Kurt didn't know days. But Burt woke him up every few hours to drink the tasty. Burt rubbed his tummy to help him go, then took away the things he laid on after they got dirty and replaced them with new ones. Burt held him and snuggled him, and even kissed the top of his head now that nobody else was around. Kurt liked Burt.

Burt talked to him about everything, in low, quiet, gentle tones. Kurt couldn't understand most of it, but it had something to do with the missing Katie person. The big yellow thing in the sky came and went twice, before Burt talked through the talky-box-thingy to somebody else.

“Sorry Phil, I'm taking the week off. You're in charge of everything. Call me if there's an emergency, but I haven't taken a day off in months.” Burt put the talky box away and came back to Kurt. He gave Kurt more tasty drops, then picked Kurt up in a soft flannel shirt that smelled like Burt and held him close as he carried him down the stairs.

“This is the kitchen, Kurt,” Burt said, not caring that Kurt couldn't necessarily understand him. He set Kurt, in the shirt, down on the kitchen counter and started puttering around the kitchen, talking mindlessly to Kurt. Kurt remembered the word that Tina had called Sam, and though about how it sounded. Dad. Kurt liked that word. He wanted to use it for Burt.

Burt kept Kurt close to him all day. They sat on the big, old sofa together, Kurt in his flannel on Burt's chest while Burt watched the big box with the people inside. Kurt felt so safe and warm and loved. He still missed Mama, but Burt did everything for him that Mama had done, only he didn't go away like Mama had. Daddy was even better than Mama. He stayed.

When the big yellow thing wasn't in the windows anymore, and the sky went dark, but the big silver thing was up, Burt took him back up to the big bed again. Burt put Kurt in the nest of soft things again, and laid down next to him. He took the funny thing off his head and Kurt saw how shiny it was and wanted to snuggle it. Kurt tried to stay on his next, but after Burt started making the snoring noises, Kurt got bored. He didn't want to sleep right now. He wanted to explore!

Kurt got up from the nest and walked, slowly, to the end of the bed. He looked down, and saw it was far up, so he backed away from the edge. The big quilt had bumps and mountains everywhere, and Kurt wanted to climb them all! Burt took up half the bed, the quilt flung over him, and Kurt explored. He couldn't climb over the middle of Burt, but he could make it over the hill of Burt's feet. It was a little hard, but once he did it, he was very proud of himself. He'd made it all the way up on top of Burt's feet! He turned and started walking over the bigness of his human. He held his tail out for balance and was mindful of the bandage on his paw. He moved slowly but with purpose, stalking up his human's frame to the top of him. He stopped for a bit to go up and down with the rise and fall of Burt's chest. It was awesome. He approached his sleeping Burt's head and sniffed at Burt's chin. He licked out with his tiny tongue to taste Dad. Dad didn't taste the same as Mama had, but he tasted good. He tentatively put one paw on Burt's face and steadied himself when Burt didn't wake.

It was almost like jumping. Spanning the gap between Burt's chest and face was hard, but Kurt did it, and he hadn't even needed to use his tiny claws. He settled onto Burt's forehead and just laid there, his tail flicking back and forth. Kurt knew that Burt had woken up when he felt him move beneath him, and heard the bubbly, rumbly, sleepy laughter emerge from Burt's mouth. Those strong hands slipped up around him and plucked him from Burt's head as Burt rolled onto his side. Kurt loved his human.
