It's kinda funny how when someone does something hurtful, everybody else seems waaayyyy nicer in comparison.

I win.

[mood |frustrated]
[music |traditional Finnish songs]

I am exhausted from picking up the pieces of stuff other people broke.

Being an overly-motivated problem solver is turning me into a squeaky wheel, and I'm beginning to fear that too much politics will ultimately be dragged into the things I keep trying to accomplish. All I really want is a safer, more peaceful world, but some days all I see is people acting on their worst vices. Some days I start to get the feeling that they're doing it on purpose, right in front of me. FLAUNTING the fact that they--supposedly--have the FREEDOM to do such untoward things. BECAUSE THEY "CAN" seems to be the going mantra. But just because you CAN... does that really mean you should?? WHY, oh WHY do most people seem to leave this last part out???

Like... the more people there are in the world... and this number is increasing faster than I believe is healthy for the species... the more the repercussions of a negative action seem to reverberate out among the ever-growing many. More of us to share the same space, energy, resources. More of us affected by selfish misdeeds. Can nobody else understand this? Or is this some complete nutso theory that I cooked up out of pure frustration?

Writer's Block: B.Y.O.B. Holidays [Dec. 14th, 2011|07:14 pm]

What is on your holiday wish list this year? One random answer will win a $50 Amazon gift card. [Details here]
I don't make holiday wish lists anymore, because I think the best gifts are not to be bought, but given.

What I really want is a world where my children will not have to live a life fraught with health problems and pollution problems and food shortages, mass chaos, poverty and corruption on all levels. I feel that anything less is unacceptable.

I want people to quit lying to themselves and wake up and smell the roses.

Writer's Block: It's payday! [Nov. 15th, 2011|06:53 pm]

What would you do if you had a million dollars?
Become a full-time advocate for ecological sustainability. Maybe start a business somewhere along those lines. Oh yeah, also, travel and become a total fucking nature photographer!

Before doing any of those things, though, I'd find a way to make that million generate an income stream, because I'm all about financial sustainability, too.

This is where I go the scream into the void because I got the distinct impression nobody hangs out here much anymore.

Good. Ghost towns are my favorite.

Writer's Block: Remembering Steve Jobs [Oct. 12th, 2011|10:01 pm]

Steve Jobs once said, "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life." He inspired a generation to Think Different. How has the legacy of Apple's co-founder influenced your life?
Well suffice it to say I wasn't much of a Mac fan, so I didn't follow Steve Jobs closely, but I do know that he was a hugely innovative person who had worked very long and hard to make his ideas happen, and that is quite admirable. That is an aspiration I can adopt as my own, and I don't say that about a lot of things. In a world filled with cruelty and hardship, we desperately need creative thinkers and people with the drive to make things happen. That's the only way we can make it off the Titanic alive.

Personally, I wasted far too much of my time living someone else's life. I did all sorts of horrible things to try and escape from that bubble, most a dismal failure. But one day I woke up and realized that I would never be successful that way. Mediocre was the best chance I had; my own path was a different one. In fact, allowing myself to think for myself, I faced a lot of resistance and criticism, and still do. But I know now that I can be the person I want to be and lead a more fulfilling, productive life, and that is probably the greatest gift I could give myself.

Writer's Block: Apocalypse now? [May. 21st, 2011|12:51 pm]

It's the beginning of the end, according to Harold Camping. How will you spend what could be your last day on Earth?

Having lunch with an old friend, playing video games, and doing cross-stitch while watching true crime documentaries. I wouldn't have it any other way. :)

I do not, for the record, buy into the "end of the world" in the literal sense. I think at best we could consider it a turning point in time as we know it, perhaps? Maybe millions of humans will wake up and smell the coffee all in unison. Lol!

Wearin' ya thin and drainin' ya dry [May. 9th, 2011|05:08 pm]

Last week I lost my car. To make a long story short, it started running so poorly as to be unsafe to drive. I took it to a local transmission shop, where my worst-case-scenario suspicions were confirmed: tranny is shot. Since putting in a new--or even used--transmission would not have been worth the cost, my best option was to sell the car to California's auto buyback program. It took me an entire day to do this, but now it is done, and I am one hunk-o-junk lighter and a few hundred dollars richer.

Being without a car sucks. Especially if you're trying to find work. On the bright side, I won't be a consumer of gas, and it will give me a chance to do more walking. But it has definitely been a stressor this past week. I don't know much about shopping for a used car, either, and I'll need some help from S. and his mechanic buddies. Also, I can only afford $1,500 at the moment, which won't get me anything terribly special, which is why I have to be careful with this. After I buy the car, I only have a few hundred left to my name, which brings me to my next source of irritation.

U.S. Bank has decided to impose a $6.95/month service fee upon the account formerly known as "free checking". This really couldn't have come at a worse time, and as soon as I was informed of this, upon depositing the check from the sale of my car, I gave the poor unsuspecting bank teller a piece of my mind. Not like in a mean way. No yelling, no personal affronts necessary. I know tellers and other public interface staff don't have much of a hand in this whole thing, and I don't know whose minds I'm really going to change with all my ranting and babbling, but keep quiet about this, I will not.

I told her exactly how that $6.95 monthly fee would impact my situation. It will be pretty ugly, trying to squeeze blood from turnips. This is not affordable for me, and I don't CARE if other banks are doing it, or if the new terms are "easier" or "better" than what the rest of the banks have imposed, none of this helps me in the slightest. You couldn't have picked a worse time for this. Not that there is ever really a convenient time, but it's really quite the low blow to those who can least afford it, WHEN those people can least afford it.

I KNOW that whoever came up with this could have made cuts somewhere else. There's always an expense you can pare down somewhere in the name of staying afloat, especially in such a sizable nationwide corporation. As I stood there groveling, handing the young lady the check from the sale of my most valuable asset, I pictured the people at the top of the banking food chain breathing a sigh of relief that this year's bonuses would be spared. Stepping out of that brand-new car, wearing brand-new shoes, dining on a hot meal containing all four food groups and sleeping comfortably on the best mattress money can buy, while the $6.95 that I could have used to buy all three of today's and tomorrow's meals will be swiftly and systematically yoinked from my account to pay for what has essentially become someone else's inability to make lifestyle adjustments in difficult economic times. Me, I have cut back about as much as a person can cut back. There isn't much left. This is the end. The big guys will have to find someone else to steal from because they've drained this one dry.

If you had to give up swimming, skiing, hiking, or biking for the rest of your life, which would you choose, and why?

Skiing... because I consider the rest to be more important forms of transportation, and besides, I've never skied. :P Ask me again if I move somewhere where it snows enough to matter; I'm sure my answer will have changed!

So... I've been kind of sulking and moping for the past couple weeks. Not as hardcore as some of my other friends have been, but still. It sucks. I felt like I was making real progress in having put my life and my emotional state back together, and then another loss. My counselors have said that even though Katie wasn't a close friend, her death has brought up all kinds of feelings from losing my dad and whatnot. This is probably true. But what resonates even more with me, they pointed out, is that she was someone I identified with in many, many ways, and this was a pretty big deal for me, since I don't often find people I can relate to. They also told me this would feel better in time and all the usual shit people tell the bereaved.

I've lost some motivation to do my normal routine. I feel kind of knocked off my feet, and it's no fun at all. It's sort of like being in another world, in a way, and maybe I should just quit trying to pretend that I'm still living in the 'real' world for now and do what I need to do here until the time comes for it to be over. Western culture really has no good way of integrating the grieving process into the rest of life. The weird part is that trying to do real-life everyday bullshit has lost meaning to me for the time being, but my art-related ADD and artist's block seem to have gone away. Guess I'd better take this and run with it!

Anyway, I promised myself that I'd get up this morning and exercise, and WOW, the difference it made was absolutely AMAZING. It's supposed to rain and possibly snow(!!!) these next few days, so I wanted to get out and run one last time. I totally hate getting up in the morning and trying to do stuff before I've had food or coffee, but it was worth it. I really should do this more. I also need to haul my weary carcass back to the career center and re-register for all the classes I missed last week... blah.
