worked in the faults report call centre of a major telco, and can't say how much abuse I took - but this is much more tedious. Thank god for internet access!

Welcome to the nursery

The other secretary in my office has been gone since April 18 on maternity leave. She is back today for the first time. Oh, yeah, and she has brought the baby with her and will be bringing him, well, daily, until, well, probably when he goes to school.

Let's not even get me started. LOL

Pissy Rant

I am not your 3 year old, don't talk down to me like I might be. I am not your mother, don't expect me to take care of you just because you dont' feel like doing it yourself. I am not your best friend, don't tell me every single detail about your entire home life. I am not your English teacher, stop asking me how to spell things you should have learned in elementary school. I don't care that your cat threw up, I don't care that you got bit by a bug, and I don't care how many times you've talked to your kid today. And don't ask me if there is something for you on the fax machine. Get your lazy ass up and check it yourself. I don't have x-ray vision, I can't tell from here any better than you can.

And DON'T hand me work that YOU are supposed to do, and expect me to do it willingly because you stayed at work late yesterday. You got paid overtime for that, nobody owes you anything. I have my own work to take care of. You volunteered to stay late so you'd get more money. Isn't that enough?!?!?

I, like all of you, work in an office. I am a medical biller. My office isn't that bad. It's a small staff and they are all like my family...but there are times that it's so boring i could claw my eyes out. Luckily, I don't have a cubicle...but i'm in an office by myself to prevent me socializing, because I really like to talk. hahaha. I still find my ways though.

Sometimes it's fun. A lot of times it's not. But i'd rather work in an office than work fast food or retail...like the majority of the people my age. (i'm 19..)

Anyway..my name is Jennifer and hello all! :)

Xposted 2 Questions!!

It's about 95 degrees here with the high humidity and I have a job interview tomorrow. Is it appropriate to NOT wear a blazer/jacket anymore? Are black slacks, heels and a light colored top ok? I haven't had an interview in a long time...it's for a position with a different insurance company, if that helps.

Secondly, I don't really have any work samples to bring, as I am an insurance "Specialist". Is there something I can type up to put with my resume that would further detail my "accomplishments"??

X-posted Interview Question

When a potential employer asks (as I know they will) why I am leaving my current job, here's the truth:

"I'm leaving my current job because my boss is gone 99% of the time and I am left to run the entire office (an insurance agency) by myself. I get no benefits and am not paid enough to live on. I do absolutley everything, she does nothing, yet she makes 200-300k a year and I make barely 10k."

Now, how would you word that exactly?? I want them to know that I am not leaving because of the nature of the work, but because I am being severley taken advantage of!

Help!

Arg...

I'm often amazed at the people I deal with in my job. The majority are great if a little clueless about the inner workings of the realty world which I consider forgiveable. Then there are the minority whose necks I'd love to wring but at least they keep me from falling asleep.

Person 1: This guy called and left a message to speak with our broker (who is in Colorado at the moment) so I put him through to our on duty agent. He called back just after shift change to speak with our new on duty agent. And just a few minutes ago had his realtor from another company call us to set up an appointment, not mentioning once to either of our agents that he was already signed with someone else. I feel really bad for our agents when they get people like this because they'll start looking for things for these people only to discover that all of their work was for nothing and on weekends it is especially annoying due to that being when our part-timers will usually work and they don't see nearly enough sales.

Person 2: This lady and her mother and daughter drove up and came in to find out if we had a notary. I told her I was not sure. She then told me that our office did have a notary because she had had stuff notarized here before (my thought = so why did you ask if our office had a notary?). Then she wanted to know if someone here would know. I told her I would find out and went to track down CW to ask her. CW told me that our broker was the only notary in the office and was on vacation. I went back up and told the group that our broker was the notary for the office but that she was on vacation. She then asked me if I could call her and ask her to come in. I told her that the person in question was in Colorado for vacation and wouldn't be back until Wednesday. She then wanted to know if I couldn't just overlook and notarize her documents (the stuff is kept in the safe in the front storage area which I have access to). I told her I was not able to, that I did not have the ability to do that and I'm sorry. She got mad and left with her group.

Person 3: A realtor from another company called and started demanding answers to why her appointment hadn't been set up to show a listing. I told her I had no idea. I asked if she had contacted our appointment center and I was promptly told "I do NOT use that THING!" (My thought = Oh no, not her again! And she continued to harp on about how she hated dealing with my company, blah, blah, blah. THEN, she told me to set up the appointment for her which I am not able to do due to not having access to some of the codes for the service and I had to tell her that and say the only thing I know to do is for her to call and set up the appointment. Well she started repeating herself about how she "DID NOT USE THAT SERVICE!!!" and she "WOULD NOT USE THAT SERVICE!!!!" and hung up on me. This isn't the first time I've had to deal with this person. I don't know why she bothers to call on weekends, she knows the receptionists are not able to set up appointments, except for our office administrator. Once she came by the office to set the appointments up (assuming, I suppose, we kept an appointment book or something) and nearly had a stroke when I told her I couldn't do it. Her face turned red and I'm sure her blood pressure was up and she stormed out to call our broker to complain. I enjoy telling her to have a nice day.

Hopefully these will be all the nuts I'll see today.

I don't know whether to be grateful or bothered

My cousin is getting married this month and I had to get my bride's maid dress altered this morning. While I was out of the office I took the opportunity to do like fifty errands that I was supposed to have done since like September. I went to the bank, had an eye exam, ordered a cake for some function, had my eyebrows done, etc.

I get in the office at one and have ten messages from my boss (who is driving to St. Pete today, starting the vacay early) asking me when I was going to get in, etc. And then I'm cranking on all the work that has to get done before Tuesday (not nearly a day's worth). If I had been here all day I would be even more bored than I am, as it is 4 pm and I've completed all the day's tasks in under three hours.

At four o'clock everyone starts to leave. They are all starting their weekends early. Well, it is great to be here by myself so I don't have to conceal the fact that I'm doing NOTHING, but damnit, why the hell should I be at work? Why did I make the hour commute if I could just leave at four anyway?

Bastards.

Grumble Grumble

So, our payroll is due every other Friday by 5:30. This Monday being a holiday (and when payroll would normally be finalized), they want to do payroll early. Yesterday, they said "have it in by noon". Okay, fine. I gather and process all the payroll for a staff of 20, so this rearranges my morning plans. You know, plans of chatting with my friends on messenger (hi dan4th!), bitching about my move yesterday, relishing my second cup of coffee, etc. I get in, and a high importance email has been sent--Payroll now due by 10:00! Scurry! I bust my ass from 8:30 to 10:00 to get this processed to give to the big boss who needs it...and the motherfucker hasn't even come in the office yet. It's 10:15. Having four bosses is bad enough, but four lazy inconsiderate irrationally demanding bosses is just torture. I should have padded my timesheet.
