Hydrothermal Sn-Be vein-type deposits.
Located about 11 km SE of Gejiu City.
In the Laochang deposit, many mineralization types have been discovered, such as: altered rock-type, skarn-type, greisen-type, tourmaline vein-type, basalt-type and interlayer sulfide and/or oxide-type mineralization.
Veszelyite labeled as from Gejiu City or from Laochang are in fact from the former Kafang open pit.
A geologist from Nanjing University wrote: Gejiu Sn ore field produces Veszelyite and it comes from Kafang deposit in the south, not Laochang. Gejiu is the largest Sn ore field in the world and it comprises five major deposits from north to south and can be further divided into several dozens of ore segments. It is so complicate there that they have several mining companies to explore at the same time. Laochang is the largest Sn deposit in the middle and Kafang is the second largest in the south. Open pit mining in Gejiu has ended many years ago and currently all mining activities are working underground.
Veszelyite on the mineral market from Gejiu is most likely produced from the abandoned open pit besides the Kafang town. It is now filled with water.
