I don't understand the fascination with communism of this community
Sorry that I have to potentially spike your annoyance meter instead of some poor redditor but Reddit requires that you wait time before you can post when you have a new account.

So I played this game for a while on a friends console and started reading some threads in the subreddit out of boredom and I noticed that a lot of people long for communism while admitting that not even communists like other communists. How is that "perfect" system supposed to work with real people? When we all have chips that control our brains then it becomes plausible, but none of us would even be truly living.

Capitalism is fine. Nothing motivates people to achieve and progress better than the prospect of personal gain. You can provide for others, have a piece of mind and invest in things that you believe in that will be developed by other people who seek personal gain. It's the best system for real not imaginary in some communist book humans. Not to mention how capitalism and the industrial revolution has made our population numbers explode, % of starving people decrease, advanced countless sectors like technology, medicine etc and made reading books a part of everyday life for most people with the printing press. It's hard to believe, but not that long ago most people just weren't reading and writing which is crazy. And also western society has gotten much better over time. Just the fact that we have massive discussions about our past and some current events automatically makes us better than anyone else and you can't argue with me on that.

I appreciate that the community seems to criticise Stalin, Mao etc as much as Hitler and Churchil etc at least. It seems like most people in here simply daydream about a perfect world instead of whining about eating the rich or simpling for the dictator that just happened to call himself the right 'ist'.

Counter point: capitalism is the only thing that can propel us into the space age and save our species.

I have no idea how someone can think that by doing less we would end up achieving more. That indicates that you started having an idea(replacing capitalism), but stopped halfway through(not realizing that thanks to capitalism we have achieved more in the last 200 years than the previous 2000. Oh and if we don't conquer more planets one day we will surely end.).

Depends on the sub.
Sir, this is a video game. People like to learn things. People actually spend their entire lives studying few or even just one subject. Thats how people learn. They read stuff. Thats why people are "fascinated" with things, because they like learning new things.

I can't believe this is even a topic.

I guess that I made too much sense to be argued with
No system would ever be perfect. What I liked about Disco Elysium was that it was not sugercoating anything. And you can freely, without basically any RL consequence choose whatever. You can try, you can play and fool around. You can see what happens. You can even learna bit about yourself and your own beliefs if you stay openminded.

But that does not mean you are a capitalist, communist, moralist etc. I think that putting oneself into someone elses shoes is a great way how to learn empathy and social skills needed to exist in this world.

IMHO give or take, there needs to be all groups of people present at the highest places and they need to have a proper discussion. Because you would not have majority of population that can read and write without at least a bit of socialism - like state supported, public basic schooling system. But you also cannot have functioning economy without private property and companies. You cannot have efficient and just court system without a bit of moralism and freedom without a bit of anarchy. There is probably only one -ism in Disco Elysium that the real world can do without. And if you read and explore this last -ism in game, well, you can see for yourself how twisted that one is and that it does not make any real sense without seriously bending the reality.

But that is what this game is about. RPG. Roleplaying game. You can be whatever you like and in Disco, you can be one really sick bastard or love you all working class good cop commie.

It does not matter because what matters is how you feel after finishing the game. And what this game does perfectly is putting you up for some tough choices sometimes, where every answer has something appealing or sometimes neither that you could choose - and you end up being the most boring apolitical cop ever :)

All in all, I might also be against or for some or any political ideas in the game. I might voice mz thoughts about how I feel about them. And zou put it right - communism is an utopic ideology that cannot work in real world with real people. But neither is capitalism. Or moralism. Or any other -ism. But I guess, trying to understand why the other party feels the way they feel and being open to different ideas and solutions is the key for a functioning asociety.

But I guess we would need a lot more education and psychohygiene to get there.

Right now, I think that serious discussions like this is exactly what Disco Elysium was tring to trigger.

If you want to keep your mind calm, I suggest not reading online comments out of boredom. There are other, more interesting things to read out there

I'm not gonna straight up argue about communism on steam, but the reason so many disco elysium fans are communists is because the game is made by communists and is about communism. Doing any sort of serious analysis of the text will indicate that it is absolutely pro-communism (&& anti- capitalism/moralism/fascism/liberalism), and there's just not a lot of media that does that.

It's really refreshing to see a video game (let alone one This Fantastic) that like, gets it. And communists love arguing with each other about things, so we're pretty active in fan discussions about the game.

A lot of the "all other communists are annoying and/or not materialist enough" stuff is a bit of an in-joke. Yeah, it can be a problem irl when it comes to organizing, but when this attitude is portrayed in Disco Elysium, it mostly reads as constructive criticism. We do frequently get on with each other haha.

Hope this answers your question!

Not a problem at all, We must ensure complete ideological synchronicity to ever even hope to build 0.0001% of communism. If you say otherwise you're probably a trotskyist so basically worse than a liberal

I'm way less sensible than the other guy so I am actually going to argue about communism on steam forums. First of all Communism is in no way utopic, there are utopic strands of communist thought but Marxist Leninists (The guys you think of when you think of Communists, Pre-Dengist China, Vietnam, etc) follow something called scientific socialism, we don't just think Communism will happen because it's a better system (although it also is) we think it will happen because the contradictions of Capitalism are fundamentally resolvable (I know I'm throwing a bunch of big words at you here sorry about that I'll try to explain). Basically the main contradiction of Capitalism is this, The Bourgeoisie (People who own businesses) want to make as much profit as possible, therefore they want their workers (The Proletarians) to work as hard as possible, as long as possible for the least amount of pay. The Proletarians on the other hand (wage workers) want to work as little as possible for the most amount of pay. The conflict between these two desires is irreconcilable so one of them has to win in the end, the workers will logically be the winners since the proletariat are the ones who actually keep everything up and running while the bourgeoisie for their part contribute practically nothing.

The victory of the proletariat is the establishment of a Dictatorship of The Proletariat (Sounds way scarier than it is lmao, this stuff is just very academic), this doesn't mean one guy is in charge rather the state itself is run by and for the workers, currently what we have is a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie where the state protects the interests of the owning class with stuff like private property law and oppresses the workers with stuff like union busting etc. Basically we just want a system where the workers are compensated fairly, only have to work as much as is necessary and no one can leech off the labour of others. You've probably been thinking "Since the former Soviet Union states and China are Capitalist now, doesn't that prove that communism really isn't possible?" and while it seems like it might be something we didn't account for, we did. In fact before even the USSR was established we knew something like that might happen, since Capitalist countries would obviously be opposed to Communism there was no chance they wouldn't try to restore Capitalism in Communist countries either through internal sabotage and reforms, economic sanctions or out-right invasion. In order for Communism to ever survive in the long term, the major Capitalist competition must in turn become communists, and there's nothing we can really do to ensure this other than supporting Communists in other countries. Even though the first wave of Socialism failed, we have a duty to build the next one in the hopes that it works. Throughout history there were many many failed democratic revolutions, if the rebels had all just decided to quit after that where would we be today, as the game itself says "It hasn't really worked out, but neither has love, should we just stop building love too?"

Yeah dude, Communism sucks at space travel, just don't look up who put the first satellite in space, or the first human for that matter. Also Jesus Christ you really think the only way to stop climate change is to just go to another planet? Bad luck, Mars is not quality real estate and there's no hope in hell we're getting to an exoplanet before Earth's ecosystem ♥♥♥♥♥ itself. Stopping climate change is way ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ easier and comes with the nice benefit of not annihilating an entire planet's worth of beautiful flora and fauna for the sake of a 0.2% upturn in Funko Pop stock. Go back to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ COD subreddit and talk about your favourite carbon copy action man ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

The planet cant be killed, only we can be killed. Psychopaths always cheat their way to the top, so capitalism, communism, its all the same. All you can do is try save yourself and try to live your best life. Which is by the way, much more difficult to achieve under communist rule. Just ask anyone who lived through Pol Pot, or Mao, or Stalin.
The game is mature and explores all ideologies fairly deeply and allows you to work through your own thought processes in your world view. The writers may be Marxist’s and I’m fairly right wing personally but the game is a complete masterpiece and I find the constant back and forth about it quite cringe, especially when your play through can vary and all are rewarding or at least stimulating in their own right.

I don’t think the game is pro anything and the writers deserve a ton of credit for it, the *need* for some to claim this game as their own just reinforces the fact that more people need to approach things like politics differently and games like DE are needed.
