Back at SCCC
So I graduated from SCCC with my AA a few years ago when I was 19, went on to get my B.A. at the University of Washington, but now I'm coming back to take a few classes so I can get a second B.A. in business.  The problem is, after being away for so many years, I don't know anybody there anymore, and would like to make some friends.  I'm 24, gay, and still seriously disturbed that I had to diagram sentences in English 101.  If you're interested, check out my journal and add me as a friend, and i'll be sure to add you back!

Fire Alarm 10- 11-07
Last Thursday around 2:20 pm the fire alarm went off and we were all evacuated. Does anyone know what really happened? Was it a real fire or a prank?

Thanks for any insight.

*waves* Hi from Ohio!
Hi!

I know this sounds pretty crazy, but I'm relocating to Seattle at the end of May. Part of my plan is to go to Seattle Central Community College for Social Work, so I'm looking to make some friends who go there. I do have a question, though. What's the deal with the placement tests? Is it something I'm going to have to wait to do until I actually get to Seattle? No biggie if it is, I'm just too impatient to wait till tomorrow afternoon to call and ask.

A little about me: I'm 29, bisexual, polyamorous, divorced, no kids. (Oh hey, does SCCC have a queer club of any kind?) The move to Seattle is a huge adventure for me. I've never been west of Chicago! I've joined this community and several others in an attempt to make some contacts besides the friends I already have in Seattle.

One opening at the Sherwood Cooperative!
In case anyone here is still looking for housing (or knows someone who is), the Sherwood Cooperative has one opening RIGHT NOW that we need to fill as soon as possible. Sherwood is a 14 member student-run, student-owned house in Seattle's University District. Each member has his or her own room and shares bathrooms, common spaces, and a big kitchen with everyone else. We also share vegetarian and vegan food, have nightly dinners together, and have a strong sense of community. It's a really fun, supportive place to live. The rent is approximately $450 per room, and the monthly total is about $600-$650 (including food, utilities, newspaper, DSL, etc).

Check out our Craigslist ad, which includes pictures: http://seattle.craigslist.org/roo/99922450.html

Student and Youth Activist Conference
Several local organizations, including clubs from Seattle University and Seattle Central Community College, Action Northwest, USAS (United Students Against Sweatshops) and SEAC (Student Environmental Action Coalition) are organizing a Student and Youth Activist Conference the weekend of January 20-22 on the Seattle University campus.

We are in need of two things: One: We would like a band to play a short concert as an event for the conference. Is anyone here in a band, or have contacts with a band, that would be interested in playing?

Two: We need educated people willing to be speakers and panalists. Having a degree in or being associated with a group that deals with the topic on which you would like to speak is manditory. The conference is focused on "environmentalism and social justice", which basically covers anything activist-related.

If you are able and willing to help, either in these two ways or just as an interested citizen willing to advertise (we are also in need of "contacts" from other schools, such as UW, PLU, and SPU), please email warway24@gmail.com

My French Class starts tomorrow, and I forgot to get my book during the week. I put in a reservation on the website but it says (after the fact, of course) that it takes 48 hours to process. Do you typically need your books the first day? And if so, do you think there's a chance they'll have my reserved book anyways?

Someday I'll use my journal or something other than the selling off of possessions I no longer use or would rather be without when I'm facing poverty.

SCCC does accept aspiring students with a GED and not a high school diploma...right?

I always thought all community colleges did, but on its site it says it will accept kids who've finished high school only.

sorry if this is a dumb post.

Guess Who's Coming to Town?
http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2004/08/241616.shtml
author: Laury Kenton

**Friday - August 13 (Time TBD): G.W. Bush will be in Medina for a fundraiser at the home of multi-millionnaire William ("Gary") Reed, Jr.
**Monday - August 16 (7 PM): Condolezza Rice will be in Meany Hall at the University of Washington presenting a World Affairs Council lecture and Q&A session open to the public.

According to the Seattle Times, access to the President of the United States is available to anyone willing to pay his going rate:

$2,500 - for entrance to an event G.W. will attend
$10,000 - for a photograph with G.W.
$25,000 - for a private "reception" and photograph with G.W.

The host of the event, Gary Reed, is a powerful corporate insider, who was the chairman of Simpson Timber for 25 years. He currently sits on the boards of Microsoft, Washington Mutual, Pacaar, Safeco, and The Seattle Times, among others.

Protestors will be gathering at the Medina Elementary School (8001 NE 8th Street, Medina). According to organizers, Reed's estate sits across the street from the school.

As of 8/4/04, the chief of police of the Medina police department is saying that a permit is not necessary for protesters. (Keep in mind, the permit status and even the venue may change.)

STUDENTS AGAINST APATHY: Updated & X-posted
I've contacted Stephen D Hauschka (Biochemistry UW) and arranged a meeting with Campus for Peace and Justice, a University of Washington activist group, to discuss the future of Students Against Apathy in Washington State, and on building a relationship between WSU and UW activist groups sometime next week -- possibly Wedneday Aug 11.

A lot of us are busy studying, so we cannot devote our full time and attention toward making a difference in our communities. If we work together - get organized, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. There is so much to do, right here in our own backyard, and we should - can - do something about it. If any of you are interested in coming along, let me know.

More info on SAA:
SAA is currently recognized by Washington State University as a student club, and thus is currently bound by all the regulations that such a title holds. Our organization would like to remain non-partisan, and openly democratic – no official declarations to either party affiliates, but remain critical of our leaders both locally, nationally, and internationally.

SAA will provide an alternative network and mode of operations for the student body at WSU, and attempt to combat the apathy of the students and citizens of Washington.

SAA aims to work with other activist groups in Washington State University and beyond on like-minded issues; that are democratically set, and universally agreed upon.

SAA seeks to reinvigorate the student body government (ASWSU) at Washington State University, as we believe ASWSU is currently a glorified student entertainment board – ASWSU has a responsibility to look out for its student body’s best interests.

SAA is tired of the pacification promoted by the student newspaper, the Evergreen, and seeks to improve upon the Evergreen’s message.

SAA would like to see greater community involvement across Washington State by both altruistic and socio-political means. We aim to highlight and improve upon the number of informed voting participants, critical thinkers, and activists across the state to empower Washington communities.

- solidarity will provide strength in numbers -
educate - unite - act

BUSH TO COME TO SEATTLE: X-POSTED
According to the the Seattle Times (August 4,2004), Mr. President George W. Bush is coming to Seattle.

Bush is scheduled to visit the area for a $2,500-per-person fund-raiser Aug. 13, Bob Strauss, president of the Eastside Republican Club, announced at a club function last night.

The price rises to $10,000 for a photo opportunity with the president and $25,000 for a private reception and a photo, Strauss told the party faithful.

Strauss later said he was uncertain where the fund-raiser would be held, but that he believed it would be on the Eastside.

The White House and the Bush campaign will not confirm presidential visits this far in advance.

Anyone have more information on this? The when, where, and how of the Republican fundraiser? 'haps we should organize a little peacable assembly and freedom of speech to welcome Curious George.

x-posted: Photography Protest and Workshop - Aug. 1, 1-4, Ballard Locks
This original post by Ian Spiers, a student photographer doing a study at the Ballard Locks...
"One of the Seattle policemen, using his strongest, most authoritative voice, gripping his holstered sidearm, was now demanding to see my ID. I asked what this was about and why I had to show him my ID. "Look, we can do this one of two ways. You show me your ID right now! I'm not kidding!" the cop yelled. Let me be the first to admit to my total loss of composure. Eight grown men, five of which were in uniform and wearing sidearms, now surrounded me. I just had a camera, a tripod, and a bad flashback to Rodney King. You bet I was emotional. How composed would you be?"

...spurned on this reaction by Myk O'Leary:
"In response, I will be trying to organize a photo shoot at the Locks as a means of protest. Anyone else who cares about our rights as Americans to photograph interseting PUBLIC subjects are welcome to join me. If you are a photographer in Seattle, please consider coming."

Though I don't know the above folks, nor am I an avid photographer, I am going to try and make the event. I encourage all of you to do the same.
