Name:
Named in 1949 by H. J. Nel, C. A. Strauss, and Frans E. Wickman in honor of B. V. Lombaard, professor of Geology, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Nel et al. (1949) incorrectly analyzed the original material and did not detect rare earth elements. Re-examined by H. Neumann and B. Nilssen in 1962 who found that the mineral was related to allanite and contained substantial REE.
An allanite-like mineral.
The original "lombaardite" was a mixture of fibrous "epidote" and dark-coloured tourmaline (schorl) that was analysed overlooking some components (B2O3 etc.).
Fibrous allanite was described as lombaardite from tin deposits of Magadan region in Russia.
Fibrous to thin-prismatic "lombaardite" overgrowing thalÃĐnite-(Y) from Askagen is allanite-(Y).
