Survival Mode Jackpot
I just have to share that with you guys:

I had a loooong break from that game. Several years. So I hopped into the action, starting with the Spawn Ship in Space. Had a lot to figure out, but after getting the basic stuff patchworked on the vessel, with the first Solarpanels, so we don't freeze to death, everything started to look good.

Then the Hydrogen Tank dropped and I was pretty much out of fuel.

All Asteroids in Range, no Ice.

Whoopsy.

The Starting Station you get GPS Markers early one, seems to be on a planet, so out of reach.

I was close to give up, when I noticed that one Asteroid far out, somehow wasn't as white as all the others. But well, most likely just a Rendering error.

So ye, as I had nothing to lose anymore, I used my last fuel to fire up the engines, with just enough spare H² to be able to break of course... aaand Jackpot! A whole Asteroid made out of ice.

I heard those boys are super rare.

If that ain't luck, I don't know.

Missed that kind of Adventure :D

My H2 "escape pod ship" also spawned relatively close to an ice roid. I wonder if that's on purpose, because as you say - no H2 in an H2 only ship is "game over".

I also find that the early game in SE to offer the most gameplay, which is one of the reasons I start from scratch a lot. Once I build my fleet, then I'm left with "Now what?"
Iceteroids are not rare, but they're also not very common. One just needs to pay attention to the reflected color emanating from the asteroid surfaces. Iceteroids tend to have a blueish tint - some more subtle than others. In my most recent space start, I spotted and mapped at least four between the Earthlike and its moon, and another four traveling past the moon toward deep space (these last four were relatively near the moon ... say, around 20-40km from an orbital station above the moon's surface).
