| 2 different link styles???? |
[23 Mar 2007|09:26am] |
I want my page to have two different looking links. For simplicity, let's just say I want half of them to be blue and underlined and the rest to be red and not underlined. I don't know how to set up two distinct url styles.
My current in-page CSS (to make the links red and not underlined) looks like this:
[STYLE TYPE="text/css"] [!-- a:link {text-decoration: none; color: red;} a:active {text-decoration: none; color: red} a:visited {text-decoration: none; color: red} a:hover{text-decoration: none; color: red} --] [/STYLE]

Longtime member, don't post nor watch often. Just wanted to post and say I'm finally learning FORTRAN. It's pretty sweet that the professor I'm learning it from wrote a FORTRAN 77 book. People have been heckling me for learning a dead language. I say but everyone sounds smarter when they know latin, it must be true for FORTRAN right?...

| Of Character Encodings |
[18 Nov 2005|13:48pm] |
I am converting a web app from ASP to ASP.net and have stumbled on an annoying problem.
1. ASP code accepts user input and stores value in the database SQL field type is nvarchar(200). BUT the query does not use N'' to specify that the string is unicode.
2. Value stored in the database is '陳尿˜¥'
3. Value displayed on web page (utf8 encoding, no server side changes) is '陳小春'
4. Actual UTF data in the database is displayed on screen as ??? (database value: 人, display value: ?)
5. ASP.net application using the EXACT same queries results in point 4 being displayed correctly (as japanese) but the values that were displayed correctly in the ASP app are now exactly as they are in the database.
Please Help ... My only guess was that the ADO connection was converting the UTF in the database to Non-UTF for display in ASP and the ADO connection in .Net is preserving the Unicodeness of it.
But i did a simple test in ASP where i selected the data, stored it in a variable and then inserted back into the database (non using N'') and well ... i got the exact same .... japanese was japanese the rest was garbage.
Anyone have any ideas???

| Sony Rootkit Removal |
[13 Nov 2005|16:57pm] |
If you have heard about SonyBMG's newest DRM technique, you will know that it opens you up to a lot security problems. Here is how to get rid of the software that they install:
This is copied from: http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=924
This DRM system operates only on recent versions of Windows. If you’re using MacOS or Linux, you have nothing to worry about from this particular DRM system. The instructions here apply to Windows XP.
How to tell whether the rootkit is on your computer: On the Start menu, choose Run. In the box that pops up, type this command:
cmd /k sc query $sys$aries
and hit the Enter key. If the response includes “STATE: 4 RUNNING”, then your machine is infected with the rootkit. If the response includes “The specified service does not exist as an installed service”, then your machine is not infected with the rootkit.
How to disable the rootkit: On the Start menu, choose Run. In the box that pops up, type this command:
cmd /k sc delete $sys$aries
and hit the Enter key. Then reboot your system, and the rootkit will be permanently disabled.
Note that this does not remove or disable the main anti-copying technologies. It only turns off the rootkit functionality that hides files, programs, and directory entries. The main DRM software is still present.

I need help.
Currently, I'm running
- 32MB Radeon 9000 Mobile
In my laptop, I want to upgrade, problem is I'm having trouble finding video cards for laptops.
I'm wondering if anyone knows where I might find a mobile version of Radeon's newer cards, like the 256MB x1800 series and a cooling system to put in.
Thank you!!

| Forms and Forums |
[10 Oct 2005|19:59pm] |
1) I need to create a working submittable form on my site. I can make the form elements (with Dreamweaver and by hand), but how do I get the submit button to send me everything the person fills out?
2) Is there an easy method of creating a good looking and maneuverable forum to integrate into the site? I don't want to go to the free places like EZboard if I can help it, and I don't know where to start.
Details, PLEASE...or at least a link to a tutorial. Thank you so much.

| Tools to combat Spam |
[06 Oct 2005|09:27am] |
Hi there. I'm hoping to get an idea about what recommendations I can get for stopping spam. Here's my idea:
Does anyone remember Earthlink's "verify" tool? An email is sent to an earthlink.net address, and the sender gets a response saying something to the effect of "thank you for your email, however we must verify your identity, please click here to enter your name and a message to send to the user. If you are approved, your email will be sent."
My hope is that I can find something that I can install on my web server, which currently has SpamAssassin, that will allow me to do this or something similar. I've surfed through and seen some info about certain tools that also help *filter* spam, but I'm hoping to find a way to, I guess, automate the administration of a whitelist of sorts.
Any advice? I'll be x-posting this in various communities and on my personal site.
Thanks :)

| Inane question |
[30 Sep 2005|12:10pm] |
Website, running off a remote apache server 2.0.53 Fedora, with a password protected member directory, behind which is a .zip file, which I have the name of.
It's not google cached, and no amount of google hacking will get you anywhere.
There are no php, phpBB or phpNuke exploits workable.
The usual .htaccess and .htpasswd files in the same directory trick won't work (tried it.) The password is encrypted, though not SSL encoded.
I could brute force the server for root access, no trouble. But it's inelegant, and it's my brother Simon's server. He'd laugh his arse off. I want to get to the .zip file, via the pass protected directory, not root access. It doesn't matter how visible it is, 'cause it's only Simon, and he knows I'm doing it, but I'd prefer minimal damage.
Any suggestions?

| Getting the latest Bluetooth for iPaq |

This entry is for everyone with a iPaq h5400 series.
If you have been wanting the latest Bluetooth Stack Support (1.6) but HP dont have it available for download there is something you can do. i found that the High Quality Audio update for the h5600 or something like that works perfectly on the h5400 (even enabling headset profile and audio profiles). No hacks are required and the intaller doesnt even check the iPaq model number. Just download and install. Audio quality is slightly better then under the 1.4 drivers but still not that great (probably due to my crappy headset).
Download link here.
It is meant for the h5500 series h5555 but works fine.

| Graphics card advice |

I need a new graphics card, preferably a Radeon 9800 XT Pro. In your opinion, is it worth the money? I've heard various points of view, but I'm doing my research before I plunk my cash down on a soon-to-be-obsolete purchase. Is there something better out there for a reasonable price? I don't mean simply bargain shopping, but rather through usage and experience, which cards perform better all around?
My specs (which could verily stand to be improved by now): ACPI PC running WinXP Pro AMD Athlon XP-M +1400 NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200 Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC 1.20 GHz, 512MB of RAM
Secondly, I'm looking for a sturdy new case with easy disassembly access. My current one is a flimsy, airtight piece of crap, and impossible to open without contorting my wrists in a very non-human manner. I need one with enough ventilation and room for a myriad of fans, ports, and drives, but reasonably small enough to be handled with ease. Any recommendations?
Thirdly, what equipment sites do you prefer? I use Newegg.com, ZipZoomFly and a couple others primarily for parts, but I'm eager to expand my bookmarks.
All advice would be greatly appreciated.
