Rules of Engagement
So today (of course I wasn't doing this during work hours...) I was toying with ideas for our fantastic fantasy novel, and this is a bit of a rundown of what I came up with. I figure this is as good a place to put it as any. My apologies for the scatteredness of it. I've tried to organize it a bit better from the notes I'd made at work.
So, we agree that:
1. Days, sun, moon, etc. must all have ridiculous names.- Probably Lunara/Luna-rah/Lu'naR'a for the moon
- I submit "Solarios" as a possible name for the sun
- Day and night could be divided into quarters-ish, e.g. quarter-Lunara=9 p.m. in the springtime. This system doesn't exactly work, but I think that's kind of the point.
- Seasons and/or months should have names too. My idea: a season could be called a "tym" (pronounced "time" of course) or something equally silly, where winter = Lunara's tym, summer = Solarios' tym, not sure about the others
2. Made up language.- Spoken by NOTelves.
I'd also like to propose:
3. Gods- We sort of discussed this already. I favour a huge pantheon, but these roles could also be filled by other magical creatures, therefore I'm open to suggestion.
And as for allowed vs. not allowed:
-> Easter eggs - I say allowed (both in the "hidden" content for the alert reader sense and the colourful egg-shaped creatures sense)
-> Deus ex machina - allowed!
-> Breaking the fourth wall - not allowed?
-> Time travel - not allowed?
I think pretty much anything is actually fair game and if there's any doubt it's not like we can't consult each other.
I'd also like to propose a couple other rules:
- all characters may be manipulated at will within a chapter, possibly excepting the other person's "main character" if we decide to tell the story mainly from the points of view of two specific characters (one each, obviously, which I personally think would be a good idea)
- if you introduce a species or character, it's up to you to define their abilities, including any regenerative abilities, before said species or character is wantonly destroyed by the other person
- every chapter ends on a cliffhanger
Of course this assumes that we'll be alternating chapters.
As for the end, I suppose we should write that together, once we're sick of writing chapters? And would you still like to begin? Not just yet, of course, we need to work on rules and such a bit more, obviously, but you know what I mean. Because I don't think I'd be able to start. Although I suppose we could start
and end it together.
Feel free to argue with anything and everything!
