Ok. Around 9:00 p.m. tonight I was driving down J Street and...there it was.

The Beach Hut Deli is open. The Beach Hut is the new business that now lives where the True Love Coffeehouse used to be. Now I new it was opening soon; I've been inside during the remodeling even. But I just wasn't sure when exactly it would be opening, let alone the grand opening 'gala'.

Welp, it was just plain....weird...to see a packed-out front patio but with a new sign and a new awning...
And the people... I had to drive by a couple times just because. And I didn't recognize *any*body. Not that that surprised me or anything. But I'm thinking these people seem like from the outskirts, the suburbs, Elk Grove? Roseville? Arden? I...I don't know. I guess that's the point. I don't know who they are in our space there. Am I gonna be like the True Love ghosts we summoned by ouija board with our staff and friends the last weekend before we moved out....always considering it *my* place, and asking 'what are these strangers doing in my house?'.
Something tells me a few of us will feel like that for a while.

In so many ways I feel like that chapter (or at least that location's chapter!) has been closed or at least in the process of closing for quite sometime now, so I think I'm just stunned by the sheer weirdness of the sight, and the unfamiliarity.

I don't quite know how I feel about it yet. I'm guessing right now, because I have a sort of weird numbness going on. What, am I in shock or something? Anyway, I'm sure I'll find out first thing when I wake up. That's when all of my clearest thoughts come to me...sorrow, contentedness, anxiety, you name it. We'll see.

check it.
Well I'm new to the community and just wanted to say hi... and like everyone else I can't wait until the True Love reopens... and I thought I'd share this random memory I have of the place; This one time I had bought myself a new stick of eyeliner and for some reason had it in my pocket while downtown, and the last thing we did was get some coffee at the True Love, of course. We were sitting/laying on one of the couches on the patio, and when I got home I realized I was missing my eyeliner, I must have lost it in the couch. So when I come back for coffee like two or three weeks later I remember oh yeah I should look for that thing I lost, and I lift up the cushion and TA DA! there it is, not gone forever after all. So thanks for not cleaning out the couches, furreal.

oh no
oh no, I'm the puss that's home @ 6:45 am and about to take a 2 hour nap. But I gotta couple of excuses for missing a bit of the TLC-a-thon: just about the first time I sat down tonight (we were SO busy!!) was to watch/listen/experience the Bobby J. Ha-Ha Song for a half-an-hour straight, in which I was forced to participate in : ) because Bobby and I have never sung together and so he fed lines to me and I'm so delirious right now that I don't even remember half of what I said....., but I laughed so hard during his entire Ha-Ha set that I am now truly exhausted. I almost pee'd. Seriously. Whatta night. And it AIN'T over yet. At all. There's quite a bit to go, so off to bed for me and then back there at 10:20 to sing with Kev. I'm missing the waffles, but, uh, I've had 'em before. zzzzzzzzz
Onward with the Kev-Observations....

My little story.
X-posted somewhat from my own journal:

About 2 weeks ago, while at a venue in Los Angeles by the name of the Fais-do-do, in an interesting incident (which we don't have time for here) I ended up in a conversation with some guys in a band by the name of Jupiter Sunrise. Upon mentioning my city of origin, two of the boys from the band immedietly started shouting about The True Love Coffee House. At the time I had never been to this aforementioned place, but had been hearing for some time about it's impending closure at the end of August due to lease disputes. The boys were so excited to talk about midnight waffles, small venue music, and Sacramento kids... that I decided... hell, I must have been missing something all these years by never having had this True Love experience. I felt terrible telling them about it's closing -- and you could tell that it didn't float well with them either.

But, here's what I really felt terrible about:

I had never once stepped inside the place.

Now, it's not that I don't care about the local music scene, I do. It's not that I'm uncool, although I do have my lame moments. It's not that I don't know my way around Midtown, 'cause that would be just embarrassing. But, while I was raised as a Sacramento area local, I "grew up" when I moved to the Los Angeles area at 18. Somehow the ultra-urban life was liberating to me... and I feasted on every hole-in-the-wall rock, punk, latin and drum&bass venue that would let me in. I went to poetry readings, heard speakers, saw art, played music and met people -- I just didn't do it in Sacramento.

I felt it was only right that with my last 3 weeks in Sacto coming to an end about the same time as True Love... I had to make a visit. If only to see what I had missed out on.

My friend, Leah had a smoothie, I had a hot chocolate, we shared a brownie, and we watched Kevin and Allyson Seconds and David Houston play on a stage that looked something like what my first roommate created in our dorm room at the begining of freshman year.

The place was friendly, people seemed to know one another, and I didn't even get in trouble for nearly breaking the window.

I'm sorry I didn't wonder in earlier.
