This journal is called 'Social Death', which is a reference to a book by Orlando Patterson called 'Slavery and Social death'. I came across this work whilst being a Classicist-type. More particularly, I lifted the term 'Social Death' because it seemed an incredibly fitting description of life on LJ...

Social Death is in many ways my baby. I try to look after him well, but he still cries a lot (on my behalf).



Me

I am a classicist doing a PhD. I like lots of random things (see interests).

Friending Policy

Firstly, I have a bit of an IRL policy (though this has changed recently!). At the moment, I'm friending non-IRL people, and have created a custom group for IRL friends for things that I only want to discuss with people who actually know me in person.

I don't generally see disagreements as a reason for unfriending people, and am only likely to unfriend you if I didn't know you in the first place and don't seem to have much in common with you.

However, I hope that everyone in every walk of life (the people on my f'list being a subsection thereof) will try to be kind and respectful to others. If you say something needlessly hurtful or disrespectful to me, or to others on my f'list, you should probably expect me to reply with harsh words. I'd generally prefer to keep flame wars and the like out of my journal, because nobody likes a flame war.

There is only one other things that might cause me to unfriend you: being inconsiderate in terms of cutting pictures, etc. (and especially ones that cause me to have to scroll sideways while reading my f'list - grrr!). I only have dial-up, hence my anger.

Content

I comment on lots of random things in my journal. I use a custom filter for anything that is about me personally that I wouldn't want an absolute outsider to read. I use other custom filters for anything sensitive, where I wouldn't want my whole f'list to be able to read it, but only those who are close to me or fall into a relevant category. Generally, I don't consider relevance to be a factor, though I do try to remember to cut things that I think a lot of people on my f'list won't be interested in.
