Marvel's Wolverine: The Big Preview – First hands-on and developer access with the superhero slasher
The Big Preview | After two hours going claws-on with Wolverine, and a snarling chat with Insomniac Games, the Spider-Man studio is still the best there is at what it does
Marvel's Wolverine isn't just the latest game to star the gruff, adamantium-clawed hero, but an expansion of PlayStation's superhero world. Coming from Insomniac Games, who also developed the excellent Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel, Wolverine holds a deserved place as one of our most anticipated new games. Now, visiting the studio in sunny California, we've finally have a chance to play the game for ourselves, and to chat with the developers honing its sturdy skeleton.
It's clear that Wolverine has been developed with the same love and care the studio gave to the web-slinger, but what's striking is how different this adventure feels. Rather than aiming to be one of the best open world games like its predecessors, Wolverine is more structured and action-centric. This is a game based around who he is as a character in his iconic Wolverine suit, and as Logan himself. It makes the game perfect to lead our Big Preview this month. Between our studio access and hands-on time playing, we dive right into everything that sets Wolverine apart ahead of its September 15 release.
We spent a week updating with hands-on impressions and dev access, and you can find the whole collection right here. Below, explore Marvel's Wolverine Big Preview with us on GamesRadar+
Marvel's Wolverine: The Big Preview
Marvel's Wolverine hands-on: Pulling on the yellow spandex for ourselves, we play two hours of Wolverine across the game's first act. A more linear adventure compared to, say, Spider-Man 2, plenty of fun twists with combat and movement help this adventure stand apart when the claws come out.
Marvel's Wolverine will make sure squeamish players never have to see blood and gore: "We don't want to surprise anyone," says head of technology Mike Fitzgerald as we discuss the "extremely bloody game". Not violent merely for the sake of it, Logan's anger towards the story's injustices is pivotal.
Insomniac had to ditch Spider-Man's open-world for Marvel's Wolverine because Logan is "not somebody who has a friendly neighborhood": Director Jess Reiner-Reed talks to us about switching Insomniac Games' gears from Spider-Man to Wolverine, and how they've made this adventure true to Logan.
The 8 Wolverine features we love after 2 hours playing, from Team X to truly brutal combat: The development studio has worked hard to ensure Wolverine feels as true to the character as possible, and that comes through in the highlights of our time playing the game. This is off to a superheroic start.
