Slo-Mo Rewatch: Guardian episode 21, part 2

Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!
Here is the first half of episode 21. On to the second half!
Episode 21 from 23:00:
Summary:
Guo Changcheng tries to help his aunt win at mahjong, but Chu Shuzhi snatches victory for himself. Later, Chu Shuzhi wonders if he did something wrong, and we learn that he has no concept of polite courtesies. *g* They discover Grocer Wang's shop is closed. He was bullied on Reunion Eve, and hasn't been seen for a while.
Dr Cheng offers Da Qing hypnosis as a treatment for his amnesia, and is notified that the family of Bai Suxia's family has retrieved her body. She remembers the Reunion Eve accident, where a pregnant woman and her unborn child both died.
In Snake territory, Zhu Hong uses a guard's feelings for her to get a sneak peek at the restricted area - and then Ya Qing attacks. Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan arrive for the Yashou fleamarket, and meet Ying Chun. They're interrupted by a Crow cawing, and they all rush to the site, where Ya Qing has Zhu Hong hostage. She's here to settle the score for Ying Chun and Fourth Uncle detaining her while the SID captured Zhu Jiu.

Fourth Uncle rushes at Ya Qing, but she knocks him back. Shen Wei knocks Ya Qing back in turn, pulling Zhu Hong to freedom with black energy even as he rushes at Ya Qing. He threatens her with his dao, and his anger is only derailed by Zhao Yunlan calling "Xiao-Wei!" Zhao Yunlan talks to Ya Qing to de-escalate the situation. Fourth Uncle proposes electing a Yashou High Chief in three months, and Ya Qing agrees, then flies off. Zhao Yunlan concludes that's why he was invited to the Yashou Fleamarket in the first place: Fourth Uncle wanted his help in dealing with Ya Qing. Fourth Uncle gives Zhu Hong the key to the restricted area for safekeeping, telling her it will only work if you can get it to sprout first.
At the SID, Wang Zheng and Sang Zan have a romantic evening with dancing in the petal-strewn library. Later, Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei arrive at the SID, and everyone greets Shen Wei as the Envoy. Shen Wei apologises to Chu Shuzhi for not telling him in advance.
Guo Changcheng and Cong Bo both tell the SID about a miracle doctor who can cure Zhao Yunlan's eyes, and they go check him out. But the doctor wants unquestioning deference and reacts badly to any questions, so Zhao Yunlan decides to leave. Shen Wei spots Professor Ouyang arriving, and Da Qing spies on Professor Ouyang and the doctor. Afterwards, Shen Wei talks to Professor Ouyang, and he tries to recruit Shen Wei again. He also vouches for the doctor's abilities.
Quote:
Ying Chun: "Everyone says the Lord Guardian is a glib-tongued hunk. You don't disappoint."
Detail(s):
When the SID greets Shen Wei as "Hei Pao-daren", the only one who doesn't join in is Chu Shuzhi. ♥ ♥ ♥
(Xiao-Guo is absent, though. Chu Shuzhi might not have let him join in either! *g*)
Questions:
Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines (other than "Xiao-Wei")? What do Xiao-Guo's aunt and uncle really think about Chu Shuzhi? Who talked to Ying Chun about Zhao Yunlan? Have the Snakes really been guarding the restricted area for 10,000 years without ever knowing what's inside? Does Ya Qing kill the Snake guard (Jia-ge), or just knock him out? What is Ya Qing's plan here? Would Shen Wei have killed Ya Qing? What is going on in his head when Zhao Yunlan calls him "Xiao-Wei"? What does Zhao Yunlan make of his reaction? Does Fourth Uncle have any expectations who will become High Chief? How does Chu Shuzhi feel about the Envoy apologising to him? Does Professor Ouyang realise the miracle doctor's healing ability is a Dixing power? Any thoughts about parallels with other parts of the drama? Or about how any of this connects with the novel?
(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)
Here is our schedule for the current batch of episodes - please do sign up to host a post if you can!

How does Chu Shuzhi feel about the Envoy apologising to him?
Oh, IMO Chu Shuzhi for sure thinks that the Envoy doesn’t need to apologize to him at all. But he would never say it out loud. Or maybe in a way he says exactly that, just in other words, when he says “Whatever you do I support you unconditionally”.
Xiao-Guo is absent, though. Chu Shuzhi might not have let him join in either! *g*
Oh wow, I admit that I never noticed that. If someone asked me I would swear that Changcheng is there, too. Heh... Maybe it’s time for a re-watch. But I have so many new dramas started that I don’t know when I could find the time. 😊

Yes, agreed! I totally think that's what he means. And it must be so weird to be apologised to, when he's put the Envoy on such a pedestal, and when he's still wrapping his head around Professor Shen being the same person!
Maybe it’s time for a re-watch. But I have so many new dramas started that I don’t know when I could find the time. 😊
It's always time for a rewatch! *g*
(You could join in on this one, half an episode per week is pretty doable! Yeah, we're already half-way through, but still! Plenty left to go!)

Ahhhh, yesssss! And I think, even as Chu Shuzhi does see the need for the apology, he must treasure the fact that the Envoy respects him enough to apologise and treat him as an equal. <3 <3 <3
(*waves* Hi, you!! So lovely to have you drop in!! <3 <3 <3)

Oh, absolutely. I think so, too. For Chu Shuzhi this will be one of his most treasured memories. :)
And I just wanted to say that I always read those slow-mo rewatch discussions. I don't always have something to say, but the discussions are very interesting, and sometimes I even learn new things. Heh... So, thank you to you and trobadora for making those posts. ♥

Oh cool -- that's great to hear. Thanks, you! <3

Da Qing tells Dr Cheng he only looks young, but isn't actually, and I always wonder if she thinks it's perhaps another Zu Ma situation.
I love the way the plot-important stuff for the Merit Brush arc is sprinkled in here, Dr Cheng and the nurse talking about Bai Suxia's death, Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng hearing about Wang Xiangyang being bullied and disappearing.
The timeline is seriously wonky here. Reunion Eve, which is when Bai Suxia died and Wang Xiangyang was bullied, should have been the night before, aka the night Zhao Yunlan was blinded, but it sounds as if Wang Xiangyang was missing for more than a day, and just several things about the entire stretch between the Zhu Jiu capture and don't add up. They all flow into each other with no gap, but more time seems to be passing ... (I can usually ignore these inconsistencies just fine, but it can drive me up the wall when I'm trying to construct a timeline for a fic. *g*)
Chu Shuzhi's 什么是客套? "What are 'courtesies'?" always makes me laugh.
In the previous half-episode Fourth Uncle calls Zhu Hong out on only visiting because she's looking for a cure for Zhao Yunlan's eyes, and she's proving him right here! She even uses a Snake boy's feelings for her so she can sneak into the restricted area, in the faint hope there might be something relevant there.
Ya Qing uses the guard's distraction to knock him down, then tells Zhu Hong off for trying to go where she doesn't belong, and Zhu Hong attacks her, furious - I expect not just over Jia-ge getting attacked, but just as much because Ya Qing is the one who brought them to Ye Zun, and is therefore partly responsible for Zhao Yunlan's blindness.
I love that Zhao Yunlan has acquired a snazzy cane!
The announcement that sounds as Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei walk through the park involves Kunlun, and Gonggong and the dragon and the pillars of heaven - novel backstory stuff that (apart from Kunlun's identity) has no direct equivalent in the drama. (Well, maybe the meteor strike is the equivalent of toppling Mount Buzhou?) So when Zhao Yunlan asks whether Shen Wei knew these people in the past and Shen Wei comes back with, "I'm not very clear about matters from the past," I'm not really sure how to take it. Is all of this supposed to refer to something from YOHE, and Shen Wei is being secretive? Or is it all later mythologising that happened during Shen Wei's dirt nap, and Shen Wei actually really isn't clear on any of this?
The meeting with Ying Chun is so cute! He turns up the charm, and she's clearly entertained by it.
Love the tiny nod Shen Wei gives when Zhao Yunlan says the sunglasses are for gaining sympathy! *g*
The way Shen Wei just drags Zhao Yunlan behind him when he's rushing towards Ya Qing's cawing! Hee!
And I love the way Ya Qing's hand is so claw-like on Zhu Hong's throat, excellent visual! I couldn't resist using it as this post's screencap. (Also, Ya Qing just looks excellent here, but then, she always does.) She says she's back to settle the score as she promised, and I wonder what exactly her plan is. I used to think her taking Zhu Hong hostage was just because the opportunity presented itself, but thinking about it again, I actually think she did it on purpose, threatening her to show Fourth Uncle how vulnerable he is if he gets in her way again.
Ya Qing and Ying Chun clearly care about each other, but don't understand each other at all at this point.
The action sequence is such fun! Fourth Uncle rushing Ya Qing, Ya Qing repelling him with black energy, and then Shen Wei arriving (dragging Zhao Yunlan behind!), pushing Ya Qing with black energy and yanking Zhu Hong towards Zhao Yunlan even as he rushes at Ya Qing!
I'm never certain what exactly Shen Wei was going to do with Ya Qing once had her under his dao, but there were really no good options there. She's not under his jurisdiction, but she's allied with Dixing traitors, enemies of Haixing, so fighting her is obviously legitimate. But killing the leader of a Yashou tribe would definitely have consequences, and then again, letting her go doesn't help anything either, since she'll just keep working against them ...
At any rate, despite how furious Shen Wei is about all of this, "Xiao-Wei!" cuts through it instantly, derailing his anger and leaving him blue-screening. (I'm still so sad that we didn't get a Xiao-Wei scene in YOHE for this to call back to!)
And then Zhao Yunlan - who has to feel pretty helpless stumbling and being yanked around, but who's not letting that stop him - does what he always does: he tries to de-escalate things. Of course he didn't see Ya Qing's hand on Zhu Hong's throat, but it really is his first strategy, inserting himself into a conflict and trying to calm things down, even when he doesn't quite understand the stakes. (Like with the Envoy shouting at the Regent!) And luckily it works here, because Shen Wei's fury means Ya Qing can't afford escalation at this point. I'm not sure if she really hears what he's saying about Ye Zun not genuinely helping her - does she already have doubts at this point?
Fourth Uncle suggests electing a Yashou High Chief, and Ya Qing agrees - of course she's hoping it'll be her, but I wonder if he also thinks it'll be him? At any rate, Zhao Yunlan calls out Fourth Uncle on only inviting him because he wanted his help - he phrases its as 让兄弟帮你挡一挡灾, roughly "let your buddy help you ward off disaster", hee! And Fourth Uncle doesn't deny it.
Fourth Uncle couldn't have known Ya Qing would be there (though no doubt he expected her to turn up soon), so I'm not sure what his actual plan was. But maybe he was originally just going to discuss the issue with Zhao Yunlan? I'm not sure.
I'm also not sure what's up with the Fleamarket, which Fourth Uncle used as an excuse to invite Zhao Yunlan. Is it actually happening? It would be a good opening gesture, offering the potential of finding a cure, if he wants something from Zhao Yunlan! But on the other hand, after this, Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei seem to just leave, and there's no mention at all of potentially finding a cure from anyone else who might turn up. So they seem to be treating it as merely a ruse to lure Zhao Yunlan into Snake territory? And the Fleamarket isn't actually happening at all? Idk, I always feel like I'm missing something here.
Sacred wood lore! It's a key that only works if you first make it sprout! Ma Gui really is a mad scientist, that sounds like something Lin Jing would have thought of. *g* And I love that Fourth Uncle trusts Zhu Hong with it.
About Jia-ge (as Zhu Hong calls him) or A-Jia (as Fourth Uncle says): we see Ya Qing knock him down, and then don't see him again. I know some of us believe she killed him, but it's ambiguous on screen, and this time, I paid special attention to the way Fourth Uncle talks about him afterwards. He tells her A-Jia genuinely likes her - that doesn't sound to me like it's meant to be past tense, more like he's still trying to set them up. And calling Zhu Hong a crybaby when she says she let Jia-ge down also seems weird if the guy was actually just murdered. So based on this, I think he did survive and was only knocked out.
Wang Zheng and Sang Zan and their romance once again serve to make sure everyone knows the end credit song is explicitly romantic. *g*
And then we get everyone greeting Shen Wei as the Envoy! Such a delightful scene.
When Shen Wei says to act the same as before, Zhao Yunlan repeats it in what always seems to me a slightly mocking tone - possibly pondering on (not) being treated the same as before when something changes. Such as losing your eyesight. *g*
My favourite part is 100% Shen Wei going straight to Chu Shuzhi (who didn't participate in the greeting) and apologising for not telling him in advance. And I love Chu Shuzhi's declaration of loyalty.
I wonder if Shen Wei was going to tell him - I mean, after Zhu Hong knew, the cat essentially was out of the bag. Maybe it would have happened during the Reunion Festival feast at the SID, if they hadn't been interrupted. (Afterwards, of course he was distracted by Zhao Yunlan's blindness.)
Da Qing bets ten packs of anchovies that the miracle doctor is a swindler! Hee! (I bet he never pays up. *g*)
Another great little detail: Cong Bo calling Lin Jing, who he worked closely with, rather than Zhao Yunlan himself, or the SID office.
Shen Wei is willing to try anything at this point, but also, he knows very well that healing powers do exist, so it's definitely worth checking things out.
I still can't stand Feng Qubing. Calling Zhao Yunlan's blindness a minor problem and then getting offended when Da Qing is obviously WTF?! about that? Threatening them with not accepting patients today? Refusing any and all questions, and bristling at anything that isn't unquestioning adulation? And then he's surprised when Zhao Yunlan decides to just leave! Has he only been dealing with desperate people until now, so no one walked out on him before?!
(He has reasons to be secretive, but he has no reasons to be an arrogant jerk! And his conversation with Professor Ouyang makes it sound like he's more concerned with wiping out his previous reputation as a quack than with helping people.)
I love the mini-head jerk Shen Wei gives to Da Qing, prompting him to spy on the doctor's next visitor, Professor Ouyang.
Speaking of, and considering Feng Qubing's (lack of) bedside manner - did Professor Ouyang not ask any questions?! What does he think is happening?! Shouldn't he realise this is related to his research, and be very interested in learning more?!
The conversation between Shen Wei and Professor Ouyang is so interesting. Professor Ouyang clearly feels slighted that Shen Wei decided to join the "inferior" SID instead of the Haixing lab! And he tries to recruit him again, after giving up pretty quickly in episode 1. (But then, since that time they've had some setbacks and a lot of pressure from above, as well as Professor Zhou who can't shut up about Shen Wei, so ... *g*)
And we get a hint about the direction of Professor Ouyang's research: "Chief Zhao is an ordinary person. Getting injured is normal. Unless our experiment ..." Shen Wei should pick up on that, right?

Oh, that's a thought! Something that only resonates on a re-watch...
I love the way the plot-important stuff for the Merit Brush arc is sprinkled in here, Dr Cheng and the nurse talking about Bai Suxia's death, Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng hearing about Wang Xiangyang being bullied and disappearing.
Yes, there's some wonderful set-up. For later on, too: the forbidden area, and so on. It's beautifully constructed.
Chu Shuzhi's 什么是客套? "What are 'courtesies'?" always makes me laugh.
It sounds like such a genuine question. :D
Yes! Though at the same time, Fourth Uncle uses her to lure Zhao Yunlan to the market to get involved in internal Yashou politics, right?
Ya Qing uses the guard's distraction to knock him down, then tells Zhu Hong off for trying to go where she doesn't belong, and Zhu Hong attacks her, furious - I expect not just over Jia-ge getting attacked, but just as much because Ya Qing is the one who brought them to Ye Zun, and is therefore partly responsible for Zhao Yunlan's blindness.
Yes, I think that's part of Shen Wei's fury, too. Zhu Hong and Shen Wei are both smarting from Zhao Yunlan having been injured -- and even worse, it happening on their watch!
I love that Zhao Yunlan has acquired a snazzy cane!
Hee, yes!
So when Zhao Yunlan asks whether Shen Wei knew these people in the past and Shen Wei comes back with, "I'm not very clear about matters from the past," I'm not really sure how to take it. Is all of this supposed to refer to something from YOHE, and Shen Wei is being secretive? Or is it all later mythologising that happened during Shen Wei's dirt nap, and Shen Wei actually really isn't clear on any of this?
Yeah, I was wondering about that, too.
Love the tiny nod Shen Wei gives when Zhao Yunlan says the sunglasses are for gaining sympathy! *g*
LOL, I always read that as him confirming (in response to her silent question) that Zhao Yunlan is in fact blind, rather than agreeing with his statement.
The way Shen Wei just drags Zhao Yunlan behind him when he's rushing towards Ya Qing's cawing! Hee!
Hee! Well, he can't just leave him there -- who knows what trouble he'd get into. *g*
I wonder what exactly her plan is. I used to think her taking Zhu Hong hostage was just because the opportunity presented itself, but thinking about it again, I actually think she did it on purpose, threatening her to show Fourth Uncle how vulnerable he is if he gets in her way again.
Oh yes, that's a great point. So, do you think she never intended to hurt her?
(I'm still so sad that we didn't get a Xiao-Wei scene in YOHE for this to call back to!)
We were robbed!!
Fourth Uncle suggests electing a Yashou High Chief, and Ya Qing agrees - of course she's hoping it'll be her, but I wonder if he also thinks it'll be him?
I don't know that he's actually that ambitious? He doesn't really come forward at the "election", does he?
Fourth Uncle couldn't have known Ya Qing would be there (though no doubt he expected her to turn up soon), so I'm not sure what his actual plan was. But maybe he was originally just going to discuss the issue with Zhao Yunlan? I'm not sure.
Make a covert alliance? I wonder if he was expecting the SID Chief to bring the Envoy along, too.
Me too! If there isn't a Fleamarket at all, then what was with the mythological announcement?
So based on this, I think he did survive and was only knocked out.
Ha, I came to the opposite conclusion, based on his not appearing again.
When Shen Wei says to act the same as before, Zhao Yunlan repeats it in what always seems to me a slightly mocking tone - possibly pondering on (not) being treated the same as before when something changes. Such as losing your eyesight. *g*
Ooh, I like that reading!
I think Shen Wei is usually resistant to telling people unless trapped into it (or unless he needs to use his Envoy powers/status in the line of duty). Admittedly, he did experiment with showing his Envoy appearance to Ye Huo, but maybe it's different when it's someone he doesn't know, who he doesn't want to have an ongoing relationship with. It must suck, knowing how awed CSZ and everyone are by the Envoy, to feel like the fragile co-worker relationship he's been developing with them all might ice over into formality.
Da Qing bets ten packs of anchovies that the miracle doctor is a swindler! Hee! (I bet he never pays up. *g*)
Haha. Never!
I love the mini-head jerk Shen Wei gives to Da Qing, prompting him to spy on the doctor's next visitor, Professor Ouyang.
It's a lovely moment of silent communication, but it does rather lead into DQ spying again later on and scuppering their cure...
Speaking of, and considering Feng Qubing's (lack of) bedside manner - did Professor Ouyang not ask any questions?! What does he think is happening?! Shouldn't he realise this is related to his research, and be very interested in learning more?!
I thought his and Professor Ouyang's talk was quite friendly and almost collegial.
And we get a hint about the direction of Professor Ouyang's research: "Chief Zhao is an ordinary person. Getting injured is normal. Unless our experiment ..." Shen Wei should pick up on that, right?
Yes, definitely. He just has other things on his mind right now, but presumably that's when he makes a mental note to meet up with Zhao Xinci and make formal enquiries?
no subject
Yes! I really like that.
Though at the same time, Fourth Uncle uses her to lure Zhao Yunlan to the market to get involved in internal Yashou politics, right?
Yeah, he's calling her out on having ulterior motives while having ulterior motives himself. Like uncle, like niece? *g*
(And they both do mean well, it's not like any of that is malicious or anything. Actually, I really like that they have this kind of practicality in common!)
Yes, I think that's part of Shen Wei's fury, too. Zhu Hong and Shen Wei are both smarting from Zhao Yunlan having been injured -- and even worse, it happening on their watch!
That's very true, agreed. For Zhu Hong, she had to be there during the entire thing, trying to help but unable to - she couldn't even support ZYL fully, because the Sundial pushed her away too! And they knew Ya Qing was dangerous; she and Shen Wei even worked together to get her out of the way for Zhu Jiu's capture. But they failed to prevent her next move, which was to bring ZYL to Ye Zun ...
Yeah, I was wondering about that, too.
Right? Maybe it's just an easter egg for the novel fans, and we shouldn't read too much into it, but I keep wondering how it might relate to YOHE ...
LOL, I always read that as him confirming (in response to her silent question) that Zhao Yunlan is in fact blind, rather than agreeing with his statement.
Oh, yeah, I don't think he's literally confirming the sympathy-gaining statement! I think it's mostly a "yeah, he really is like that", but also, as you say, confirming the blindness is real.
Oh yes, that's a great point. So, do you think she never intended to hurt her?
I think she wanted to get Fourth Uncle out of her way, and actually harming Zhu Hong wouldn't have done that; it'd have turned him more firmly against her. So yeah, IMO it was a threat display that didn't work out well for her because Fourth Uncle came prepared with a Guardian and an Envoy. *g*
We were robbed!!
ROBBED.
I don't know that he's actually that ambitious? He doesn't really come forward at the "election", does he?
I don't think he's ambitious and I don't think he wants actual power, but at this point he probably still thinks a High Chief could order everything back to the status quo, and that would be that. By the time the election actually comes round, the situation has changed a lot.
Make a covert alliance? I wonder if he was expecting the SID Chief to bring the Envoy along, too.
Yeah, he does know by this point that Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan are working closely together, and Zhu Hong probably complained about them being glued together too. *g* So he could very reasonably expecct both of them to show up!
Oooh, now I want an AU where Ya Qing doesn't turn up right at that point and they get to talk! I'd love to see a take on Fourth Uncle's thoughts at this point in time, because I really don't think he's ready to commit to fighting at all, and yet. So what compromises is he willing to make at this point?
If there isn't a Fleamarket at all, then what was with the mythological announcement?
Another very good question!
Ha, I came to the opposite conclusion, based on his not appearing again.
But then what do you make of the way Fourth Uncle and Zhu Hong talk about him? They really don't act as if they're talking about someone who literally just died.
It must suck, knowing how awed CSZ and everyone are by the Envoy, to feel like the fragile co-worker relationship he's been developing with them all might ice over into formality.
Yeah, that's a good point! But I think despite Shen Wei's reticence about his secrets, he was aware that once Zhu Hong knew there was no stuffing that cat back into the bag. And I don't think he's the "stick your head in the sand" type. Idk, planning to tell Chu Shuzhi would make sense to me.
It's a lovely moment of silent communication, but it does rather lead into DQ spying again later on and scuppering their cure...
Eh, I maintain DQ's mistake was not spying in cat form the second time. The first time he got it right! *g*
Yes, it was! Completely agreed. But I'm wondering how they got there. Professor Ouyang tells Shen Wei that Feng Qubing cured his knees, and I'm wondering how Professor Ouyang, who's a) a scientist, b) deep into super-powers research, and c) feeling pressure from above, got through that without saying or asking anything that offended Feng Qubing, given that even DQ's mild reaction over Feng Qubing calling ZYL's blindness a small issue sets him off so much!
He just has other things on his mind right now, but presumably that's when he makes a mental note to meet up with Zhao Xinci and make formal enquiries?
Oh, yeah. Good point!
no subject
Hee! He's brought her up to be strategic and slippery. ;-)
Yes! Oh, in a way, having Ya Qing be Yashou probably makes Zhu Hong feel irrationally responsible, in a similar way to Shen Wei feeling responsible for Ye Zun...
Re Fourth Uncle, I don't feel like I really know him well enough to predict how he'd react if Ya Qing had killed Zhu Hong, especially if Fourth Uncle hadn't come prepared. He'd definitely have reacted somehow, but idk if that would have been retreat or attack. I could go either way on that, given how wedded he is to keeping his tribe out of the fight, and Ya Qing having such powerful backing (not that I think Ye Zun would go to bat for the Crows, but Fourth Uncle doesn't know that).
Yes, exactly. I don't think he's like Wang Xiangyang; and it would have been interesting to get more alternative (more mature) reactions to grief in the show. Not worth losing Zhu Hong for, though, of course!
But then what do you make of the way Fourth Uncle and Zhu Hong talk about him? They really don't act as if they're talking about someone who literally just died.
I think they're both still reeling from what just happened/Zhu Hong's brush with death, and all the other drama, and that kind of pushes the Jia-ge tragedy aside a bit, and Fourth Uncle doesn't want to give Zhu Hong too hard a time, given everything. (And in Doylist terms, I think the show wants to show Ya Qing as ruthless and "drowned in darkness", but without dwelling too much on the costs of her actions because it needs to be reasonable to redeem her -- and have everyone else work with her -- at the end.)
Speaking of, and considering Feng Qubing's (lack of) bedside manner - did Professor Ouyang not ask any questions?! What does he think is happening?! Shouldn't he realise this is related to his research, and be very interested in learning more?!
I know! That is very weird. Even aside from the bedside manner thing, which... I suspect might have been different for a single, seemingly harmless, amiable elderly gentlemen, versus a whole cadre of inquisitive, pushy weirdos demanding answers, plus Shen Wei appearing both very formal in manner and dress and very protective of ZYL. I suspect all of that inadvertently pushed FQB's "trying to make a name for himself while still somehow flying under the official radar, gah?!??" buttons, and made him that much more difficult and weird in response. (He has other thank-you banners in his clinic, too, so it's not just Ouyang he gets on with.)
no subject
Not as closely - it's Ying Chun who's more likely to feel that way about Ya Qing, but yeah. Same way as Shen Wei feels responsible for Dixingren in general.
Yes, exactly. I don't think he's like Wang Xiangyang; and it would have been interesting to get more alternative (more mature) reactions to grief in the show. Not worth losing Zhu Hong for, though, of course!
Definitely not worth losing Zhu Hong! But it's absolutely fascinating to think about all the different ways things could have gone at this point. Agreed that he's no Wang Xiangyang, and a different take on grief would have been very good to include, even just as a counterexample!
I think they're both still reeling from what just happened/Zhu Hong's brush with death, and all the other drama, and that kind of pushes the Jia-ge tragedy aside a bit, and Fourth Uncle doesn't want to give Zhu Hong too hard a time, given everything.
Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me at all, so let's stop here since we're not going to agree. :)

Yeah, I can see how the entire SID mob might push his buttons more! And I'm not surprised about the thank-you banners or people in general not asking questions, it's just Professor Ouyang who surprises me since he's not just someone with a scientific mindset, but actively researching related topics. *g*

Yes -- that is a puzzler. I wonder why the show used him in particular here, rather than a different character. Maybe because he's a scientist, so Shen Wei would trust his judgement or FQB?
no subject
one aspect, I guess. And from a narrative arc point of view it makes sense that Shen Wei meets Professor Ouyang again and we're reminded of that connection, and Shen Wei gets a reminder about Professor Ouyang's research. But it doesn't quite fit in other respects ...

Chu Shuzhi and Changcheng in the street -- more awwww! Changcheng is so cute, feeling happy to have had CSZ at his family gathering and knowing CSZ received his uncle's approval (despite the gaffe). And CSZ knows he messed up but doesn't understand how. *smishes them wholeheartedly* (I feel like CSZ's confusion about manners reinforces that the doll thing wasn't a test. Also, where is the doll now?? Did he send it on ahead, or shrink it to put it into his pocket, or...?)
Jia-ge on sentry duty, so bored, and so susceptible to Zhu Hong's coaxing. (Wow, she must have been a terror when she lived in the village, everyone wrapped around her finger.) Anyway, Jia-ge is a sweetie, and I think YQ kills him or else we'd see him again (and I can never quite forgive her for doing it, either). (I included him in my ZH time travel fic.) Zhu Hong is furious/guilty and outmatched.
Weilan in the park!! ♥!! Oh, hey, and the Kunlun welcome from the novel! Shen Wei is completely stone-faced as he listens. Is he outright lying about not knowing the past, or is he starting to doubt the assumptions he'd made about ZYL time travelling, thinking that the blindness has messed up the timeline? (I think it's the former.)
Has Shen Wei been to previous flea markets? He says, "But the flea market is organized by the three great tribes of the Yashou, in turns. It happens every three years. Sometimes, it is really lively and crowded. Sometimes, it is not." Which sounds like first-hand knowledge to me. I wonder if he bought things before, or just made friends and asked if anyone had seen Kunlun.
LOL at Shen Wei letting ZYL walk off, and Ying Chun catching him when he (inevitably) stumbles. ♥ I guess SW was cool with it because there's grass everywhere for ZYL to fall on. *g*
Omg, who on earth has been gossiping thirstily about ZYL to Ying Chun?? Actually, it's probably her interpretation of Fourth Uncle's worries about Zhu Hong's crush, isn't it? Ha.
Stand-off with Ya Qing. Shen Wei goes straight into battle mode. (I wrote a little fic from ZH's pov.)
Ohh, I wonder if SW was starting to have doubts about the timeline, and ZYL calling him "Xiao Wei" proved his doubts were wrong? It's definitely thrown him back to YOHE, anyway, to his younger self, and All Those Feelings. And this time when ZYL stumbles, it's SW who catches him. <3 <3 <3
I looooove ZYL being capable and leaderly, not letting his change of circumstances hold him back. <3 <3 <3 Also love his complete failure to hold a grudge against Ya Qing -- she led him to Ye Zun and is still on YZ's side, but ZYL is talking pure politics, trying to reason with her. LOVE!!
Haha, Zhu Hong is the chosen one. Fourth Uncle gives her the Sacred Wood for safe keeping. Does she realise he also used her to lure ZYL into the middle of their intra-Yashou conflict?
Awwwww, Wang Zheng and Sang Zan dancing. <3 <3 <3
The SID greet the Envoy! Absolutely classic, best best best Shen Wei & CSZ moment, with both of them confirming their on-going relationship right there in front of everyone!!! <3 <3 <3
Changcheng arrives with the Miracle Doctor flyer, full of hope, aww.
I've written a lot of apologia for Dr Feng before, and I don't really want to get into arguing about it again (but if anyone else has a sympathetic/compassionate take on him too, I'd love to know).
Ha, Professor Ouyang is wearing sunglasses. That has to be deliberate, right? He's also been struck blind, but ethically rather than literally. ;-p And he nearly spills the beans about the serum.

Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode?
ZYL shoving his way into the Ya Qing situation and doing politics, regardless of his blindness. (Is this when Ya Qing realises what has happened to him? She didn't stick around in the park to see if he was still alive. How does she feel about a) his blindness, and b) the fact that he's apparently not holding a grudge?) I just adore his indomitability.
Runner up is Changcheng's happy little smile to himself on the way back from dinner with the family. <3
Any favourite lines (other than "Xiao-Wei")?
Ha, "Xiao-Wei" doesn't really do it for me, particularly. I'm not fond of pet names -- and I think "Hei-laoge" is more affectionate/familiar in many ways.
I didn't note down any lines this time, except one in Chinese for the grammar/syntax: 等晚上回来一起再讨论一下.
What do Xiao-Guo's aunt and uncle really think about Chu Shuzhi?
I think they think his foreign manners are a bit rough around the edges, but he's very WYSIWYG (which is reassuring!) and having such a fierce protector for Changcheng is ultimately a good thing, given the kind of work they do.
Who talked to Ying Chun about Zhao Yunlan?
Fourth Uncle, complaining about Zhu Hong's having decamped to the city all for a crush on the SID chief.
Have the Snakes really been guarding the restricted area for 10,000 years without ever knowing what's inside?
I'm sure there've been rumours and theories. Maybe Jia-ge is a sceptic, and that's why he says they don't know.
Does Ya Qing kill the Snake guard (Jia-ge), or just knock him out?
Answered in my comment.
Would Shen Wei have killed Ya Qing?
I think he might have cut her down without actually killing her, like he did to Zhu Jiu. I mean, if she's openly attacking (and conspiring in attacking) members of the SID, that's quite an escalation, and Shen Wei can't be everywhere at once to protect people.
What does Zhao Yunlan make of his reaction?
So many possibilities! Idk if he thinks SW might be offended (doubtful), or if it's one of SW's peculiar, unexplained responses to things, or something more mundane (or sexual). *g*
Does Fourth Uncle have any expectations who will become High Chief?
I think he hopes it will be Zhu Hong, his ambitious little niece, and that the position will bring her back to the forest/tribe.
How does Chu Shuzhi feel about the Envoy apologising to him?
I think he deeply appreciates the courtesy, and respects the Envoy even more for his graciousness in extending the consideration.
Does Professor Ouyang realise the miracle doctor's healing ability is a Dixing power?
I'm sure he suspects. Maybe he has exceptionalist double standards for Dixingren who seem harmless/helpful. ;-p
Any thoughts about parallels with other parts of the drama? Or about how any of this connects with the novel?
Ooh, is Ya Qing holding Zhu Hong against the tree a foreshadowing of the finale with Zhao Yunlan tied to the pillar, rope around his neck instead of a Crow talon? Is the restricted area a metaphor for Shen Wei's secrets about YOHE -- making Ya Qing killing Jia-ge a parallel for Wang Zheng and Sang Zan's death at Ye Zun's hands, as Zhu Hong/Zhao Yunlan move to learn the truth?
It's also interesting to consider the YQ standoff in relation to the later standoff where she switches sides. A lot of the same people are present, but here, even if she accepts on some level the wisdom of ZYL's political counsel, she's not ready to switch sides yet.

Very good question! I always figured she must know already - that her Crows are keeping an eye on the SID and she learned it that way, but it would be so fascinating if she learned it right there in that moment!
Ha, "Xiao-Wei" doesn't really do it for me, particularly. I'm not fond of pet names -- and I think "Hei-laoge" is more affectionate/familiar in many ways.
Oh, no, I'm 10,000% more for Hei-laoge myself, I love that one and Xiao-Wei by itself does nothing for me. I only like it in this very specific context, where it hits Shen Wei so hard out of nowhere - a moment that can't be replicated because it wouldn't have that impact again. (I'm also not fond of it getting used in fic as a generic endearment in part for that reason!)
I think they think his foreign manners are a bit rough around the edges, but he's very WYSIWYG (which is reassuring!) and having such a fierce protector for Changcheng is ultimately a good thing, given the kind of work they do.
Oh yes, the WYSIWYG is an excellent point. I hadn't thought of it in those terms, but it's very true and it absolutely would be reassuring! Awww.
I think he might have cut her down without actually killing her, like he did to Zhu Jiu. I mean, if she's openly attacking (and conspiring in attacking) members of the SID, that's quite an escalation, and Shen Wei can't be everywhere at once to protect people.
Yeah, that makes sense to me!
So many possibilities! Idk if he thinks SW might be offended (doubtful), or if it's one of SW's peculiar, unexplained responses to things, or something more mundane (or sexual). *g*
Ha! It probably does go into his internal filing system right next to things like "we've always been friends". *g*
I think he hopes it will be Zhu Hong, his ambitious little niece, and that the position will bring her back to the forest/tribe.
Wow, I can't see that at all. I don't think he takes her nearly seriously enough for that, she's still his little niece he needs to protect and keep out of trouble, even if he's starting to make first steps with entrusting the Sacred Wood to her. And his reaction when ZYL pushes Zhu Hong forward at the actual election doesn't look like it's something he's ever considered before ...
I'm sure he suspects. Maybe he has exceptionalist double standards for Dixingren who seem harmless/helpful. ;-p
LOL! Or maybe he's so focused on weaponising powers that harmless-seeming powers just hold no interest for him? Idk, I can't really make sense of him there.
Ooh, is Ya Qing holding Zhu Hong against the tree a foreshadowing of the finale with Zhao Yunlan tied to the pillar, rope around his neck instead of a Crow talon?
Huh, maybe? There doesn't seem to be much by the way of actual parallel there, beyond being restrained. The rope around Zhao Yunlan's neck seems more related to the rope strangling Ge Lan ...
It's also interesting to consider the YQ standoff in relation to the later standoff where she switches sides.
Yes, good point! I think those scenes make for a great contrast and show off her character development, yeah. She's really not there yet, at all!
no subject
Right? Would she feel triumphant or some measure of guilt? Either way, I'm sure having Shen Wei's blade at her throat overrode it. ;-p
*nodnod* That makes sense.
Ha! It probably does go into his internal filing system right next to things like "we've always been friends". *g*
Hee! That filing system is just bristling with mysteries!! :D
Huh, maybe? There doesn't seem to be much by the way of actual parallel there, beyond being restrained. The rope around Zhao Yunlan's neck seems more related to the rope strangling Ge Lan ...
Ha, whereas I don't see that, myself. That was part of a public execution, none of the "using one person partly as a proxy to provoke/punish another" that's going on with Ya Qing here and Ye Zun at the end. (The villagers really thought Ge Lan was the problem, didn't they?) What are the parallels you see with that?
no subject
They did, but that's not the part I meant. Or, well, there's a bit of that - Ge Lan's execution is mainly not about her, but about Sang Zan (or about who they think he is without her), just like Ye Zun going after Zhao Yunlan is at heart about Shen Wei. But what I was actually thinking about was Sang Zan having to watch them kill Ge Lan, desperately trying to reach her but breaking free too late, and the parallel to Shen Wei almost having to watch Ye Zun kill Zhao Yunlan, but managing to get there in time and take the blow for him.

Yes! The mirroring is never exact, and that only makes it more powerful. So well done!

To me these are two separate things, but the rudely-winning bit was definitely a mistake, he didn't get it and still doesn't really afterwards. Awww. *pets him*
Also, where is the doll now?? Did he send it on ahead, or shrink it to put it into his pocket, or...?
Very good question! I never thought to wonder about that before, but now that you say it ... *g*
Anyway, Jia-ge is a sweetie, and I think YQ kills him or else we'd see him again (and I can never quite forgive her for doing it, either).
He is a sweetie, but the more I think about it the more I'm sure she didn't kill him. If she had I'd expect someone to bring it up at some point to accuse her - and also, I don't think she wants to provoke the Snake Tribe into full-out opposing her either ...
Is he outright lying about not knowing the past, or is he starting to doubt the assumptions he'd made about ZYL time travelling, thinking that the blindness has messed up the timeline? (I think it's the former.)
I can never tell either! The novel mythology just doesn't line up well with YOHE as far as I can see, so that makes it hard to think he's just straight-up lying about something he does know.
Awww! Yeah, it does sound like he's been there before. I wonder what people he met there!
Omg, who on earth has been gossiping thirstily about ZYL to Ying Chun?? Actually, it's probably her interpretation of Fourth Uncle's worries about Zhu Hong's crush, isn't it? Ha.
LOL! That hadn't occurred to me, but you're not wrong, that makes complete sense as a source of her impression! LOL!
Ohh, I wonder if SW was starting to have doubts about the timeline, and ZYL calling him "Xiao Wei" proved his doubts were wrong?
I'm not really sure why he'd start having doubts? Can you say more about where that might be coming from?
It's definitely thrown him back to YOHE, anyway, to his younger self, and All Those Feelings. And this time when ZYL stumbles, it's SW who catches him. <3 <3 <3
100% with the YOHE of it all, yes! And YES to SW catching ZYL! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Also love his complete failure to hold a grudge against Ya Qing -- she led him to Ye Zun and is still on YZ's side, but ZYL is talking pure politics, trying to reason with her. LOVE!!
Yes, he's doing great here!
Absolutely classic, best best best Shen Wei & CSZ moment, with both of them confirming their on-going relationship right there in front of everyone!!! <3 <3 <3
YESSSSSSSSSSSS I love it so! These two are always so great together, I wish we'd got more scenes with them but what we did get is EXCELLENT. :D
Ha, Professor Ouyang is wearing sunglasses. That has to be deliberate, right? He's also been struck blind, but ethically rather than literally. ;-p
OMG! That would never have occurred to me, but that parallel makes a LOT of sense, wow! Great catch!
