ATTENTION PARTY ANIMALS! [16 Oct 2009|05:20pm]

batstatic
[ mood | accomplished ]

Where will the Cat's Meow, the Hippest and Hoppiest, and those who put the "Wow" in Bow Wow be weekend???  The annual Cocktails for Critters benefit for Sante D'or Animal rescue on October 18th - that's THIS SUNDAY!
I have been a volunteer at this fantastic NO KILL animal rescue for the last five months. The animals (mostly cats) here are taken care of with holistic foods, proper veterinary care and lots of love and TLC! Some of the animals have come from the streets, saved from "kill" shelters in their 11th hour and even taken back in if an owner can no longer care for a previous adoptee. Simply put - if I were a homeless cat, rabbit or dog, I would want to be in care at this place until they could find me a loving home (the staff even does an "in-home" check to make sure the adopted pets will have all the best that they deserve.)  For more information about this wonderful animal rescue please go to www.SanteDor.com.

The bad economy has left shelters across the country overcrowded and underfunded - and Sante D'or is no exception. We really need this event to be a HUGE success to continue to support and benefit the near 40 beautiful cats, 3 sweet rabbits and playful dog that currently reside there and continue to provide a safe haven for homeless animals in Los Angeles.

     Sunday, October 18, 2009  4 - 7 PM at

Vermont Ave.Los Angeles, CA 90027

My last plea for donations - desperate times call for desperate measures [17 May 2007|05:06pm]

l_2_the_oser
Hello Everyone!

Im not sure if this is allowed, so Im just going to put it out there - Some of you may or may not know that I have been fundraising and training for the San Diego Marathon benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Cancer Society. The marathon is June 3rd and the deadline to meet my donation quota is May 18th. Thats right, in 1 day I have to come up with $1200. My friends and I have fundraised until our fingers have fallen off (thats right, im typing with my toes - haha jk) and we have lacked the monetary support from our community. So here I am, begging and pleading. Basically, because I personally dont have the $1200 to fullfill my quota, the charity will be sending me to collections - yey. So anything you can spare to give, please do! Hit up your co-workers, friends and family, spread this to everyone you know, maybe your company can donate? Remember all donations are 100% tax deductable (Tax ID # 13-5644916), I can provide a reciept and an official donation request if needed.

You can donate directly into a secure account at http://www.active.com/donate/tntgla/SStroth32 (copy and paste if you cant click on the link)

If you would like some more information about what we're doing check out our myspace at http://www.myspace.com/stef_and_katies_run

Thank you,
Stefanie

Sharon Jones: Funk's Best Kept Secret [04 Aug 2005|04:21pm]

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings (featuring members of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra) @ Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, 90026)

““You’ve got to feel it,” is the first thing that comes from the mouth of seasoned soul singer Sharon Jones when asked what makes great music. “You’ve got to feeel it! In your bones, your heart, in everything and everywhere!” Ms. Jones’s funk pedigree can be traced to her hometown of Augusta, Georgia, the same town that birthed the Godfather of Soul himself: James Brown. Moreover, it didn’t take long for the young Sharon to be encouraged to take the spirit from the gospel and apply it to a more secular setting. This setting was realized when as a teenager she moved with her family to Brooklyn, NY and soon found herself saturated with the pulse of funk and disco. Little time passed before she became a staple within the studios, doing often uncredited back-up work for gospel, soul, disco and blues artists. However, when the commercial music landscape began to radically change during the ‘80s, demand for singers such as Sharon waned, and she soon found herself working at Rykers Island Jail as a corrections officer. Fast forward to 1996. Sharon crosses paths with NYC’s great indie-soul & funk label Desco Records. Sharon’s first full-length album, 2002’s successful Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kingson Brooklyn-based Daptone Records, served to solidify her reputation as Soul Sister # 1. – Bio, Daptone Records

Hear clips from her latest album, Naturally with the Dap Kings featuring a special appearance with Lee Fields.

MU GIVEAWAY - PLEASE RE-ENTER, ALL ENTRIES LOST [25 Jul 2005|06:32pm]

club_spaceland
IF YOU ENTERED THE MU GIVEAWAY LAST WEEK, PLEASE RE-ENTER AS ALL OUR EMAILS WERE LOST WHEN WE SWITCHED SERVERS. THANKS AND SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE!!!

Friday, July 29; 9 PM; 18+
Mu @ The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, 90026)

Trivia Question: Name three pop culture figures that Mu references in her latest album Out of Breach (Output Recordings, 2005)

“Mu (pronounced “Moo”) is the brainchild of Mutsumi and husband Maurice Fulton. He takes care of the jackhammering rhythms, digital handiwork and sinister atmospherics, but it’s Mutsumi–with her lacerating shrieks and grammatically incorrect English–who presides over the ceremonies. Punctuated by R-rated disses, dysfunctional vignettes and piercing shrieks, her energy is fascinatingly expressed. Mu’s stunning 2003 debut Afro Finger and Gel saw the Japanese-born Mutsumi fashion a lyrical world from our cultural refuse. Maurice’s complex, daring production work was a story in itself, but Mutsumi’s contributions edged it into psychological terrain and made it provocative. Here was Western culture being reflected back to us through the eyes of someone who had watched it from the outside. And what’s more interesting than finding out how someone else sees you?”

Email your answer AND your first and last name to contest@spaceland.tv by noon on Friday, July 29. The 6th and 8th person with the correct answer will be put on the guest list for the show.

LA Tour HELP [26 May 2005|12:34pm]

drknbutterfly
hi, everyone

I hope this isn't totally inappropriate, but I'm starting to get really desparate. I'm trying to book a tour of California mid July and haven't had much luck with getting a show in the general LA area. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction? My friend, Kris Racer and I are looking for a show together on either July 16th or 17th. His stuff is in the pop-punk vein while I'm more post-punk w/abrasive guitars. You can check out my stuff at http://www.carolbui.com or http://www.myspace.com/carolbui.

I've tried contacting tons of promoter/club owners, but haven't had any success. Please help!!! We'll play anywhere...someone's living room or basement even!! If you can help, email at booking@carolbui.com or comment in my journal.
