The Impossible Fortune (Thursday Murder Club #5) by Richard Osman. This one just didn't grab me. Too many criminals, not enough Murder Club.

Xmas
was good, though delayed until Monday. I had a nice time, even if one of my gifts to my parents was redundant. The food was pretty great, though.

yarning/etsy
My Rock Star Lestat art doll sold on Christmas Day! Yay!! After which I finished a donation hat. And then another hat while reading Yuletide. I missed yarn group due to traveling for Xmas, though I got a commission for a Kermit green kickbunny, so I worked on that over my belated holiday. And I got a commission for an Older Daniel Molloy art doll yesterday, yay, so I'll be working on that over the next couple of days.

The Fortune of War (Aubreyad #6) by Patrick O'Brian. Very satisfying, if occasionally super gross. I'm rationing these, because I'll be sad when they're over.

Ancient Iran and Its Neighbours: Local Developments and Long-range Interactions in the 4th Millennium BC by Cameron A. Petrie (Editor). 2013. I started this an age ago & put it down in the middle of the driest of dry articles. It's a lot of archaeology, and little of it is engaging, but I love the general subject matter so I finished it.

I went to yarn group Sunday and had a good time, though I messed up the bunny I worked on there, doh. Adding a Made To Order option in my etsy shop for kickbunnies was a good idea. I've had several sales already, and also the burgundy and rose pink ones keep selling out. Etsy's color of the year for 2026 is "Patina Blue," or blue copper, which is basically teal, so I'm focusing on burgundy and teal now, while hoping the brown and yellow bunnies in the shop will eventually sell. A fun aside: my Santa from the Kitten Academy holiday card exchange drew a great, colorful scene in the card he sent -- a Christmas tree filled with cats and two kickbunnies looking up at them from in front of a fire in the fireplace. A very happy-making surprise!

yuletide
I've been volunteering as a SPAG beta on the Yuletide discord & have gotten to preview some really cute/sweet/charming fics! Fic reveals are THIS AFTERNOON!! and I cannot wait! \o/

( healthcrap ) However, the flu is, and my brother has it, so Christmas is delayed until he gets better and has a few days off again, whenever that will be. At least I'll have Yuletide to keep me company.

I had a good time! I got some new shirts, some yarn, a cat-shaped trivet, and winter socks. The gifts I gave went over well, too. Also, the family was well-behaved, so I didn't have to hide in the guestroom.

I made 3 1/2 kickbunnies over the visit to my parents', plus finishing another yesterday. They're listed and I need to promote them today.

The registration sticker to my car came. I've been cleaning the house in fits and starts. I have too much stuff and need to donate a box or three. I overate at Thanksgiving but didn't at xmas, so here's hoping my shirts start to get a little less snug around the belly soon. (I look fine, I just don't want to buy new shirts.)

I hope all of you are doing well and had a wonderful holiday season, whatever you celebrate! Again, happy new year! And may we have a surprisingly awesome 2025! <333

Happy Yuletide! After several revisions, I'm pretty pleased with how my fic turned out, and I hope the recipient likes it. the recipient left a glowing comment, yay!

books
- Manufacturing Consent by Herman and Chomsky (2008). There was much less revision than I'd hoped for, and so this was mostly a rehash of the tribulations of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua during the Carter and Reagan administrations and how the NY Times handled it. They excoriate the propaganda but they also demonstrate the methods used, which are essentially the same as those used now, substituting social media and the 24 hour news cycle. Unfortunately nothing I didn't already know, having studied these things in depth in undergrad.

~ The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. Overhyped. Not terrible, but not as great as advertised.

+ currently reading: Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism by George Monbiot and Peter Hutchison. A tightly written analysis of how the global system of neoliberal capitalism is ruining the world. Eat the billionaires, indeed.

etsy
As of Dec 13, I had to stop selling to the EU due to a law there requiring all businesses doing business there to have a representative THERE. Which I don't. Which nearly zero non-EU etsy sellers have. It's stupid. I can still ship to GB, though not to Northern Ireland. It's all such bad policy. Also, a bunny I shipped took three full weeks to make from here to Ohio, wtf. Also, I don't know how long I'm staying with my aged parents, so I packed up my entire shop and brought it with me. Last, my after-Christmas sale starts tomorrow. Get $25 off orders of at least $65. That's a great deal if you want to buy a bunch of stuff or nab a vampire doll at a good discount.

yarning
Sunday was the holiday party. It was full of things I'm allergic to, but that's all right. It's nice to hang out with them. I finished the latest kitten academy kickbunnies and another indigo and denim kickbunny. I'm working on a turquoise one now.

Again, I hope everyone's doing well! Safe travels and happy holidays! <333

Happy Thanksgiving, US-ians! Safe travels and pleasant, cozy visits to you all!

books
On Freedom by Timothy Snyder. Yeah, I really prefer his Substack posts and history books. This was more philosophy of Freedom and partial memoir and had only a partial argument. Kind of a frustrating read.

They Knew by Sarah Kendzior. OMG this is amazing. I've been reading her articles for years but seeing it all together like this is mindblowing. Basically this is a book about cases in which corruption was going on, and those in power ignored it. Totally worth the cost of admission. Next up is her Hiding in Plain Sight, from several years ago.

currently reading In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. This is going to take months to read but I wanted something I could crochet to without fury at the corrupt system tightening my gauge.

ebay
I'm selling 18 inch doll clothes on ebay for a friend, or I will be, once I get photos taken and the listings done. (I already detangled the doll's hair.) There's no rush on this, so I'm putting it behind the need to make things for my etsy shop. However, I'll be using the same ebay shop to list action figures I no longer love. I have photos of those already, I just have to list them. Which takes an age.

etsy
First, thanks to those of you who have bought things and supported my little shop! If you need things for people or pets or vampire lovers, I've got you covered!

Second, I had to chat with tech support this weekend because Etsy was marking items sold THAT DAY as shipping late. It's a bug in their system, but it is what cost me my Star Seller badge last month. I always ship early/on time, and yet their software claimed I didn't. I want my star seller badge back! Not that it means anything except a happy little star next to my name, but it was mine and I'd earned it. SIGH. Surveys tell us that reviews are more important than Star Seller, and all my reviews are 5 star, so I will wrap that around me like a cozy scarf and try to be patient re the other thing.

yarning
I only have one refillable kickbunny left, so I've been working on more of those. I had a great success with the non-refillable bunnies going to [youtube.com profile] ASoftPaws, with enough money raised to fund four bunnies. She chose the color scheme for the second pair, and all 4 will go in the mail either today or when I get back from thanksgiving. ION, the catnip-silvervine stuffed mushrooms are super popular! I didn't see that coming, but they're super cute so maybe I should have. The other idea I haven't yet pursued is silvervine sticks with crocheted mistletoe wrapped and knotted (and glued) around them. I don't know if it's a good idea or not. Thoughts?

healthcrap
I'm migraining with ridiculous frequency the past few weeks. I get more botox Christmas week, so yay for that.

holidays
oh shit, xmas is on a Wednesday this year. That will be a nightmare for shipping and travel. Also, that means there's exactly 3 weeks until Yuletide is due. Woe! Hanukkah is late this year, and I've got some interest in catnip-silvervine dreidls, so that's another thing to think about.

I hope all of y'all are doing okay, and if you're traveling, may it be safe and easy. Mercury turned retrograde on Monday, so try to be extra patient and confirm things three times over before you head out. <333

books
I've been rereading all of the Murderbot books since reading the new one and realizing I had forgotten some things. So glad to see System Collapse (the new one) on the NYT Bestseller list. Not sure what to read next.

yarning
I had a really wonderful Black Friday! I sold so many cat toys and kitty xmas ornaments. I've just listed two Pride shawls and a turquoise and navy refillable kickbunny (catnip + silvervine kicker toy). I'm also thinking about listing my octopus collection instead of saving them for an art installation. I mean, I can make more, right? The thing is that they're not cat (or baby) toys, and most of my customer base is buying for their cats. I don't know if there'd be interest.

house
I have a new garbage disposal, yay! The house is a wreck and it was thoroughly embarrassing having maintenance here while I was not ready for them, but yay for being able to use both sinks. I also have a new space heater as my old one started spewing smoke on Sunday night -- just in time for the cyber Monday sales. Could I have waited for xmas? Yes, but I would have either been cold for a month or had to haul my upstairs space heater up and down stairs daily. Worth buying it now.

holidays
Thanksgiving was unusually good. (I hope that doesn't jinx xmas.) I spent most of the time making kickbunnies and listening to books. Also watching or pretending to watch college football. (That Iron Bowl, whoa.) I ate really well and forgot to bring home some of the food set aside for me, doh! Maybe mom will freeze it for xmas.

yuletide
I keep adding to this fic and it keeps getting further away from the prompts, though at least it contains the requested characters. I COULD shoehorn more of the requested relationship in, but I'm not sure if it would break the story. AUGH.

things

sage: close up of a slice of lemon held up against the sky, dripping (season: summer)
1. I'd spoke too soon about the AC getting fixed. It never cooled off after the Wednesday repair, so Friday they sent an emergency crew to replace a dead capacitor. So: new thermostat, new disconnect box, total rewiring of all the things, new fuses, and new capacitor. It works now, so it isn't total agony to be upstairs in my office where the laptop is.

2. I bought a tv. I haven't had a tv in nearly a decade and hardly watched it for the five years prior, but I've been turning my downstairs into studio space and wanted my default youtube stream on with the option of Prime and PBS. So that is a thing I've been getting used to. I had a conversation with Therapist about it, because I used to watch tv constantly, before it became a migraine trigger, and I don't want it to become an addiction again. She then stopped me and disputed the term "addiction," describing how ADHD and television are their own complicated thing that needs specialized structure and active management. I'm only a year and a half into my ADD diagnosis, even though I've had it my whole life and still feel wildly underinformed. I've been tracking down books on how ADD works in female-bodied humans (I don't have the hyperactivity, thus deleting the H) so I can educate my damned self. Book recs welcome!

3. Ironically, I am writing this after fighting a migraine all day, but the tv is no longer a migraine trigger unless it's strobing. Thank somebody. Now if only I could get more than a few minutes into anything before I hit pause and wander off.

4. Mercury stationed direct yday, tonight is solstice (~10:32pm CDT, I think), and today is Father's Day in the US. Much love to everyone who finds today challenging due to absent or awful dads. Please remember that their bullshit is on them and was never ever your fault.

5. Juneteenth
When I was a kid we used to go camping at Galveston Island every other weekend, which many years put us there on Juneteenth Weekend, sitting in tourist traffic in the midst of a freaking glorious street party. My parents never explained, because Deep South upbringing and still being scarred by growing up caught in the horrific racist backlash to the Civil Rights movement, but it was always featured on the local Houston news (which always sent a crew over to Galveston for live coverage), so I learned the history at the source. It was joyous. It was about celebrating the elevation of Black people from property to humans with rights and personhood and dignity. Which seemed completely obvious to me in my very-integrated, high-immigrant school system, but I was a *child* and still completely naïve to the underlying powder keg.

Note: I did not learn about Juneteenth in school, because Texas. And yet, back when I was in White Collar fandom, I found myself in the really weird position of being a white person educating other humans about Juneteenth. I posted this as the Juneteenth entry for the Month of June fest & am still ridiculously proud of it for both managing to portray an empowered Black woman being awesome and to sketch in enough history to ring true. No knowledge of canon needed.

Happy New Year!
Wishing a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year to us all! Welcome, 2020 -- please be kind.

The past week has brought awesome and wise PT help, medico-bureaucratic nightmares, a therapeutic paraffin hand bath, epic cleaning, a strange new tolerance for fireworks and ambient noise thanks to the new med, the discovery of a baby flower spike on the orchid that still has a live old one, a new art challenge for January, a cascade of flowers (dozens!) on my string of pearls senecio, a lot of pain I have to find a new way of managing, completing 75% of a tabby amineko (mostly thanks to waiting rooms), absolute confirmation that I'm allergic to shrimp (oh the rash), learning our apts are getting new siding this year (hooray siding, boo construction noise), and the med side effects I've ridden like a roller coaster through December finally, maybe, abating.

Experiencing Yuletide as an observer for the first time in 14 years has been srsly weird. But getting a zillion notifications this morning from writers I subscribed to and used to see posting on DW or LJ back in the day...IDK. Maybe a reunion sort of feeling? Warm and fuzzy and nostalgic and full of me hoping everyone's doing well, wherever they are now. I'm hoping at least some of those fics will be in fandoms I know.

And, yeah, maybe some envy of people having the time and creative drive to write. I've been down to writing one fic a year for so long -- and then nothing at all for 2019 -- but I still have ideas sometimes. Maybe the new medical regimen will help jumpstart my word brain.

Anyway, I hope all of you are doing well and that 2020 treats you wonderfully. <333

On the drive to the parents' this weekend, I listened to Pratchett's The Shepherd's Crown. Not long after I arrived, their neighbor from Scotland came over to visit. I was SO CLOSE to asking him to say "Crivens!" for me, but in the end I just kept asking him questions about his life so I could keep listening to his accent. *g* Really lovely old man who's led an amazing life, really lovely chat. And he hugged me when he left. I think maybe he was touched to have someone express an interest.

holidays
( unexpected things are unexpected )

wildlife
Sunday evening there was a flock of more than 100 robins out behind my parents' house. I've never seen anywhere near that many together. Astonishing. There was also a line of ripped up turf along the driveway where feral hogs came through...again. To say nothing of the wallow way out back. Also, barking that could have been dogs gotten loose or, more likely, coyotes. Wish I'd remembered to take the camera.

healthcrap
This has been the worst month for healthcrap in recent memory. I am so impatient to feel human again. And get my brain back.

new year's wishes
In 2018 I did not do a daily wish jar as in the previous two years. I'm planning to do one for 2019, though. I have a long list of wishes/intentions ready to copy out, 365 slips of paper, and a jar for them to go into. And I think I remember how to do the origami fold to make each one sekrit until unfolded. Also, tape and a notebook to log them each day next year for proper serendipity tracking/navel-gazing. Looking forward to it.

dirt
I gave the parents some plants, including mom a $5 pachira aquatica (money tree) from the discount rack at Lowes, which she was more excited about than anything I can remember. My decapitated adenium (desert rose) is finally putting out new growth! Maybe it will recover! My arugula pan is even more full of sprouts than last week. And I got a proper light rig for the terrarium so I can redo things in style. \o/

Hope y'all are well! <333

books
From Cold War to Hot Peace by Michael McFaul. Professional memoir and recent US-Russia political history by policy wonk, scholar, and 2012-2014 US ambassador McFaul. The parts about his 3 years in DC before getting sent to Russia were really uneven, but the ambassadorial stuff and the unprecedented harassment by Russians was hard to put down (very much a prelude to 2016). Putin is apparently both out of his mind and an excellent chess player. Which I kind of knew, but it's interesting to see confirmed from source who was willing to engage Putin on his own terms. It'll be interesting to see if there's a second edition post-Trump, or if he'll just write an entirely new book.

I also washed the door and door sill, so my front porch has gone from Zombie House to Hello I Am Making An Effort Here House! The New Colossus
by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Mother of exiles, indeed. Happy Fourth, y'all, and, as always, on behalf of me and other folks with limiting health issues, THANK YOU for marching, protesting, and showing up to be counted. We need you (I need you), and I'm grateful. ♥

first, some terrible news
Lucy, my parents' cat, passed away on Friday night after a brief illness. I am really broken up about it. She was about to turn thirteen. I helped my parents pick her out at the adoption fair when she was seven weeks old, the same event where they got her giant canine sister, who died last May. I wish I knew what happened. I hate feeling so helpless and angry when it's too late to do anything about it anyway. RIP, tiny fierce predator. I loved you bunches.

second, the health crap
Lungs saga update: Turns out last week's relapse was allergy-related, not viral. My body was freaking out because I wasn't quite over the existing bronchitis when tree pollen sent everything back into active infection mode. (I hate doxycycline and albuterol is magic.) However, last night the fever & sinus infections returned and I got almost no sleep. This morning I woke up feeling as if I'd fallen down a flight of stairs, and pain meds have only slightly taken the edge off. (WHYYYY? OMG WHY CAN'T I BE WELL AGAIN?)

books
A Royal Pain (Her Royal Spyness #2) by Rhys Bowen. Kind of regretting this one as it falls apart with a single completely obvious logic fault, and that sort of thing drives me crazy. I'm also over the rich white English people historical mystery genre (again) and craving...IDEK what. Feminism. Low suspense. Magic. Absence of the stupid stick. Got recs? Pro or fannish would be equally lovely. *hopeful eyes*

yarning
Prior to yesterday, I'd been going all out on the commissions, using a time tracker to find out how many hours I'm actually putting into them. I had forgotten how much longer custom work takes, much less complex color work. Still, it's been a really fun challenge so far! I just wish the remaining work didn't require super close attention to detail.

valentines
For me, Valentine's Day is for celebrating ALL the positive relationships in your life and banishing the negative ones to the Void, never to return. I'm wishing you all a day filled with love, kindness, fun, and just the right amount of time spent with Other People. 💕💖💕

Thanks to Cate & Ny for the cards! They're lovely! Apologies to everyone who's left comments that I haven't replied to. I feel like I've been going nonstop since October...which I suppose I have in a way. First I was sick, then Grandma died, then Thanksgiving, then xmas, then toss in a half dozen doctor's appointments, weeks of yuletide research, weeks of yuletide writing, and weeks of yuletide panic, and here we are. Thank you for sticking around despite the radio silence on my part. Here's hoping things will ease up now.

holiday
Everyone thought the terrarium I made my brother was store-bought. From this angle you can only see a little of the watch chain crassula, which is actually planted all the way around, with the ogre's ears in the middle (leaves like Shrek's ears! *g*). I put a stegosaurus and triceratops in the bowl and gave him the rest of the package of tiny dinos in case he wanted to change them out. He said he was going to rearrange his desk at work so I think that's a win.

I drove home yesterday through two hours of dense fog, which at one point had thickened to about 50 ft visibility. I was happy to get in line behind a slow driver and let the scary pickups take the fast lane.

Sunday, about 16 hrs before the deadline, I closed the lid of my laptop to go downstairs & when I opened it 30 seconds later, Windows was updating itself. I said, "Okay, this will be fine," and then reopened Scrivener, where my ##,### word story was down to 1200 words. And so were all five of the backups. Cut for losing my shit and wailing on the Yuletide Discord Bears channel (so much gratitude for them), and then after deeper poking into all the various scrivener folders I could find on Dropbox, I dug up 100 tiny rtf files with all the little scenelets I'd written and outlined. WORDS RECOVERED! It took 45 minutes to paste everything into a new doc (on Libre Office, not scriv. Sorry, Scriv), and then I spent the next 10 hours working on the last section. Bus pass draft posted. Final draft still...uh. Well. I'm still going all out to make it something I can stand to have my name attached to...except I spent 4 hours at the orthopedist today and am incoherent with exhaustion. I'm hoping food will help.

holidays
Solstice is TOMORROW! It is exact at 16:28 GMT, 10:28am CST. Tomorrow will be one second shorter than today in my time zone. I'm not sure if the nights are of equal length. Perhaps I'll just burn candles both nights. Oh, and, this morning the sun came out and burned off the fog. I hadn't seen the sun in a week. It was delicious.

Now to fling myself back into the salt mine and get the last third of the fic rewritten. And then I can beg for a speed Britpick and possible beta. (It doesn't need SPAG. More like gathering up the dropped threads and inevitable plotholes and no that is not how one uses the word "whilst", sorry.)

Best of luck to everyone doing final edits! <333

Mercury turned retrograde Sunday at the tail end of Sagittarius and will remain ret until Dec 22, 7:51pm CST. Sag has innate challenges with communication anyway (oversharing, garbled meanings, tangents, etc.), so this will be an interesting 3 weeks to see what happens. The AO3 has had an error where Yuletide comm members' fics were revealed on posting, which, oversharing, hah! Politically speaking, please gods let the current US administration {continue to} confess to everything. On the record. With evidence. And no defense. Sag is the natural ruler of all things legal and judicial, ftr, so if there is a gross miscarriage of justice such as the firing of Mueller, then prepare to see rioting and mass protests in defense of the law. (Cops, they will be so confused. Let's hope things stay peaceful.)

yuletide help?
I need Brits, especially people familiar with, uh, sekrit mumblety-hum things. I'm flailing in the nitty gritty of fic research, some of which has to do with relatively recent British history and I need some RL perspective. If you think you can give it a shot, can I email/IM you? Plz leave a comment below & I'll get in touch. Thank you! <3

Thanksgiving
wasn't too bad, though I got ZERO Yuletide work done, thanks to family obligations. I did get some awesome snuggle time with my mom's fierce tiny yellow cat, though. Here she is being adorable.

house/writing gah
+ I love my white sheets and red blanket and white accent blanket and espresso brown furniture and 14 bedroom houseplants. *happy*
~ I moved the office chair upstairs and heroically put it back together (oh god ow). Unfortunately, I then realized why I'd stopped using the desk in the first place: it puts me in a position that hurts the hell out of my upper back. I'm hoping with enough adjustments to the heights of things, and/or acquiring a spare monitor, I can fix this. Or else relearn how to write while sitting on my couch. (Or both! Both would be good.)

Nothing quite like the ONE MONTH TIL DEADLINE post to get me moving. Of course, this is a daily pendulum swing between researching ALL THE THINGS and, oh, moving furniture around the house while I process. Still no words on the page yet and that's freaking me out a little. I need to be further ahead in the process than I am.

RL news cycle
Can we finally stop glamorizing Getting Away With It culture now? Running a stop sign when there's literally no one else on the road is one thing; systematic predation of other human beings by the amoral is another matter entirely.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are observing it!
This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for Bob Mueller and his staff, all the courageous women who have stepped up this year, Danica Roem, WaPo, Kitten Academy, and all my healthcare ppl who've gotten me to this place. It is so freaking weird to be feeling this good, so I'm just trying to enjoy it without any expectations.

I'm wishing all of you a safe, patient, and kind holiday weekend...or, you know, the rest of your week, if you're elsewhere. <3

I wrote fic for The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth series) by N.K. Jemisin. Spoilers for Book #1 only. Per the request, the fic is set during the idyllic time in Meov before disaster comes.

Additional Tags: Threesome - F/M/M, Polyamory, Negotiations, Canon Character of Color, Canon polyamory, Queer Canon, Chromatic Yuletide, Misses Clause Challenge

And what I received! This is a continuation of the novella, and it feels very, very true to canon. Best if you've read EHaD fairly recently, as the cast of characters is pretty big, but if you like Seanan McGuire, totally worth it.

The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side (20499 words) by Amazing_E_ko

Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Worldbuilding
Summary: Nancy has left her old life behind, but when Jack comes tumbling through a portal bearing news of an apocalypse, her sister speaking prophecy from beyond death, Nancy is pulled back into the world of living, breathing things. With the help of Kade and Christopher they must unravel the mystery of the disappearing worlds, and uncover the truth behind all their journeys.

And I also want to wish you all a joyous, healthy, and prosperous new year for you and yours, full of credible truth, legit justice, and utmost respect for everyone's civil liberties and human rights. We can get through this. <333

Something
comes into the world unwelcome
calling disorder, disorder—

If you hate me so much
don’t bother to give me
a name: do you need
one more slur
in your language, another
way to blame
one tribe for everything—

as we both know,
if you worship
one god, you only need
One enemy—

I’m not the enemy.
Only a ruse to ignore
what you see happening
right here in this bed,
a little paradigm
of failure. One of your precious flowers
dies here almost every day
and you can’t rest until
you attack the cause, meaning
whatever is left, whatever
happens to be sturdier
than your personal passion—

It was not meant
to last forever in the real world.
But why admit that, when you can go on
doing what you always do,
mourning and laying blame,
always the two together.

I don’t need your praise
to survive. I was here first,
before you were here, before
you ever planted a garden.
And I’ll be here when only the sun and moon
are left, and the sea, and the wide field.

I will constitute the field.
