ABOUT PLUG & PLAY LAW

Plug & Play is a term for Law Firms coined by Mitch Kowalski in his book ‘The Great Legal Reformation: Notes from the Field’ that features Inksters

Mitch Kowalski refers to Plug & Play Platforms when describing law firms such as Inksters who have developed a model where senior lawyers can work as a collective, with enhanced technology and back-office support. Where a hub-and-spoke model exists with a back office “hub” (Inksters have that in the Inksterplex in Glasgow) and “spokes” elsewhere (Inksters’ spokes are currently in Aberdeen, Dunkeld, Edinburgh, Forfar, Inverness, Lerwick, Linlithgow, London, Portree, Renfrew, Thurso and Wick). These spokes grow depending on where new consultant solicitors are geographically based.

Consultant Testimonials

Don’t take our word for it – here’s what our consultant solicitors say:

The Inksters’ model is excellent.

Firms who offer flexible working like Inksters show faith and trust in their people by allowing this model. This is why they are Forward Thinking Lawyers.

The flexible working model gives me and Inksters, the edge in being there when the client needs us. I can, at my choice, work into the wee small hours, then regather strength after rest-time of choice, and serve the client’s and Inksters’ requirements, and get a job done.”

I’m able to be more available to clients as I’m not tied up in administration.

Inksters, demonstrably, is a practice where a single practitioner can have an office established for them.

I’m much more confident to represent Inksters than my previous firm. Inksters is more modern in approach and ethos.

I was ‘credentialised’ by meeting the requirements of the Inksters brand, and given access to products established in the market. Entering networking situations, I confidently brandished the Inksters’ reputation I had been allowed to buy into.

With satisfaction I listed the achievements of the firm, and was often pleased to find positive opinion of the firm already present in fora I visited. At networking events I was a happy salesman who held a product that was an ‘easy sell’ to potential clients, a product which, moreover, allowed me to unsettle even the largest competitors.

A big difference to other firms I have worked in is that Inksters has no hierarchical structure (before or beyond Brian Inkster), and that Brian is willing to consider and build upon ideas of worth that are presented to him.

I have inhabited offices where employee achievement, out of turn, was dangerous folly, and where partnership itself promised only to lock ambition and initiative in a firmer a stalemate than employment. At Inksters there is a general culture of respect and encouragement and a free potential for Brian to effect change.

What is apparent and quantifiable is the amount of effort that Brian puts into a project when he sees merit in it.

The culture here makes me feel more valued. I don’t have to justify to anyone why I’m going to my kids’ events. There’s also autonomy and mutual respect here. Brian is key to what is happening. He has a very clear vision.

I see how much time it would take me to do the things that Inksters is doing for me and there’s value in that.

It has genuinely been the first law firm setting where there is a lack of competition between the solicitors as we are all collaborating towards the common goal of servicing our clients to a high standard and making sure we can all eat at the end of the month. It is a truly unique trait of the firm which is worth its weight in gold.

I have two young children and had reached a point in my life where I thought I might have to make a choice between my family and my career. However, the freedom and flexibility afforded by Inksters’ fee-sharing model means that I can now excel not only as a lawyer, but also as a mother.
