Students Are Denied Almost $1000 a Year Extra [20 Apr 2011|09:50am]

hanfastolfe
Ever heard of Schedule 6?

If you haven't, read the eligibility criteria - sounds pretty easy, doesn't it? Until you get to the fine print:

You cannot claim the WITB if in 2010:

- you were enrolled as a full-time student at a designated educational institution for more than 13 weeks in the year, unless you had an eligible dependant at the end of the year; or

This benefit has now been in place two years in a row, and I calculated how much my tax refund would be if I claimed this. It leaped from a lousy $53 due to a CPP overpayment to over $1600.

This should be an election issue and every political party should be pressed on this issue until they agree to retroactively allow students to claim this back to the beginning of 2009.

Pass this on to everyone you know! It's unconscionable that in this era of politicians agreeing that post-secondary education is a costly venture, that politicians created a tax benefit which specifically excludes students who attend university for more than one semester out of the year, but who work during the summer to try and save up some money to pay for school.

Useless SFU Website [20 Jan 2011|08:39am]

lmdemasi
The main SFU website (as of 8:10 when I first woke up and still at 8:30 when I checked again) says that "as of 7:50 translink buses aren't running to campus" and suggests checking the road conditions page for more information. The road conditions page at the top says buses are delayed (not cancelled) and further down on the page it says that the buses are running without delays. The bottom of this page says it was last updated at 7:56, which would mean it could be a few minutes more up to date than a report on the main page about "as of 7:50."

What's the point in posting this information if all 3 possible bus statuses are going to be listed over 2 pages and I'm just going to have to check the translink website? Unfortunately there was no contact information as to who updates the pages so that I could contact someone about the uselessness of it.

Fake edit: While I was typing this, the last updated time on the road conditions page was changed to 8:33 without changing any of the wrong information.

WebCT [05 Jan 2011|04:45pm]

bizzeh
I really wish WebCT would change over to the next semester sooner than the day of first class.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to change it sooner?

Editing service [02 Nov 2010|05:37pm]

okanagansun
Hi everyone,

I offer an editing service to both graduate and undergraduate students, and I thought I'd let you know about it. No intention to spam, just to let you know I'm available. Please visit www.writeahead.ca for information about my business, or email me at jessica at writeahead dot ca if you have an inquiry.

Please note: I will NOT write essays for students. I will help you learn to be a better writer, and I will edit for you (unless you're taking a writing or English course), but this is not a writing service. Thanks for understanding!

contemporary arts [11 Aug 2010|04:35pm]

limeracy
hi there.

i attended mount allison university this past year and have applied to simon fraser for the spring term, 2011. i was wondering if there are any music majors who could tell me a few things about the contemporary arts program?
the website is pretty empty in regards to what i'm wondering about, and emails to the university are usually resulting in not that much information or i'm not asking the right questions.

many thanks,
matthew.

UVic Rabbit Management Plan to Cull 90% of Campus Rabbits [29 Jun 2010|11:27pm]

_uzuki_
Sorry, this isnt about SFU but another BC university:

The University of Victoria today (Mon June 28) released their Rabbit Management Plan which calls for the killing of 1200-1400 rabbits on campus, beginning immediately. 200 rabbits will be permitted to live in certain zones.

If you are opposed to this, please sign the petition below and help spread the word:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/147/help-save-the-UVic-rabbits

Also please take this 4 questions survey (less than 30 secs):
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Mz2BfcuL2G6_2bu5DVrZoEpw_3d_3d

i know the large population of rabbits is a problem, but there are more humane low-cost methods (sanctuaries, relocation, adoptions, neuter and release programs for free by vets) than trapping and killing rabbits by cruel methods (poisoning, heart stick, suffocation, snaring, starvation etc).  Please sign and help spread the word.  Thank you for your time!!!

Textbook search? [05 Jun 2010|08:22pm]

cdnangil
Hi all

My current school (University of Saskatchewan) has a textbook search by course utility on the bookstore website, and the University of Calgary had one when I attended there for a term a few years ago.

Does anyone know if SFU Burnaby has anything similar? Alternatively, is there any way to access KIN or PSYC course outlines to obtain the information on current textbook requirements? If so, directions on how to get there would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance :-)

Convocation: SFU > UBC [30 May 2010|11:25pm]

qiushuwen
Having recently been excluded from a close friend's convocation, it's evident that SFU's opening seating/viewing set up beats UBC's limited seating. Even with the wind and fog (though my SFU convocation was last June in the midst of a heat wave...)

Do you agree?

Missing person in Fort St John - Please Cross-Post [14 Apr 2010|03:25pm]

_inthemidst
Hi, I apologize that this is not SFU related, but I live on the other side of the country and am looking for BC livejournals that will reach a lot of members.

My friend Abigail Andrews has been missing for a week. She is 28, pregnant, and was last seen leaving her apartment in Fort St John walking to a friend's house.

She is 6ft tall, and not the type of person you would imagine a mugger striking at random would go after. She is generally very communicative and no one has heard from her or seen her since April 7.

All the RCMP has said is that there may be foul play involved.

I realize that SFU is exactly Fort St John, but I am doing my best to reach out to anyone who may know anyone around there.

Somebody somewhere has to know something.

I am sorry to bother you on this page, but all of her family and friends are worried sick. Please take a minute to look at the news articles, join the facebook group and pass along the information to anyone you may know, espeically in Northern BC or the interior of Alberta. If you can recommend anywhere else to post or would like to cross post, PLEASE do.

Thank you.

200 level liberal arts elective [18 Feb 2010|01:52pm]

qiushuwen
I'm looking to enrol in a light liberal arts course (200 level and up).

Something in these categories: anthropology, art history, Canadian studies, classical studies, cultural studies, English, history, literature, music history, native studies, philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies, sociology, theology, women's studies.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I have a few 100 level prerequisites in a couple of these fields (English, psychology, Asian studies, linguistics...), but other than that it has to be a pre-req free course.

Thanks!

Summer Enrolment Date & Time [14 Feb 2010|11:25pm]

qiushuwen
I got my email on the yesterday... what's everyone's date? And when is the pdf of the schedule of classes going to be released? I've been out of the loop for a year now, so I can't remember!

Mine is April 2nd, 6:30pm.

I've graduated, but re-activated my account to take a liberal elective (which is cheaper than taking it at BCIT, who knew???).

Getting a job on campus [23 Aug 2009|12:24pm]

c0nfluence
Hi guys,

I'm thinking about getting a job on campus since I'll be spending every waking moment up there this semester anyway. I have a feeling the bookstore isn't hiring anymore, might have missed the date? But I'm having difficulty finding infomation on this kind of thing on the website. I hate SFU's website.

Also, how do you get other positions, like research positions? One of my friends got a job roasting marshmallows in a microwave as a 'research' position and it paid very well with very flexible hours. I have no idea how he found it. Anyone have any ideas?

Appreciate the help, thanks!

How to opt out of the Health and Dental Plan... [09 Aug 2009|11:18pm]

antiqueearrings

Ok, so i opted out of the health and dental plan in September last year and that included the Spring semester's opt out. But when are we allowed to opt out of the health and dental for this upcoming Fall semester?

http://ihaveaplan.ca/rte/en/SimonFraserUniversityundergraduatestudentsSFSS_ChangeofCoverage_ChangeofCoveragePeriod

Or has the SFSS screwed me over with some obscure date during the summer semester?

Yet another DE question [08 Aug 2009|11:20pm]
gigaknight
Hey guys,

I'm a prospective SFU student, with 3 years worth of credits from another post-secondary. I'm wondering if it will be possible to complete my degree at SFU with only DE courses?

SFU seems to offer a fairly extensive list of DE courses--well, at least compared to my current school that is! :-)

Thanks again.

Does the bookstore buyback dissection kits (i.e. for BISC 316)?
