Star Trek Canon Fodder

No question too stupid

Mediation Question
Will not do
seren_ccd
I feel as though I should know the answer to this, but would the Enterprise ever be called upon to help mediate between two opposing factions on a planet? I know their primary remit is exploration, but would Starfleet request them to assist in a diplomatic function? Especially if said planet provides a prime resource?

Thank you!

Vulcan Script question
please?
ratcreature
The Vulcan Language Dictionary has compiled a lot of Vulcan words and the The Star Trek Online Geekipedia has a whole section on Vulcan language too, but both use transcriptions with Latin letters, which may be practical for fic, but doesn't work for fanart (like when you want to draw a Vulcan inscription or such).

I also looked at the entry for Vulcan language on Memory Alpha, and that shows several script samples, both calligraphy (the vertical ones with the curves arranged along a line) and print (which look like very different squiggles), but no indication what the samples shown mean (probably because in a Doylist context they don't actually mean anything besides a concept artist/set designer thinking "this looks pretty and alien" but I'm a firm Watsonian by inclination and look for meaning *g*).

The only symbols I found the meaning of was characters often visible on Vulcan robes, according to this prop sale blog article about Vulcan symbols and clothing those are called Rata, Tafar and Tapan (for Concept, Discipline and Process respectively). So that seems to indicate that the Vulcan script is not an alphabet, though I guess an argument could be made that in the context of decoration with a fixed set, something that usually is just a letter can come to mean a word.

Are there any other sources with information about the Vulcan scripts, and more examples?

Related, I'd be interested if there exists more general information about meaningful symbols in Vulcan decorative arts. The IDIC symbol is of course well known, but are there any others we know of? Like representing other philosophical concepts, or do for example the families/clans have something like crests/coat of arms symbolizing them? The rank symbols on their uniforms? (I've seen on memory alpha a picture of a Vulcan captain's pin from the 20th century, but no systematic overview showing several ranks.) Are any of these known?

What year (approximately) would Spock have gone to Starfleet Academy? And how many years after that would the main part of the movie take place?

Thanks in advance!

Gaila the green girl

Ok, I have a little mix-up between what's canon and what's just from fics.

Is somehow canon that Gaila, in case she survived the Narada attack, would have become an Engineer? I've seen her in a lot of stories working under Scotty, but on the DVD's deleted scenes Jim confuses her with another Orion girl wearing Science blues.

I remember vaguely Gaila being mentioned in the novelization of the movie, and maybe there was something there indicating whether she's a redshirt or not, but I don't own the book and my memory is failing me right now.

Help please? I'm coloring a picture and I need to know if I should color her uniform red or blue.

Komack Question
Beatles: OTP

Memories Alpha and Beta are being unusually unhelpful.

I have this idea that Admiral Komack and Captain Kirk butted heads constantly, that Komack seemed to actually have it out for Kirk. But the only canon interactions I can really find are in Amok Time. Is this an idea fandom has planted in my head? And if so, where/what/why? Anyone happen to have any fic references floating around in their brains?

Thanks.

I've yet to find a transcript to check this, but is Nero's ship every actually referred to the Narada in dialogue? Does anyone (other than Spock Prime) actually know the name of the ship in the film?

Do we ever see real-time personal subspace communications in TOS? I know we see Commodores and the like, talking to Kirk over the viewscreen on the bridge, issuing orders and such. But I'm wracking my brains, trying to recall if there are any eps which feature personal real-time subspace messages, taken in private. It's just reference for something I'm working on, and Memory Alpha doesn't seem to cover it.

Healing Technology

In the TOS/Reboot era, how quickly does Starfleet healing technology work? Dermal regenerators, bone regenerators, etc?

How quickly can you mend a bruise? A cut? A broken rib? Heart surgery? A brain transplant? ;)

Beat-up Kirk was picturesque in the new movie, and he obviously had little time for medical treatment (see http://community.livejournal.com/st_reboot/583013.html for a list of all the injuries he took in one day!), but I'm curious how much they could treat how quickly in non-life-threatening circumstances.

Thanks for your help!

Vulcan emotions confuse the HECK out of me
Bioshock 2

I'm so CONFUSED about the whole emotion thing. As far as I can tell, Vulcans do have emotions and that's the whole problem. They feel things more deeply than even we humans and they used to be incredibly violent and passionate beings. And then Surak came along and said, "dude, no, LOGIC!" and the whole race begin to chain away their violent emotions. So far, I get it.

Except that the Vulcans are like WE HAZ NO EMOTIONS, THEY ARE FOR THE LESSER BEINGS. And I'm left going.... wha? Isn't that the whole point of all that discipline? That they have to control their emotions FOREVER so their emotions don't control them? Why are they so insistent that they are completely emotionless when that appears to be completely untrue? Is it like, a point of pride? If you're more emotionless than your neighbor, do you win a prize? Except wait! Pride = emotion! Now I really don't get it.

Last question, was that what Surak actually saying? I mean, did he think emotions were BAD or did he just want them to be better controlled?

Time Travel

Just what are the requirements for time travel? I know that Kirk, Spock, and Picard  have all time-traveled for one reason or another, and they all threw themselves at very large things, very quickly, but I just can't remember the science behind it.  If Kirk wanted to chase the Borg back to the Plesioscene, would he stuff the Enterprise down the nearest black hole, or loop it around the sun three times, or what? And why is it supposed to make any more sense than Superman flying around the world backwards? And why aren't people deliberately time traveling all over the place, Prime Directive be damned?
