Te zingen op de melodie van Staying Alive.

1

Een bak friet is lekker vet en zout
maar geef me erwtensoep, want ik heb het koud
Op vet alleen kan ik niet vooruit
geef me verse groenten en wat fruit

(Refrein)

2
Wat zullen we vanavond eten schat
Een goeie stamppot lijkt me wat
Voor schillen ben ik veel te lui
Hier is een wortel en een ui

Car, House Window

The last couple of days have been mostly about the car.  It was incredibly filthy.  There is absolutely no reason to clean the car during the summer.  One trip up and down our mile long dirt road undoes any cleaning you do, laying another layer of dust on everything. Yes, I could spend a couple hours a week cleaning the car, but I'm much more interested in doing other things.  It doesn't help that the car gets bits of hay and grass in it when I make a quick trip to get Firefly extra hay. It gets arena sand in it from setting up and taking down obstacles in the arena. Boots drop dirt and gravel in the footwells  and so on. Usually I try to wait for the first rains before cleaning but M and I are off on Thursday on a little trip to see some of my family.
Once the car was mucked out I began laying out the woodshed door.  I remember why I stopped now, I was trying to figure out if I need to lap one board over the other.  I think I do, it will make things ever so much more water tight.  That means I need to finish digging the table saw out.  It has been covered with a tarp for most of the summer, which at least kept it clean!
There is one more chore before the rains really set in, and that is to fix the east end of the house where the last earthquake shook things around. The quake in July was a 5.6 which is big enough to really get your attention.  Nothing broke, except some caulking.  This corner has been a repeated problem. I'm going to pry some trim off, put some flashing between the windows  it to help weatherproof things.  When the trim goes back up I need to re-caulk all around the windows. Winter is coming!.

The window on the left needs to be replaced, it lost its seal between the panes of glass and is a mess but at least it doesn't leak. The house needs a coat of paint as well.   This corner is the worst, it feels the earthquakes more and it gets the full brunt of both summer sun and winter storms.  Now that I'm beginning to recover from putting the new roof on last year, those things are climbing up the priority list.

Another lasercutting project

A quickie this time.

Last weekend, Stoneshop and I were invited to a wedding. The young couple had asked for monetary contributions to their honeymoon, and we were happy to oblige, but giving money is so boring! I decided to place the money inside a card, and then spruce up the envelope by lasercutting a pattern out of it, so it would show the card inside. I chose leaf patterns because the honeymoon will be to a country with jungle and wilderness areas.

The trick was cutting one side of the envelope without harming the other. This was easy: I slipped a piece of trespa board inside, which is very hard to cut, and it protected the back of the envelope.

Pretty simple, but I like the way it looks. I hope the bride liked it, too.

I'm feeling pretty good this morning.   Day before yesterday I took that medication and knocked myself sideways. Yesterday I took no Meclizine  AND no Sudafed, just some antihistomine.  Yesterday the air began to change. The northwest winds (same ones that triggered PG&E to turn on the power) have prevailed and yesterday afternoon things began cooling down. Currently it is 49F just before the sun rises.  High will be 75F down from 97F two days ago.  Air changes always affect me strongly and this one is in a positive direction!
Chores for the day include cleaning the car in prep for our trip next week and building the woodshed door.  These seem achievable today!

For the Souls-curious and for people who enjoy watching Let's Plays of games they will never play*, I present a curated collection of Dark Souls 1 videos, in the hope that you will find one that you enjoy the vibe of.

The Emotional Journey

If you have half an hour, JessieGender's story of her quest to prove herself by beating Dark Souls is wonderful and very heartfelt:

I Played Dark Souls for the First Time in 2022

Captures the emotional journey of playing your first Souls game ("MOTHERFUCKER!!!"), and the way that they’re somehow a communal experience even if you play completely solo.

The Let’s Play (With Coaching)

Because he's a solid 40% of how I ended up playing Dark Souls:

Reggie VS Dark Souls

I discovered Reggie and Woolie via their excellent Disco Elysium Let's Play (absolutely the smartest one I've seen), and that was how I ended up watching this, on the basis that obviously I'd never be able to play a Souls game so no worries about spoilers, but they sounded interesting so it could be fun to watch.

Reggie's new to the game, Woolie is trying to coach him through it, and the process gives you the best look at how the mechanics work and how someone actually learns to play these games.

They're both extremely funny, and Reggie's earnest expressiveness (in contrast to Woolie’s cool gamer irony) is a joy forever. He’s a far better player than I am, but he fucks up, he has stupid gravity deaths, he panics and flails and giggles at his mistakes, and it’s incredibly endearing.

And I watched Woolie coach Reggie through combat basics, and the tutorial, and into the first few areas, and with that and Gigadad (see later), I went "… huh, maybe if I really worked at it I could beat the tutorial???" and then we know what happpened.

( Cut for length )

{*Be careful, though. That's how they got me.}

Moving Slow, Power.

I'm moving pretty slow today.  Was a little dull this morning and took about 1/2 a dose of meclizine.  Probably a mistake.  No I'm not acutely dizzy, but.

Power is still out 36+ hours later.  Cobb Mountain which is well to the north west of us had a windy night.  Gusts up to 20mph.  Our local mountain Cow Mountain, had gusts up to 15 miles an hour last night.  Neither of these numbers strike me as being particularly dangerous.

Edit: I had just filled the generator, which lasts for 7+ hours, when I saw a helicopter overhead very low.  It was clearly flying the power lines. Helicopters mean the power will be coming on soon, and indeed it has; 37 1/2 hours after it went out. The outage was scheduled to go for another full day.  I'm going to let the generator stay on until it is empty as it has regular gas in it which won't store well average shelf life 2 to 3 months at best. When it is empty I'll fill it with Tool Gas which will last for up to a couple of years or until the power gets turned off again.

PG&E, ETS Event

For reasons that are completely beyond me, our power company, PG&E, (whom I loath) has chosen to shut off the power.  Yes we are in a Red Flag warning, for low humidity, and high winds.  The danger is real, it is extraordinarily dry out here, BUT.  There is almost no wind. Right now I'm getting the gentlest of air flow through the open door, and that is after a long period of still air.  The highest "wind" I saw on the mountaintop monitors was 12 mph.  But the power has been off to a thousand people in my county for almost 24 hours and is not expected to be back on for a couple of days.  Look, I fully support shutting the power down WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM!  Shutting it off for a nonexistent problem just makes me more determined to take my place fully off grid.  This is 2026, if needed there are sensors which should allow a big utility to shut off power quickly.  Amazingly even a human monitor could make that call!
I hasten to say we are fine. My little Honda generator is humming away powering: the refrigerator, the freezer, the internet and a device charging plug.  I have a battery powered, solar charged light next to me giving enough light to see by.  The stove is propane so we can cook. So is the water heater.  So the only things we are really missing are the microwave, the washing machine and a few overhead lights.

I have canceled the weekend event.  Probably for the best as I'm still not feeling quite well.  I did get some medicine, meclizine. Meclizine is sometimes sold as Dramamine. I took slightly less than 1/4 of a dose to start, which didn't make me drowsy, but did seem to help a little.  Tomorrow I'll brave a larger dose if needed.

Very slowly recovering from the Vertigo episodes.  It has been helpful to talk to a couple of other people who have had them and can talk about the experience. Need to get some of the medications that were prescribed.  It is dawning on me that I now really want the security of a medicine that will allow me to function well enough to get home if I have an episode.  Sigh.

I don't think this weekend's ETS competition event will have enough people signed up to be able to go forward. Currently I have two people signed up.  One is in both events on Sunday  and the other is in one event on Saturday.  I know of two or three people who have said they were coming, but even with them it isn't enough.  I need 8 to 10 riders in each of the four events to break even.

The garden is slowing down as the fall advances.  Got two more nice butternut squashes today.

Over the last two or three days a lot of bookkeeping has gotten done.  Usually by this time in the fall I'm much more mentally clear (summer is full of allergies) and ready to catch up on all the summer backlog.  Every year I vow that I will keep up with the bookkeeping instead of falling behind....
Fall is when ALL of my big bills come in.  It starts with the annual (or bi-annual) hay purchase, moves on to annual insurance payments and ends with land taxes.  Bank accounts that had been looking plump drain away.  Sigh.  There shouldn't be any real surprises this year so it's all under control.  I've even found, and scanned, the bank statements that the stupid auditor wants.  What a nightmare that is.  The insurance company hires an outside vendor to audit accounts.  The outside vendor has set up a portal that you can export your Quick Books or other accounting software to.  I don't use accounting software.  I'm WAY too small. I use nice, old fashioned spreadsheets.  My CPA accepts spreadsheets, especially nice orderly ones that give totals across the top.  The audit folks?  No way.  Apparently you can lie on spreadsheets but not on accounting software?  So I copy my bank statements. Statements that don't always reflect cash income that IS reflected on my spreadsheets.   Can I send them to the auditor?  No, I cannot, that would be improper.  What I can do is send them to my long suffering Agent, so SHE can email them to the auditor.   Every year I rather feel like I have stepped through the looking glass with Alice.

Had a nice conversation with Lori at Rainbow Ag about possibly hosting an informational event with them.
Am expecting Mark O at 8:30 tomorrow morning to do some work, so had better get off to bed now.

Ada Lovelace Day

Today is the day to honour Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, for being the first computer programmer. She wrote the outlines of a program for a computer that she had never seen because it had not been built yet. She also imagined what kind of things such a device could be used for. All hail Ada!

A colourful depiction of the face of Ada Lovelace

This evening, we'll visit our local hackerspace and hang up a flag line that I decorated with some laser cut glittery letters, spelling out IT'S ADA DAY ! I'll be wearing my best Ada shirt too.
