Mar. 19th, 2016 11:38 amLast night my coworkers took me to a place that had jalapeno popper cheeseburgers (with half a brick of deep-fried cream cheese on top) and key lime cheesecake milkshakes (with an actual chunk of cheesecake inside). Last weekend, we got hot dogs topped with grilled onions and cream cheese, and fried mac-and-cheese sticks on the side. Denver is very good at stoner food. (But today I think I will have a salad.)

Which, I have to say, is an improvement over the 1980's.

Date: 2016-03-20 07:03 pm (UTC)Selfishly I am cool with the prevalence of hipster food. Hipster food--especially hipster food in a part of the country very proud of its edible livestock--means that it is possible for me to have a very good, high-quality, skillfully-prepared meal that's almost entirely protein and fat (which in turn means that it's possible for me to have a good and special meal without eating things that cause me pain later).
I am super curious as to what the Denver food scene was like in the 1980s. I am envisioning... well I don't know what I'm envisioning. I have literally no context here. The only thing CO natives tend to tell me about Denver in the 80s is how "scary" and "ghetto" everything I see now was. :(

Date: 2016-03-20 07:09 pm (UTC)Or Bastien's, on Colfax just a bit past The Tattered Cover. I don't think their menu has changed since 1960. Similarly Patsy's, which is in your neck of the woods: new jersey italian, since 1920. My grandmother used to go there in the 1930's, and confirmed in roughly 2005 that it was essentially the same.
The first big change was influx of southeast asian foods, and the second big change was influx of local/organic, that turned into hipster. Third big change is stoner food. We went to Southern Comfort a couple weeks ago, and oh man talk about stoner food.
We should start exploring some of these places!

Date: 2016-03-20 07:11 pm (UTC)I actually declined a suggestion to go to Southern Comfort a few days ago because I just wasn't in the mood for that much of that. Definitely planning on checking it out when I am, though. :)
Yes let's!

Date: 2017-04-06 04:50 am (UTC)I swear this whole town is the land of stoner food. I think there are places that make stoner Thai.
Was mildly nonplussed to bus past your workplace and see that the tilted kilt went out of business. Maybe short skirts and cleavage isn't sufficiently stoner.
