Hi there,
I know some members from this group have participated in our research, so I wanted to send along a quick update and to let you know that we are still recruiting participants for our research on self-harm. The Characteristics Associated with Self-Injury Study began in March 2009. Since we began, over 350 people from 18 different countries have participated in this study. 83 people are currently participating in the longitudinal portion of the study, completing questionnaires every three months. This part will help us understand patterns of self-injury over time, as well as what motivates people to recover or stop from self-injuring.
Below is some more information about the study. Please email us at perl@sfu.ca if you have any questions or if you are interested in participating!
Best wishes! The Personality and Emotion Research Lab
************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Hello again from the Personality and Emotion Research Laboratory (PERL)!
Would you like to help us understand how to help people who self-harm? We are currently recruiting participants for the second phase of our research on self-harm, and we want your help! Participating in the study takes 2 hours, and you will receive an online gift certificate worth $10 CAD for each time point you complete, plus a chance for a $25 bonus if you complete all the follow-ups for a total of $75.
If you are interested in participating, please email us at perl@sfu.ca. All your information will be kept confidential, and no identifying information is linked to your responses.
************************************************************** THE DETAILS:
Background Information:
Self-injury (sometimes called “self-harm”) involves harming yourself on purpose. Some examples include cutting or burning yourself, taking an overdose of pills, or banging your head. Right now, very little is known about why people start or stop self-harming. The Personality and Emotion Research Lab (PERL), a research team from Simon Fraser University in Canada, is conducting a study to learn more about the experiences of people who self-harm, and we want your help! We are interested in how emotions, life experiences, stress and coping styles affect self-harm. We hope that this research will help other people understand more about why people self-harm and what they can do to help.
What you can do:
If you want to participate in this study, you will fill out online questionnaires on self-harm, emotions, coping, symptoms, and life events. These questionnaires will take approximately 2 hour to complete. Later, you’ll have a chance to complete follow-up questionnaires over a 12 month period. Although the first session is long, the follow-up questionnaires are shorter, and usually take on 30 to 90 minutes to complete.
Who can participate:
We are looking for people who currently self-harm (whether you are trying to stop or not), AND those who have self-harmed in the past and quit. You must be at least 16 years old to participate.
What’s in it for you:
Participants who complete the questionnaires will receive a $10 (Canadian currency) gift certificate each time you complete the questionnaires (from amazon.com or PayPal). In addition, you will receive a $25 bonus if you complete all five follow-ups in the first year! Telling us about your experiences will give us important information on how self-harm changes over time, and could help develop and improve treatments for people who want to stop self-harming.
Important Information:
This study is the second phase of this line of research, and builds on the previous study. If you have already participated in our research (in a study called “Characteristics Associated with Self-Injury”), you are still eligible to complete this study.
Please contact us at perl@sfu.ca if you are interested in participating or if you have any questions.
Thank you,

cold turkey was unbelievably easy, march 8th will mark a year. mainly because it was my own decision to, nobody was forcing me to quit because i never told anyone. it was the understanding that noone really cares about anyone else. "You only ask about someone else's weekend so you can talk about your own." there's no point hating yourself when there are so many other people and things to hate. you're all you have, don't fuck that up. you're not a tragedy or a disaster. everyone has a shitty life, it's just how you deal with it.
get busy living or get busy dying.

5:23 pm - New Book About Cutting Released May 2007
|

My name is Vanessa and I have struggled with anorexia for 20 years and self-injury for more than 30 years. In a quest to understand the reasons behind my behavior, I entered an intensive therapy program and the insight I gained was so valuable, I decided to share my story with others. Comes the Darkness, Comes the Light is a story of self-injury and redemption. By understanding some of the root causes behind my self-injury, I was able to go forward on a path to healing and have just celebrated my first year injury free!
I would love to have you visit my blog and respond to some of my entries!

I'm new to this community so I will just tell you a little background about me. My name is Kari. I'm 19. I started cutting @ 13 but recently quit and haven't in 4 months. I'm bipolar. I was raped twice when I was 16 and diagnosed then with my bipolar in that year. I was misdiagnosed with anxiety and depression disorder at the age of 13. I've been in and out of counseling a few times since then. I'm in counseling now and have been for about 2 years. (since the rapes) If it weren't for counseling i'd be cutting everyday like I use to. I use to cut my wrist and I have the scars. After cutting my wrists and people noticing I went to my hips. One of the rapes being my cousin - now my whole family outcome has fallen apart and been put back together quite weird in that time frame. And I know it'll never be the same. A lot in between that has happened to and i've learned with all of it that I can't trust to well. I use to trust to much. If anyone wants to talk or needs a simple person to just vent with i'm here to talk to-- i'm actually going to college right now to be a psychiatrist. =] I'm on AIM a lot so if you care to contact me my sn is kariileex3 (yes, two i's- it's not a typo lol.) Hopefully I can meet some nice people on here!!! =]

he's trying to stem my flow... he refuses to understand how important cutting is to me: the release, the stillness, the awareness of my self and my pain, and the exquisite sense of calm and comfort it brings. why won't he understand that holding me down in this way causes pain more destructive than his narrow view of cutting as destruction?

Hi. My name is Megan.. I'm kind of shy.
I started self-abusing when I was nine, I'm fourteen now. The last time I cut was about a month and a half ago, but I've been getting urges a couple times a day. I do gymnastics, so it's hard to hide. My boyfriend doesn't approve either, and he pretty much sees everywhere on me. He goes into the fits of not talking to me and telling me it's disgusting. I can't help it. I've had a lot of triggers, too.
Ho hum.

i thought i'd taken it really well. in fact, i thought i'd recovered. i thought i'd forgotten. but suddenly, a few weeks ago, the nightmares started. i have them every night: they won't go away. and every morning, i wake terrified and exhausted. i can't stand to be alone anymore, because every little noise terrifies me. the flashbacks come rushing over me at the most random times. i'm left on edge. i no longer feel strong, and i feel like i have no idea what's going on. i can't talk to anyone about it because ryan won't let me. but i can't talk to him about it because of the way he acts when he remembers. i just... i don't know. this was so unexpected. i thought... i'd forgotten.

Wow. It's been a really long time since I posted anything in this community! Well to start things off again...
My name is Kaitlynn. I am 15 years old and have been cutting since I was 10-11-ish. I stopped for a couple of years but got back into it around age 13-14-ish and Have been doing it steadily since.I usually use the sharp bits from pencil sharpeners, I smash open shavers to get the blades and I have used exacto knife bits...I truthfully dont want to stop but Its been interfering with everything and I hate having to hide it all the time. I really dont want my family to know so I think it is best if I seek help. I have been to help at school((guidance office)) but they dont know the first thing about SI. They think that if they tell you to stop, that you will. HA what a joke! Guidance really didn't work for me...actually it seemed to make it worse. I am also a recovered Bulimic(sp?)I would love to help any people that need advice on eating disorders, being an ex-ish one. Well thats all and I hope that you all stay strong and safe!^^
