Commonplace journal. Currently, stumbling around trying to get the lay of the land. Soon, I'll be back to blogging about needlepoint, moss, cooking pots of beans, sleep, shleep, opossums, raccoons, skunks, things, stuff, etc.

Companion piece to my meanderings on Wafrn.

If you, like me, have difficulty reading long rows of text, the settings menus in Dreamwidth can be troublesome.

Opening the settings in a separate, narrower window forces them to form paragraphs that are easier for my brain to keep track of.

Bringing that old Pillowfort font to the new house.

No, brain, it's ok. I wasn't busy at all.

Yes, this is amazing. A spreading blob of vibrating marine dazzle camouflage that radiates out into a half-moon.

I feel for anyone who gets this as well as pain and nausea. Luckily, I just get the visual weirdness

poorly drawn black and white jagged lines in the half moon shape of an ocular migraine

Started working on a site skin this morning for the behind the scenes places (inbox, settings pages, profiles, etc.) and it is very interesting seeing how everything is set up. I only know enough CSS to get me in trouble, so it's always an adventure when I start these things.

I'm still trying to work out how I'll keep the theme from interfering with anyone's blogs. I like to see everyone's artistic vision exactly how they made it.

I'm very tempted to try and pick it up and tinker with it over lunch, but I wouldn't want to put down the puzzle and go back to boring boring work if I did. Sooooon it will be the weekend, though.

[Me, in fetal position] 😩 Weekend?!

[Friday5pm, foraging for berries] 🍓 mm...over here! 🍓

Fox Mulder from The X-Files is laying next to a decaying tree in the middle of a forest, calling out Scully?! Dana Scully then stands up from a shrub in another part of the forest, gun held aloft, talking through a mouthful of foraged berries mm...over here!

I just realized that my first post (a reblog) on Pillowfort was only 7 months ago. I would swear it had been longer than that.

I signed up for a paid account and the help article on How do I filter my reading page? said that I would get Advanced Filters that could filter by tag, but no instructions on how to do that. I searched around in the [community profile] getting_started  community and found the answer in the comments to a post.
  1. Navigate to Organize → Manage Filters → New button to create a filter
  2. Select the subscriptions you want to include in that narrowed down view of your Reading Page
  3. Click on each and every subscribed blog you put into the filter one at a time and individually choose tags that particular account has already used in their blog to exclude them.
If I'm understanding this correctly, I can only filter tags that currently exist and that filter must be applied individually, blog by blog.

Definitely a path of granular control, but maybe too granular to be effective?

If there's a more global way to filter tags, please let me know! Like I said, I had difficulty finding any instructions, so maybe these aren't the only instructions.

One cool thing about the filters is that you can have many different cuts of your reading list and I thiiiiiink if you name one of them "Default" it may show up automatically whenever you click your Reading Page link instead of having to select it particularly?

Everything is quiet and I'm drinking coffee with two cats sitting VERY close making sure I don't do anything weird (e.g. sleep all day like yesterday).

I want to figure out brothy soups this cold season. How to make them rich, but without meat. I'm thinking parmigiano needs to be involved. I do eat fish a little, so maybe there are some more options.

How do tags work here? Can people filter this post out if they don't want to read about food?

Things to research. Much to learn. Slowly. Trying to not stress myself out.

Tumblr: tag talking/subtext/mumbles

Pillowfort: say your piece in the post

Dreamwidth: Current Location/Current Music talking/subtext/mumbles?

I like the idea of returning to this post-script murmuring. It was one of my favorite things about Tumblr posts.

Keep a sharpie in your kitchen so you can write on your food packaging.

Nothing like finding a surprise bag of cheese puffs brought home as a casual gift for me with a heart drawn on it and "Initial + Initial" in the middle. Adorable.

Can also be used to write hearts and nice cheery notes for yourself.

Was able to take time off and catch up on sleep and now I have a light sleeping-during-the day headache, but I feel more coherent. Not coherent enough to do site skin creation, but it's on my list!

Read through prettyarbitrary's new tips and then went to the Read menu → Feeds to connect some RSS feeds to my Reading Page. I haven't checked in on Questionable Content comic or XKCD in ages, so I feel kind of like a time traveler now.

Image set saga:
  • I tried out the internal image hosting. It provides some code for copy-pasting that does a thumbnail linked to the full size image. I think usually I would want to just directly show the big image.
  • So then I experimented with some code from midnightchills that bookscorpion mentioned. That just made all the images line up in an awkward tower (most likely I messed it up somehow. 😆) Edit: bookscorpion suggests the issue may be that I needed to check the box for Disable Automatic Formatting
  • Finally I looked at the page source of the functioning version and copied out the div portion, pasting it in the HTML Editor with someone else's image links, and did like bookscorpion said and switched to the Rich Text Editor to use the easier menu option to swap out the images and descriptions. Definitely a learning curve, but I think future iterations will be easier.
I'm going to look into the various image hosting options people have talked about. Getting the tools and skills for adding images here seems like it will be key for making DW feel more like home.

Here are some critters because I feel like a critter currently. Made by troubled-pasta for [personal profile] speccygeekgrrl42 in the old PF Forbidden Cats community.

"Forbidden Cats Community" with a picture of a smiling/hissing opossum "Forbidden Cats Community" with a picture of a jolly raccoon
"Forbidden Cats Community" with a picture of an exhausted binturong "Forbidden Cats Community" with a picture of a smiling/hissing skunk

Look! I even remembered to add a subject/title to this post!

Communities I'll miss. Are the mods of those communities migrating here?
  • Forbidden Cats, Opossum Lovers
  • Cats, Cat Pics, Black Cats
  • AdultingAdvice
  • ArtOfGames
  • CloudEnthusiasts, The Moon
  • Cooking
  • Crochet, Cross Stitching, Embroidery, Fiber Art, HEARTSnCRAFTS, Spinning, WeaversWeaving, Weaving
  • Finch Self Care Pet
  • FungusAmongUs, Moss n more, Succulents
  • Memes
  • Music, MusicRecs
  • Olfactory
  • small joys, SoftSpace
  • stardew-valley
  • Winter
I'm not even sure I understand how communities could work here, since they would fragment the post into multiple copies. Comments never combining into a larger conversation.
🤔

There must be a different vibe I'll just have to acclimate to and also find some communities. I looked for cat communities, but they seemed abandoned. (I could also just not know how to properly find them.)

Learned from dinosaurrainbowstarfish's post comments that you can subscribe to your own blog to see it in your Reading Page. Took me a second to find out how to do that. On desktop, there was a book icon under my profile picture for subscribing.

Helpful post from bookscorpion about getting images into DW.

I also added it to my "memories," which seems like a bookmarking feature? Interesting ...

Edit: And another great image how-to from bookscorpion!

Lots of settings to learn! I just figured out how to turn IP Address Logging off. Sorry about that, folks!

Account Settings → Privacy → IP Address Logging

To Do List:
  • Figure out why my sidebar calendar is wider than the sidebar. 🤔
  • Figure out how to mod site skin (or make a new Stylus site skin for DW), especially the post composer box (so blinding!)
  • Do I need to have a pinned post? When I started PF, I missed my Tumblr pinned post dreadfully. Now starting DW, I'm homesick for the PF sidebar blog description with its user boxes. Le sigh.
  • Rejoice over the large number of profile picture slots. Cry over how blurry all my profile pictures show up on DW. Is this a me problem or just the way it is here?
  • Figure out what the equivalent of liking a post is here. It seems like the only option is commenting, which is a wonderful skill to grow, but sometimes I don't have the energy and still want to send a virtual "yeah, I see you! ❤️"
  • Pet the kitties.
  • Fluff the pillows in my house and cherish the time left with the virtual pillows in the fort.
  • Make plans for cozy cold weather beverages. Lavender chamomile tea is so back. Maybe I will have a hot cider moment.
