An exhausting walk in the horrible countryside
In the midst of miserable nonsense,
a_reasonable_man has sent me a copy of Tom Eid's A Bog's Life: 37 Bogs to Discover and Explore Throughout New England (2023) which opened to common fauna and bog bodies and
choco_frosh has sent me a copy of Marissa Lingen's A Dubious Clamor (2026) which arrived in a shower of affirming stickers and the Somerville Theatre has purchased its own building, all of which is unequivocally nice.

Somerville Theatre

And hurray for the Somerville Theatre! And also for the beautiful bogs of New England!

I'm looking forward!

The guide suggests ten in Massachusetts. A couple are way out in the west of the state and one is on the Cape, but a bunch of the others would be within sane driving distance. The Great Meadows in Arlington do not rate a mention, but I don't have to get defensive about it.

You remember the cornfield!

I do remember the cornfield! It is not included, which since the guide is not a comprehensive catalogue of bogs, fens, and peatlands in New England looks like an idiosyncrasy of the criteria for inclusion:
"For the hikes, the bogs were chosen for their accessibility to local roads, diversity of flora and fauna, and boardwalks and hiking trails that are established for all abilities and ages."
I guess "accessible" is legally distinguishable from "waiting for you."
