The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.
The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFE campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution
Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student

I was actually wondering if ya'll might be able to give me some advice. I created a queer art display at the University of Florida, and the entire thing was censored (mother fucking queerphobes)...so my latest efforts have been to tie together the community, and see what can be done. At this point, it seems my efforts might need to take some concrete construction (I'm even thinking of starting a "gay shame organization" ... modelling after gayshamesf.org...there's already a Queer Activist Group, but I think this may need a specific structure at this point.
the thing is the wanna-be mainstream LGBT group has resisted supporting this issue as it wants to remain apolitical. So any advice as to what might be done would be lovely. I've thought of flyering, failed at contacting newspapers but tried, a kiss-in right in front of the University space . . . i want to get as much attention and in as uneuphemized manners as possible.
I've written more about this in my LJ if you care to browse it around for more details.
Curious, what are the thoughts of starting a gay shame group considering there already is a similar group on this campus? So yea, annnnyyyyy ideas for activism would be lovely.

Is anyone else in this community a member of the queer studies listserv that operates out of SUNY Buffalo? An article on "bear studies" came across it today that I thought might be of interest to some people in this community.

| Lesbian Forest Artist Journal |
[15 Oct 2006|09:46pm] |
Has anyone ever read a book that was the journal of a lesbian artist who lived half the year in the forest? Mostly it was about her survival in the forest.
What was this book called? It was probably published in the 1970s or 1980s.

[20 Aug 2006|11:27am] |
There's an interesting article in today's Style Section of the New York Times about lesbians & transgender men. I've copied & pasted it here for those who don't have an account (which is free, however) with nytimes.com
The Trouble When Jane Becomes Jack By Paul Vitello Published: August 20, 2006
In the most recent season of the lesbian soap opera, “The L Word,” a new character named Moira announced to her friends that, through surgery and hormone therapy, she would soon be a new person named Max. Her news was not well received.
“It just saddens me to see so many of our strong butch women giving up their womanhood to be a man,” one friend said.
( much much moreCollapse )
Cross-posted like hell. My apologies (kind of).

Hi, I just joined this community for suggestions and reading tips, etc. I'm getting a PhD in Creative Writing and one of my preliminary exams is going to be in Contemporary Queer Fiction. I have compiled a brief, preliminary list, and was wondering if you could give me advice--can you all recommend any titles that are vital and absent from my list? I'm looking for mid to late 20th century literature. Thank you in advance, so much...please excuse my ignorance, my primary emphasis is (usually) in poetry. Love to all. ~Leigh

I am in the very early planning stages of writing fiction about a middle aged, predominantly hetrosexual male who is a (closeted, if the term is appropriate for use in this sense) cross dresser. I very much want to do this idea justice, and not have it turn into something of a joke. I want to look at people's responses to it (namely that of his closet male friend) and his own feleings about it/people knowing about it. Anything you could offer me that might be useful - I'm looking for a broad spectrum of information so I can build up an accurate understanding of this character within my mind. To be honest, I know nothing past a basic level of cross dressing. Mostly, what I'm interested in is how cross dressers feel about it themselves.
Thanks.

I'm writing a paper on female masculinities, starting at Halberstam, taking off through some gender bending movies, and taking some labels into account. Check out what I have so far, label wise, and feel free to add/complain/amend what I've found after a preliminary sweep.

| Hi XD |
[05 Apr 2006|12:29am] |
Short intro bit, with the necessary back story: I'm 16, english and from the part of england that's still in the middle ages, female, catholic family though I'm not religious I was bought up with it so for a while I struggled with the moral side of things, and I'm currently going through a sexuality crisis kinda thing where feelings that surpass friendship have developed with my best friend. It started with jokes about how close we are, and then doing things for effect like touching each others legs under the desk (i don't know how that was ever for effect, to be honest) became very definately not for effect. It took a long time for us to work up to talking about it, and when we did talk about it it took a long time to actually *say* anything. You know, we would talk about "this thing" but never actually admit anything. We've steadily over the past couple of months talked about it more and in more detail. I made the mistake of getting carried away thinking about the stuff like "do I want to risk our friendship" and how much other people's opinions would matter to me, and skipped the difficult part of figuring out what I want. So...emotional side of things - she's the most important person in my life, I'm happier when I'm around her, all the sentimental stuff. Sexual side of things I'm a lot less sure on - close contact does get a reaction out of me but this could be just because it's contact, instead of a sign of specific feelings towards her. I don't think there's a lot of attraction there (there is some) but there is a desire to be physically close to her. Both of us have been in relationships with guys before.
SO! I'm not just ranting about my personal situation (well, I kinda am) but I'm offering this up for in-depth discussion. I will be happy to answer any questions, from any angle and about any aspect. If anyone has anything they think it might be helpful for me to read, I'd be grateful.

We probably won't be able to pay you as it's all very low-budget but we *might* be able to pay petrol costs if you let us know how much you require etc. It's all for a good cause anyway! And we'll prob be able to put you up for the weekend if you so wish...

| Viktor und Viktoria |
[12 Mar 2006|04:20am] |
Hello all. I'm brand new here. Quick intro: I'm a junior at Syracuse University, minoring in LGBT Studies (brand new program that I apparently helped pass), and I'm bisexual/lesbian/whatever.
Onwards.
I'm working on a project where I will be looking at the 1933 German film "Viktor und Viktoria" and its 1982 remake with Julie Andrews, through Judith Halberstam's essay on female masculinities. In particular, I will be focusing on the moment in both films when Victor(ia) removes the female wig to reveal short "male" hair beneath, thus exposing his/herself to "really" be a man.
[If you are unfamiliar with the film, in the updated version, Victoria lives as Victor in order to do drag as a woman, Victoria. Excellent "genderfuck" movie. The original is different]
I'm going to do some historical research into the sociopolitical atmosphere of Germany at the time the film was made, attempt to find someone who speaks fluent German to watch the film with, etc., but my question is this:
Anyone know of any critical analysis type articles on hair length and how that pertains to gender identity? (Ie, hair stereotypes, gender roles and hair, hair and signals it sends, etc.)
[If you help me, credit will be given as it is due. Also... goink my thesis topic and I goink you. 'Nuff said. I can make it happen.]

hello everyone! i am an undergraduate student at UCLA and i am writing an article for FEM magazine about degrading and misogynistic popular music. if you have any thoughts or input on the topic, please leave a comment. also, it would be great if you let me know if it is okay for me to use your opinions in my article. i am trying to be as broad as possible and not write about a certain topic of music. i'd rather focus on the effects of these songs on real women. thanks!

| the novel Frankenstein & Queer Theory |
[17 Dec 2005|04:45pm] |
Hope it's ok to post this here:
Hey all...does anyone know (without going to any/much trouble) some good essays that theorize Mary Shelley's Frankenstein from a queer theorist perspective (other than work done by my own personal god, Judith Halberstam) ???
Many thanks for any suggestions!

Hello All-
I just started a new blog and I'd love it if you could take a second to check it out, and maybe leave some feedback. It's my slightly unorthodox, queer, feminist perspective on working in the sex industry in New York City.

The gender theory nerds here will appreciate that last night, I stood next to Kate Bornstein as she bowed down to Suzanne Kessler and Wendy McKenna.
I mean, life doesn't get better than that if you're a nerd like me.
