Support non-mainstream radio! [14 Oct 2005|11:35pm]

njdinergirl
Hello, this is just a small plug for a fundraiser my radio station is doing. We're a college/community/high school radio station, we try to play music that doesn't get played on mainstream radio. We'll be in the Woodbridge Mall this weekend, (which is in New Jersey, if you're around you should stop by!). We're trying to raise money to have our transmitter moved so we can have a larger broadcasting area. We do play Democracy Now! every week, Monday through Friday from 6-7pm, and Amy Goodman will be stopping by on Sunday between 11am-noon. If you'd like to listen to the station it's 90.3FM in Piscataway, NJ, or you can listen online at http://thecore.rutgers.edu

If you'd like to donate (there are things you can get w/ your donation, like a t-shirt, or a glass --so it's like over priced shopping), and donations are tax deductable please visit my donation page at:

if you have any questions feel free to email me at rsducky at hotmail dot com

thank you for your time.

An introduction. [27 Aug 2004|04:44pm]

axver
Recently joined this community, so I thought I would introduce myself. The name is André, better known to some as Axver or "that U2 fanboy," New Zealander currently residing in Australia, and so on. ( The rest of the intro.Collapse )

That'll do now, and I hope this post fitted in with the theme of the community. If I may be so bold as to do some shameless promoting, I'd like to encourage you all to take an interest in the crisis in Darfur, Sudan and consider joining darfur_crisis. I doubt any artists (at least major ones) have taken an interest in that crisis yet, but if they have, I would very much like to know.

Have a good one,
André/Axver

Link:
Devil Music: Race, Class, & Rock and Roll
Russell Sage College student John Bulmer's thesis traces the history of rock as a genre, blossoming out from under significant racial and class oppression to become "a force, an expression, and a cultural mirror." Illustrates vital need for sociopolitical expression in rock music. "It is a music of escape, and motivation, of political messages, and class oppression."

Book:
David Crosby's Stand and Be Counted: Making Music, Making History : The Dramatic Story of the Artists and Causes That Changed America. I haven't read it yet, but it is reported to be a nice big book of clippings (think Woodstock, No Nukes, Live Aid) that form a short history of how music has influenced and changed the world, and the political power inherent in a well-written rock song.

Today's Quote:
"People think it's an odd look; a rockstar hanging out with politicians, but to be fair, it's uncool for both of us."

Just a quick hello. . . [20 Jun 2004|03:51pm]

Saw the posting in bonofans and figured music and the left was all right with me. Glad to see you guys here. . .

I noticed that you do not have Michael Franti or Spearhead under interests, and I wanted to suggest adding either one or both. I am actually in the midst of running Michael Franti's travel journal on a day-by-day basis covering his journey through Iraq, Israel, and The Middle East. It is an amazing read, and will give you a real sense of why he deserves to be listed in this community.

Anyhow, looking forward to what this community has to offer. . .

Peace and One Love,

Darshan
