“Conflict never lies between two people. It always lies between rigid beliefs about the other person and the contradictions they show you. Conflict is always an inside job, but until you realise this, it is easier to blame the other person.”

Previous poll review
In the Candles poll, 28.8% of respondents opted for some kind of citrus, and the same number went for cinnamon or other spice. Not counting "other" (25%), "sandlewood or leather or whatever" came next with 23.1%. Forty-four point two percent of respondents voted for "no candles". ( Reason for poll. )

In ticky-boxes, hugs won with 78.8%, "staying up too late and waking too early" came second with 55.8%, and a leopard wearing multi-coloured claw-polish came third with 46.2%. Thank you so much for your votes! ♥

Reading
DNF the paranormal romance (perky antique shop owner/Ghost of Christmas Past, very holiday, very cosy). Now I'm about five chapters into The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett, read by Andrew Fallaize, though I'm getting through it quite slowly because other things are competing for my earphones.

Last night, Andrew and I listened to a bit more of Memory by Bujold, read by Grover Gardner. I have so little sympathy for Miles that I can't tell if I'm reading the narrative as intended.

Otherwise, DuChinese stories, where I'm transitioning to Intermediate level. New vocab is coming thick and fast, so I'm struggling a bit.

Watching
( Cut for length. )

Listening
I've been listening to a bunch of Lazy Chinese beginner episodes. I can follow some of them, and others just wash over me. (As with all language-learning ever, vocab is clearly going to be my downfall.)

Online life
I keep doing Writers' Hour because it makes me sit down at my keyboard. (I'm otherwise quite fidgety, and also in thrall to language-learning apps.) And hosting Write Every Day to make myself be present, talk to people (♥ ♥ ♥), and keep on top of my email inbox (...and maybe, you know, write?).

Writing/making things
( Little bit whiny. )

Life/health/mental state things
Still running to keep up. Thanks to UK daylight savings, Writers' Hour is now 10am my time, which means I get up and exercise beforehand (and the dishes don't get done in the mornings). I have physio on Thursday to hopefully sort out my ankles. Life is overall good; I'm just a bit tired.

House
On Sunday we moved my bed into the bigger, lighter bedroom and crammed my exercise machine and ebike into the smaller room where I had been sleeping. This completely befuddled the cat. I'm still figuring out where everything goes, but I think it's going to be good. Aside from anything else, it makes changing the sheets a hundred times easier, because my bed isn't crammed into a corner.

Last time I had this configuration, I switched back because of a noisy early-bird neighbour, but they don't seem to be around much atm (unless I've summoned them by moving into the room right by their garden). *fingers crossed, knocks on wood*

Language Learning
( Cut to spare you. )

Food
Cheese scones, which came out pretty good. Last night I made enchiladas. Sometime soon I need to make lemon honey (aka lemon curd), because these lemons won't last forever.

Goals
Move more things between bedrooms and install a hook for the curtain by the exercise machine. Keep up with the apps. Figure out a long-term language-learning plan that gives me a sense of progress and takes fewer hours, because I don't think what I'm doing is sustainable for much longer in the way/at the pace I'm doing it. :-)

Good things
Cdramas and Kdramas. Exercising first thing in the morning. An abundance of apps. My garden looks great (credit: Andrew for much hard work). A bigger, airier bedroom for the summer. Hosting WED, and poking at various stories. Chocolate. Audiobooks. Election season can't go on forever. Hot chocolate.

"When people ask me what I think is the single most important factor in an artist's sustained productivity, I know I'm supposed to say something like "solitude" or "an independent income", or "childcare". All of these things are good and many people have said so, but what I think is better and more important than any of these things is what I call "a believing mirror".

Put simply, a believing mirror is a friend to your creativity - someone who believes in you and your creativity. As artists we can constantly build what I call creative clusters - a Sacred Circle of believing mirrors to potentiate each other's growth, to mirror a "yes" to each other's creativity."

– Julia Cameron, The Artist's Way

(Posting on the interest of getting back into using dreamwidth and between "nap on couch" and "sleep in bed" so it is still technically the 25/10, that's how that works, I'm pretty sure.)

The paper book I'm currently reading is A Treachery of Swans by A. B. Poranek (the paperback edition with the Katherine Britt cover that is so pretty the cat has tried to eat it twice already). I'm halfway through and enjoying it so far --not the point. The point is: I was reading it earlier today and, on page 206, came across the following (bolding mine):
“See the writing here? See how orderly it is?” Aimé turns a few more pages and stops. “Now look at the date.” He points to the top of the yellowed paper, and I suck in a breath. October 25th.

“Convenience trains us to avoid friction [...] But friction is also where so much of life happens. Community is inefficient. Friendship is inefficient. Love is wildly inefficient. All the best parts of being human require us to spend time on one another with no guarantee of what we're going to get back. Art is also spectacularly inefficient, and thank goodness because efficiency isn't the point. Being alive is the point. Creating is the point.”

Went to the protest today with a friend. We left apparently minutes before the police started gasing people.

There's a new movie adaptation of Les Mis in theaters right now and I can't decide if the coincidental timing is very good or very bad -- thoughts?
umadoshi: (autumn - carved pumpkins (wilde_hearts))

Reading: I read Siren Queen (Nghi Vo), which was unsurprisingly gorgeous, and I've started reading Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat (Bee Wilson); I'm also technically still rereading Wilson's The Secret of Cooking, but haven't made recent progress. Oh, and I read a few more chapters of the Dungeon Crawler Carl webcomic.

Last night I suddenly got a normal daily update email from Goodreads. No indication of why it stopped for a couple solid weeks. We'll see if it continues.

Watching: Last night I saw eps. 25-26 of Zhan Zhao Adventures (of 37), so I'm getting there! Just not quickly. I'm still not following the politics well at all, which is in character for me. And during the week [personal profile] scruloose and I saw an episode or two of The Apothecary Diaries.

Weathering: We've had a few rainy, windy days here, but the weekend's weather is looking good. This weather note is really to say that Cape Breton got some snow over the last day or two. o_o Hopefully it isn't sticking around.

Smelling pretty smells: The BPAL Hallowe'en release dropped this week, and after a day or so of agonizing, I (mostly) succeeded in convincing myself (because it's true) that no matter how lovely it all sounds, and despite there being sixteen or so scents I'm interested in (they are on my wishlist spreadsheet, largely in hopes that writing them down has exorcised them from my brain), I absolutely do not need to go in on a decant circle. (Even if it has been about twelve years since I caved on decant circles and I do eventually want to get some newer Samhain...so I can let it age to the point that I like it, but have something newer than 2014.) I essentially don't wear the scents I have; I haven't even tried all of the scents I have (and IIRC have still literally never entirely used up an imp, although part of that is the hoarding instinct, not because I couldn't have worn a favorite enough to be finished with it); the exchange rate and shipping would make it stupidly expensive; and it has been an expensive month here in general.

It did all at least remind me break out my existing Weenies stash and wear scents on a few days.

Farmshare: This is the second-last week of our farmshare for the year (we both lean toward doing it again next year, but the short eight-week one with a fairly small number of openings that's picking up immediately after this one filled up before we decided whether or not to sign up), and by midweek we still had rather a lot of last week's veggies left to work through. Thursday, when we were roughly planning to go do our weekly pickup, wound up being busy and exhausting, so with the end of the farmshare season arriving so soon, we decided to put this week's pickup off until tomorrow (and here's hoping I'm right that the farmshare week rolls over between Sunday and Monday). That'll mean our pickup for the final week is also a weekend one, but we won't be risking a steadily-increasing backlog.

Instead, Thursday night we washed and froze the black kale and celery, the latter of which we also first ran through the food processor. The kale and some of the celery are destined (barring incident) for Samin Nosrat's Tuscan bean and kale soup tomorrow, and that'll leave us some amount of celery for future soups (although so many recipes call for a number of stalks that it'll all be an estimate). Then last night we used up all of our potatoes and leeks and a remaining half of a Savoy cabbage in a second batch of potato leek (with cabbage) soup, so the produce situation is much more under control...until tomorrow.

"Approaching your writing table (or couch) with a sense of guilt will actually create yet another obstacle to writing anything. So try what I call the 'GPS Approach.' ... We used to find our way via outdated maps, wrong turns, and shouting matches. Now we let technology navigate for us. The GPS has no concept of a wrong turn — it simply reroutes us from where we are, and is concerned only with getting us to our destination.

So, rather than expecting to quickly repay the looming debt you owe on the page, just reroute yourself. Every day you write something is new, and everything you write is a victory. You will reach your destination — both faster and happier — if you’re not yelling at yourself from the passenger seat."

Hi, and welcome to Write Every Day! I'm pinchhitting for the rest of the month (and sending [personal profile] dswdiane all the best of get-well-soon wishes). Very much looking forward to seeing what the rest of you are up to, and hoping that hosting will spur me to tackle one of my languishing WIPs. (Which languishing WIP? As yet, unclear.)

I'm in New Zealand, so a day ahead of most of you. Since we're well into the month, I'm going to label each post for my-today and my-yesterday (see today's subject line; tomorrow's post will be day 23/24), so that you don't have a day's break in transmission, as it were.

Please a) check in on the latest available post, and b) tell me what day(s) you're checking in for. I'll add you to the tally.

I haven't been writing much lately, and I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing. I'll go do something now, and then come back to do my own check-in.

ETA: My 23rd: A bunch of edits and additions resulting in a net increase of 128 words. I had to fight my way through a thicket of procrastination to get there, and I'm not sure about the last few lines, so I'll sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.

Other than that, today involved a bunch of Chinese study, lunch at a seaside cafe, lots of sunshine, and recovery from a hard day yesterday.

Hi and welcome, again! Please come in and make yourselves comfortable!
