I made these with extra pastry from yesterday's Cinder Banoffee Pie. It only had a little bit of sugar in it so I figured it would be fine for something savoury, and I thought the mixed spice would go well with something Middle Eastern. I've also just discovered harissa paste and smoked paprika, both of which are ambrosically delicious, and would never turn down an opportunity to use both of once; so, I decided to adapt this Daily Telegraph* recipe for chermoula squash as a pie filling. No pictures, because I didn't have the skill inclination to fold them into nice neat pie shapes, so they just looked like brown blobs. There was, however, much more to them than met the eye; inside they were sweet, spicy, golden and delicious.

*Please don't think I'm a Conservative! I'm a card-carrying Guardian-reading leftie, but I use a lot of Telegraph recipes. This is because I believe it's a good idea to challenge my political beliefs by reading right- as well as left-wing news sources, but in practice I find all the right-wing news and comment articles too soul-destroying to read much of, so I mostly just read the food section. But it still counts.

Since it's New Years, here are some black-eyed peas for good luck. I don't really know if black-eyed peas are considered good luck on new years everywhere, or just Texas/the south. But anyways, I made Texas Caviar. If you've never had Texas Caviar, it's black-eyed peas, onions, jalapenos, and cilantro in an oil-vinegar dressing, and serve with tortilla chips.

[Current Mood |contentcontent]

made this last weekend for a friends bbq, there was NONE left.

to serve 8(ish) people
what you need:
one bag of new (the small) red potatoes or about 4-5 regular sized red potatoes
1 7oz container of fage yogurt
mayo (do not use miracle whip or whatever fake mayo, it will taste too sweet. if yar vegan, then do what you will same with yogurt lol)
bunch of cilantro, chopped to your likes
chives, " "
1 big purple onion, chopped in thin slices
pepper and kosher salt
vinegar or lemon juice
dijon mustard

to make:
-boil or steam potatoes until a fork goes through easily, or until they taste soft but not falling apart.
-while the potatoes are fresh out of the boiler/steamer, sprinkle vinegar or lemon juice on the potatoes to taste, if you go overboard (like i did) i fixed it by adding 2 more bigger potatoes and more mayo/dijon
-add yogurt, onion and all herbs, saving pepper and salt for last
-add mayo until you reach a creamier consistency but alwasy less than the yogurt
-add dijon, pepper and salt to taste.

it was a very crisp taste, very refreshing. i love cilantro so i added a buttload. i also refrigerated for 24 hours, which you don't need to do but i recommend it is refrigerated at least an hour before serving.
