To Winspit in the rain

Storm Austen blew in yesterday afternoon and knocked things over - bins, flowerpots, the occasional tree. Blew out again quite swiftly, and we had a quiet evening. Today we have Storm Boelo ("Boo-lo") coming in later, though it looks like the worst of the weather will track north of us.

Set off early for a walk down by the coast, hoping to beat the winds, if not the rain. Left the car at Worth Matravers, and took the lane that runs beside the small estate of modern villas and bungalows, most of them weekend homes and holiday cottages these days. Onto the track down to the old quarry at Winspit. It's a good wet weather walk, sheltered on a windy day, winding down a combe to the sea, and the stone track is never deep in mud.

Had the old quarry to myself, and sat upon a rock on the ledges, gazing out at grey sea and grey sky, the rain falling steadily into my coffee. The waves still chaotic after Storm Austen, topped with white horses. Further along the coast, Anvil Point, half lost in cloud, was living up to its name, spray from the waves rising almost to the height of the clifftop.

The sky pale grey along the horizon, dark layers of rain cloud drifting by overhead. Black cormorants skimming over grey waves, and grey gulls soaring against a grey sky. The rocks of the quarry dark with rain.

Everything in monochrome. Except, in one corner of the quarry workings, a colony of purple-green wild cabbage lurking furtively, and apparently, like me, enjoying the rain.

Eventually it was time to make the one mile climb back up the track to the village, the rain falling heavily now. Stonechats scolding me from perches on the brambles. The rooks of St Aldhelm's Head swirling in black flocks above the wet fields. Back in the village, sat on the stone bench beside the duck pond for my second cup of coffee. Very peaceful. Not a soul about in the village. Just the rain falling into the pond, and the ripples spreading. Though the pond itself is sadly duckless these days, and half smothered in a thick algal growth.

On the way home, in a field beside the road, a ewe with a tiny new-born lamb. It seems an odd sight for October, but the local breeds of Dorset sheep are famed for lambing all year round.

Lakes and rocks

We went to Sweden for our summer holiday this year. Even though are countries are neighbours, most of Sweden is on a rocky underground and with one small exception Denmark is one a chalky limestone underground, so there are some rather noticeable and, from a Danish perspective, dramatic differences.

There may be a few of you who have come over from Pillowfort and you may have seen some of these pictures before as I've been posting them in a steady stream there.

Hi, all! We're a bit snowed under at the moment. The rewatch will resume in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, we all have a chance to catch up! The last couple of posts are here:
  • Episode 21 - part 1 - the start of the Blindness arc; the SID greet the Envoy; Zhao Yunlan goes to the hospital; Zhao Xinci talks to his son

  • Episode 21 - part 2 - Reunion Festival; Ya Qing attacks Zhu Hong; "Xiao-Wei"

  • Episode 22 - part 1 - Shen Wei kneels in the rain; the Miracle Doctor heals Zhao Yunlan's eyes (but there's a catch)

Name: Solstice

Age: 30s

I mostly post about: Anything that catches my attention long enough, be it various media (music, shows, games, books), hobbies, crafts, current events, or personal life. Also round ups of things I found interesting, and miscellaneous kitchen experiments.

My hobbies are: Reading, journaling, bookbinding, stationery (+fountain pens), tea, art

My fandoms are: They tend to come and go like an ever-turning wheel, but at the moment they are Bleach, The Apothecary Diaries, and Witch Hat Atelier. Although, note that I am the kind of fan who tends to just go heart eyes and throws heart confetti at fics/art/meta instead of posting my own stuff.

I'm looking to meet people who: Are not overly judgmental, appreciate text-heavy posts, and have similar or adjacent interests. I'm open to meeting people who have no shared interests, though! The overlap just makes it easier to talk.

My posting schedule tends to be: Based on how I post on other sites, sporadic. Multiple times a week when something's going down, such as now, when I'm moving from Pillowfort. But more likely long posts around twice or thrice a month, with some micro posts in between.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:

  • Bigotry, hate speech, and dehumanizing language.
  • Undisclosed AI use.
  • Unlabeled graphic content, be it sexual, violent, or just plain gross. Nothing personal against them, but for these things I'd rather find them intentionally instead of incidentally.
  • Proselytizing, and religious supremism.

Before adding me, you should know:

  • There might be times I'm too tired to English and may post journals in Filipino instead.
  • I am a chronic lurker, and new to Dreamwidth, so I'm figuring out how to do low-energy interactions (such as simply hitting a 'like' or 'heart' to show I appreciate the post/comment, or to show emotional support) without being a bit spammy.
  • I like darker aesthetics and themes in my media, and I might post something like a song with a scary-looking album cover, or look closely at a character who is morally ambiguous or has definitely done something terrible.

Kodansha is back for a second round this year with the Blue Lock: The Perfect Shot bundle. I'm going to go ahead and quote HumbleBundle's description for this one:

When Japan’s national football team ranked low at the 2018 World Cup, they knew something needed to be done. Enter Yoichi Isagi, the hero of Blue Lock, Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura’s shonen manga series about a cutthroat football training program designed to create the best striker in the world! Now, you can get all currently published digital volumes of Blue Lock in one bundle, including volumes of the main series up to #38, redemption code for #39 on kodansha.us, and seven volumes of prequel miniseries Episode Nagi by Kota Sannomiya, Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura! Dive into a manga series perfect for football fans and shonen readers alike! Get these manga ebooks now at the price of your choosing, and support BINC with your purchase!

The full bundle is 45 volumes for $30, but you can get smaller bundles for lesser amounts.

This bundle supports Book Industry Charitable Foundation, which has helped bookstore and comic book store employees and owners who encounter unexpected financial crises. The Binc Foundation works to keep book people in their homes, in their jobs, and with their families – stabilizing the brick and mortar bookstore community. With some bundles, you can pick which charity you want your donation to go to, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this one. If you scroll down on the right hand side of the Humble Bundle page, you can also find an area where you can adjust how much of your purchase goes to which organization (the charity, the publisher, and Humble Bundle, respectively), with a minimum mandatory amount to Humble Bundle as the host.

With most manga ebook volumes costing around $7 USD (sometimes fifty cents less, sometimes a few dollars more), five volumes alone would justify the cost of the bundle—and the total bundle has 45 volumes! That's about sixty-seven cents per tankoubon.

This bundle will end in about three weeks.

The Fall Garden

Oct. 22nd, 2026 03:39 pm[personal profile] mdehners posting in [community profile] gardening

Things are winding up with the last of the Summer plants. The Sunchokes look pretty sad. I've 2 fruits on the Winter Squash I planted back in early July. In a couple of days I'll harvest the oldest as Summer Squash. So much for that experiment;>!
I should be able to harvest my 1st Turnips around Halloween/Samhain and while I could harvest some of the Collards I'll wait till a few days after Frost.
While I'm a big fan of the family, I don't like Collards and HATE Kale! So, this Summer I Googled the sweetest cultivars of Collards and found 2, of which the rarest I grew out, 'White Mountain'. It's an Appalachian Heirloom so it should do well here in E TN. I've tasted the thinnings and they were very sweet. Been nibbling bits for the last month and so far so good. Pretty too. Unfortunately, snails like it too!
Should have Chinese and Korean Daikons next month. No sign of swelling stems on the Kohlrabi and it's WAY to soon for Beets.
Cheers!
Pat

squigglyv: The baddest of gingers. (Default)
Name:
Veronica

Age:
31, but I'm a ginger so years only count for half.

I mostly post about:
Haven't posted that much yet but I expect to share my worldbuilding and worldbuilding-adjacent thoughts, poetry, personal journaling, crockpot recipes, and a little bit of video game stuff. I was on Pillowfort (RIP) for a few months but I was just sharing bits of art and poetry, I didn't really get into the blogging thing, so I want to try and do a bit more stuff here.

My hobbies are:
Art in many forms, roleplaying, poetry, worldbuilding, anthropology, history. Kinda guns and cars too, but mostly from afar since I can't afford physical hobbies and those two are dominated by toxic men anyway.

My fandoms are:
Not a fandom person, I don't keep up with new releases of anything anyway. I might occasionally share some things related to my Star Wars or Warhammer 40k OCs (and it would be fun to hear about others', especially with WH40k, I fucking love seeing Your Dudes) but that's about it.

I'm looking to meet people who:
Have shared creative interests, similar aesthetic tastes, or a similar lust for worldly knowledge to yap with. I love extremely well-studied authors and artists.

More broadly I'd be down to chat about anything adjacent to my interests or experiences, even if it doesn't make for a long-term friendship. Other chronically ill folks, people who work in uncommon or unorthodox media (calligraphy? typesetting? anomalocaris pin-ups?), students/academics (especially in the social sciences), with the right vibe anything goes.

My posting schedule tends to be:
Sporadic. Multiple posts per month if I'm in a good mood, long hiatuses if I'm in a bad mood. The site is still fresh and new for me so I'll probably be posting very frequently in these first few weeks.

I like commenting on things when I see the opportunity (and can overcome my anxiety which is the harder part lol) but that isn't too common, as I feel like an alien with the "wrong" interests everywhere I go and it puts me on edge in social spaces.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:
I can't stand lots of things, but DNIs are naive at best. Just don't be a fucking poser or a plagiarist or some shit.

Before adding me, you should know:
Sexual topics may appear on my blog sometimes, though any raunchy images will be behind a cut. Also, my fiction deals with extremely dark subject matter of all types, so I'd advise sensitive folks to steer clear.
