Subject:a study of American culture
Posted by:fun_studies.
Time:6:58 pm.
Hallo, I'm new to this community.
I'm a Russian who studies American culture.
I'm working on my postgrad thesis in lingvoculturology and I'm asking you for help.

IF YOU ARE FROM THE USA AND YOU ARE A NATIVE SPEAKER, please help me (it's terribly difficult to find an American here in Russia and make him/her answer the
questions :))).

Please, give a detailed example – like a scene from a movie, a book or from life - of a situation when a person is having fun. Give your AGE, please.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

P.S. I have just several months to go before I defend the thesis and the day I'll do it seems to be the happiest day in my life - I'm so tired of understanding that I MUST write something every day :)

Vala.

Subject:Should I drop in at a workshop when I've left the field
Posted by:micat.
Time:11:52 pm.
Cross posted from scientists, but I'll be glad for feedback especially from this group:

I'd like advice on a tricky problem that's nagging me since weeks.
Two years ago, I finished my thesis in area XY. In the end, my thesis did not go very well, because some professors in my department needed a reason to quarrell and my first (unwisely distributed) attempt at writing up was good fodder. After some (not too unjustified) hassel and rewriting, I graduated but had a bad feeling ever since about my thesis. Most of the thesis work however, was done in a small collaboration from whose members I never received critique, but always (polite?) positive feedback. However, I did not dare to distribute the traditional copies of my thesis because I was afraid of getting negative feedback and just wanted to get over it anyways. I should clarify that I consider nonetheless the topic and scope of my thesis sound and good. It's just that I fear I'm (was) stricken with imposter syndrome on top of everything.

I quitted the field and am now working in industry. Now an annual workshop is held in my home town, and many members of the original collaboration I worked within will attend. Granted, most PhDs have graduated by now, but there's a handful of people I'd love to meet again.

So, that is the question: Dropping in at the workshop would cost my only an holiday day, as I live elsewhere nowadays - however I'm vising my family anyway the weekend before.
But I'm rather afraid that dropping in will not be a nice, get-back-together experience at all:
I dread being asked about the unhappy events around my writing up, or even worse, receive critical comments a la: "honestly, now that you stopped working in the field anyways, we always wondered up you managed to pull that off..."
Besides, it's not guaranteed that there's really time to meet anybody, as I don't know which days people will attend. Maybe I'll just get to listen to some boring talks. On the other hand, I'm a social person and enjoy meeting people and keeping contacts going.

So what should I do? What would you do? Do you think it might be worth the effort or will it just spoil the memory of the mostly happy times of my PhD?

Subject:Scope of Practice Research Help?
Posted by:punkrockgrrrl.
Time:11:56 pm.
I am researching for my dissertation (eek!) and need help finding more articles/books/studies/wacko opinions on scope of practice for mental health professionals (MFTs, Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, etc) in California. More specifically, I need anything related to the knowledge of scope of practice the professionals have. In other words, how well do various professionals know what their SOP is and/or the SOP for other mental health fields?

Any resource or searching tips would be great. I've run into a bit of a wall.

Thanks so much.

Uh...you know, (oh by the way I'm new here, I'm an undergrad History major) sometimes I really wonder why. WHY. Especially in history. Why these theses have to be written. I mean, in some of my history classes i'm learning some of THE most inane crap, irrelevant and boring as hell to read, and published in large volumes with academic praise but while these authors have narrowed themselves to such specific topics as "Multi-cultural examination of Fur Traders' posterity intermingling with West African immigrants to North America" or "Cross-dressing in a club on a very specific street in Peru and its effects on surrounding Turtles, and the subsequent turtles' conversations with bunnies"...has anyone stepped back to look at the big picture? I used to LOVE history until it got to this. I mean I'm sure i'm being ignorant and such, and I'm not academic enough...but reading these entries and seeing others (and myself) go crazy (and depressed, and worse in some cases) over the absolutely most out-there stuff really gets me wondering on what's important in life. I don't know. I get proud of a paper I write sometimes and imagine my professor just beside him/herself over my massive brain and what it can spit out, and I definitely want the college degree, but does anyone else feel this way? A severe "seriously, what is the POINT of all this drivel?" when researching/writing papers/reading the books that are required for such papers?

I have an 8,000 word 'final year project' I hate the title, that is why the inverted commas.

I have written the intro 8 or 9 times, my supervisor told me to write a plan. I can't even do that. I am not procrastinating I am going fucking nuts.

The topic is thus; Gender in Buffy the vampire slayer. There is shit loads of work on this. Trust me there are sites and books and just a crap load ok. BUT I am not a media student, or noes that would be far to fun for me... I am a psychology student. I gave a proposal and ethics form last year and passed both hurdles. I have all these ideas and yet it on't coalesce. Thing is I ahave narrowed down. I had four topics, I am now just down to gender. I have a small pile of photocopied stuff and papers. I know I will need more, its qualitative so its like an ever continuing lit review.

I have never felt so alone in my life. My due date for this is April 24th with a three day buffer.

The worst part of it all is I am physically and mentally exhausted. I am also a caregiver for a disabled person, who of late has been sick. I just dunno what to do anymore.

Some lj-friends and I have created a new LJ community...

narewrimo

We're a lot like NaNoWriMo, but without the fancy website and dedicated to research writing instead of fiction.

Feel free to join us for National Research Writing Month, from Nov 1 - Nov 30. The goal of this endeavor is to offer encouragement to get stuff done, to basically partake in a community dedicated to BIC (Butt-in-chair) and complete whatever research writing tasks we have on hand.

We invite you to join us for this marathon of research writing if you have any reports, articles, a disseration, a thesis, or basically any non-fiction writing you need to complete.

Feel free to post notes in the community about what you are doing, daily word counts, and links to where we can find your progress.

Good Luck and Productive Writing!

Because intercultural is defunt, I made a community for people in intercultural relationships (romantic/platonic/whatever). xcultural isn't about imaginary races or even more imaginary nationalities, but our cultures which are oh so real and often not as malleable as we'd like. xcultural is for people who recognize the difficulty associated with differing lifestyles/cultures, whose issues dwell in nurture, not nature. This is for victims of culture clash (or culture mesh if you've made it work out). If this issue appeals to you, please feel free to join so we can give each other some extra support.

I'm an undergrad doing my junior thesis and I'm supposed to hand it in in mid-March (most of the students are seniors). Now I know most of you are writing 10000000 pages now but please bear with this silly undergrad girl here.
I'm still doing research. My advisor says everything looks fine and all but when I presented my stuff my classmates don't apear to think much of it. Also I feel other people's ideas and organization are so much better than mine. I feel I'm now in an dead-end with my research and have done a little writing. This thesis is important to me since I want to get a good grade on it and don't plan to write another thesis. URGH!! What to do?

Subject:masters in tango?

Does anyone know of existing graduate work that's been done on Argentine Tango? I would really like to work it into my masters thesis, and am just beginning to look for available literature. If anyone has any leads, I would sure appreciate hearing from you--especially if you know of anyone else who's done graduate studies in tango.

Thank you very much.

Subject:Defence strategy
Posted by:carmenrumpedler.
Time:2:52 pm.
Hi all;

My dissertation defence is on February 3. I'm trying to prepare my introductory remarks in between the demands of three different teaching committments.

The department's guidelines indicate that "the candidate should speak about the issues, approaches, conclusions, and significance" of the dissertation. I don't want this to sound like a regurgitation of the introductory chapter; anyone have any suggestions?

(I asked the folks at gradattitude too. After this many years, it can't hurt to have all the advice possible)

i'm in the process of writing an undergraduate thesis, so it's my first stab at any kind of thesis writing. i'm a little confused about what is exactly supposed to be happening with my thesis advisor. all that seemingly ever happens is that i go there, express my worries (which are usually just general worries rather than specific ones), get nothing accomplished, and then my thesis advisor tells me i'm doing great (he's a really nice guy). i keep asking for reading, and he tells me i dont need to be doing any, i just need to be writing, but i didnt really read anything for like a month, so i feel a bit guilty. and now that i've started writing, well, he tells me to send him whatever i have, but that makes me nervous as well, because my drafts get pretty messy. i sent him teh very beginnings of a chapter last time, and he just said it was really great!! and then didnt offer any advice. i want to know why my thesis advisor ISNT making me suffer? is he supposed to, or is thesis writing a process in which i have to make myself do all the work? does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can make advising meetings *productive*?

I'm about 75 pages from the end of my dissertation and hoping to defend this fall. My sources are all in footnotes, so I will need to change the format for the bibliography. I can buy EndNotes for about $100 with an academic discount; is it worth it? Thanks!

Subject:Having to fight for my topic
Posted by:phdcow.
Time:10:53 am.
Does anyone else have this problem? I'm collecting my data as part of a larger field study being run by my committee. A couple of weeks ago, based on some preliminary results from another data set, the committee decided they couldn't include my measly 12-item scale in the study and that I needed to find another topic to study.

I reran the results from the other data set and included some new analyses. Lo and behold, I found some cool results that are theoretically viable.

I just sent an e-mail to my committee with these results and practically begged them to let me keep my measure in the study.

Is this part of the "test" of getting my doctorate?

Subject:Sixty pages of complete and total academic drivel
Posted by:la_luna.
Time:3:00 am.
Mood:triumphant.
It's done. The rough draft, that is. All sixty pages of it. The thesis, I mean. "Thurber and Nugent's The Male Animal: A Neo-Aristotelian Criticism." Yep. DONE, BAYBEE. Sure, it's three weeks late, but we won't mention that part. My hands are killing me from being at the keyboard all weekend. I did the last twenty-two pages this weekend. TWENTY-TWO, you get that? I write like a beeyotch when it's on the line. Mind you, it's probably all crap. What do I know? My brain is total jello.

Now, I've got three weeks before the reading draft goes to committee and my advisor goes on a month's worth of vacation. That means he has three weeks to kick my ass into total submission while I rewrite this thing to his complete satisfaction. Oh joy.

Then, when he's done with the kicking, my committee gets to commence with the kicking. They get a month to kick. When they are done kicking, I defend the thesis.

Frankly, by then, I anticipate being so bruised and utterly defenseless, I don't know how I will defend anything, much less a master's thesis!

I love summer. And root canals. And eyeball piercings. And large wooden splinters under my fingernails.

Let us not get off message, though. . .that muthaluvin rough draft is DONE!

You have no idea how I have agonized over it. I have spent more time agonizing, much more, than I have actually writing. I would have been done months ago had I not agonized at all. But then, without the agony, that would have been someone else, not me.

DONE, I said!

I've actually learned a few words of ancient Greek in the process. This one is my fave: nemesan. It means indignation. I've felt that a few times over the last few months. Oh, yeah. Righteous nemesan.

I'm out. Laters.

Hello...I'm procrastinating writing my thesis, by coming here to moan about writing my thesis (hey! At least I'm still thinking about it, right?).

I think I'm losing it. Is there anyone here doing a Psychology Phd? Anyone here working full-time and trying to finish writing a thesis at the same time? Please. I need someone who actually understands instead of going "Ahh huh. Well you'll be done soon. It's so fabulous that you're doing a phd! I wish I could do that!". These people have no idea. It's not fun. It sucks. Seriously, I'm so god damn tired I just want to die. I'd bang my head against a brick wall until I felt better or passed out, but I just don't have the energy. My eyeballs are pink. They feel like sand paper all the time. How do people do this? Why do people do this?

I'm so close to finishing, I can smell it. I'm putting the finishing touches of the first draft of my last intro chapter and then I have to write the last half of my conclusion chapter and then do a major edit/chase up of references etc that I've been procrastinating finding and I'm done...But god it just seems so over-whelming. I'm tired and frustrated and I've had enough. I want to be able to submit it to my supervisors by July so I have some hope of graduating this year...but I don't know if I can do that...unless I gave up sleep (can people survive on 4 hours sleep a night?). All I want to do right now is crawl up into a pathetic ball and sob.

I need empathy. Would anyone be interested in adding my sad, pathetic carcass to their friends list? Or does anyone want the honour of putting me out of my misery?

Well I suppose I should do something. Thank god for coffee.
