If I'm ever caught for a crime punishable by the death penalty, once I've exhausted my legal defense options and appeals, I'd definitely volunteer for any kind of experimental euthanasia. For science. Current Mood: full | | Friday, April 1st, 2005 | | 1:26 pm |

From permavultur Quote of the day: "At this point, gay people voting for Republicans is like watching a burn victim intentionally mash their hand into the glowing coils of a stove. You want to shout out to them, 'Why are you doing that? Stop!', but it is so absurd and mind-bending that you can't even express yourself in terms that other humans would understand." This happens EVERY DAY. ( Know my enemies.Collapse )I work at a clinic that does abortions. I am extremely proud of it - I support their mission to provide the full range of reproductive health care to all patients. There are protestors outside the clinic every day. Recently, the "Truth Trucks" came to Minneapolis, courtesy of the "Center for Bioethical Reform." They changed nobody's mind. I would not be intimidated out of my job, ever. I'd do abortions if I had the training. The only reason I don't is because I'm lazy and because I don't really want to move out of the city. If I were not so lazy that I took the time to go back to undergrad, finish my prereqs, go through med school, and finish residency, I'd do abortions. If I was able to do abortions, I'd go where they were needed - not Minneapolis. If things get bad enough, that's exactly what I'll do, but I am selfish and want to wait until they truly are that bad. If people spent as much time, effort, and money on preventing unintended pregnancy, supporting pregnant women, and making adoption easier, as they do on harassment and legalistic challenges to abortion, the rate in the United States would be close to zero. For crying out loud http://www.salon.com/ent/col/fix/2004/04/21/wed/index.htmlFirst-class scene: "Apprentice" troublemaker Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth reportedly lit into an American Airlines ticket agent who refused to upgrade her coach ticket to first class on Sunday. "It was the 8:15 flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, and there Omarosa was screaming at this poor woman, 'Don't you know who I am? I was on "The Apprentice!"'" a witness reports. Meanwhile, Herbal Essences, having been flooded with angry calls, appears to be backing away from its decision to use Omarosa in an ad campaign for its shampoo. Clairol, which makes Herbal Essences, issued the following statement, "[Omarosa] is not a spokesperson for the brand nor have any decisions been made on whether or not we will use any of her filmed segments." (Page Six) A shampoo company is flooded with angry calls over their choice of spokesperson. How do we harness this shallow energy for things that actually matter? Man...
You know, every once in awhile, things fully restore my faith in humanity. Usually it is at the lowest point, teetering on the brink of utter evil, horror, depression, oppression, and despair. This post is spreading around the internet. People are e-mailing it to friends and family. It was posted on Atrios. It was posted on BoingBoing (by fontosaurus!). Worried about the prohibitive cost of an entire bouquet, this guy set up a PayPal donation thinger so people could collectively buy bouquets. I'm also fascinated by the power of people I am close to and even know. This started in Minnesota! This was internet-driven, but by people I know, actually know. I know fontosaurus not only online, but in person! It's incredible. And the scope of this is so wonderful...it reminds people that we are truly connected now, all over. This meme gets posted, then spread, then goes offline, and now we have reporters contacting people about it, and workers from the flower shops commenting with their thanks. Hell, people who receive flowers are posting pictures of them! deepsicks e-mailed me after she read my earlier post, and I think she summed it up well (also, she called me an internet addict): "i saw the post about flowers for couples getting married in san fran, and thought it was awesome. but i didn't feel comfortable with the cash flow as such. then i went to a bar to watch a friend's band... and found $55 on the floor. which i pocketed. then came home. and paypaled that full amount to the guy with the "flowers for al and don" site (which i'm trusting very much is not a scam... though i would've liked to specify "best wishes from minneapolis" just to reprasent. that would've involved using a phone, though ; ). my thoughts/feelings about this country, this culture, this life vary so dramatically, and easily, too, it's almost more than i can take (the ups and downs) but i couldn't take it otherwise--the low upon low upon low without a glimpse of hope, compassion, awareness and pure fucking love."
