When I started thinking about a thesis in January, I knew that I had to do research that has real implications for real people. I also knew that with my research I am obligated, as an educated research, to solve for real problems. I also decided that I would choose a topic that was not only important to me, but important to those around me.
In searching for a topic I thought about that which angered, frustrated, and annoyed me, because if something is to be solved, I have to be the one to do something about any problems I perceive. It was with this thought that I choose to conduct my Senior Undergraduate thesis on Xavier College Prep.
As an alumni, I experienced many conflicting messages regarding my gender. I was constantly encouraged to be pretty, feminine, thin, servile, passive, all the while being encouraged to be myself, bold, comfortable with my body, aggressive, and goal-achieving. I began to realize that I certainly was not the only one to experience this conflict, nor would I be the last to have experienced it either. The problem with XCP sending conflicting messages to its students lies in its attachment to traditional reinforcements of femininity. So long as the students are wearing only skirts, wearing only shades of pink and red, and only allowed to look like the mainstream woman, XCP will be engaging in self defeating behavior. In other words, so long as traditional roles/ images or women are upheld at XCP, it will never be the female empowering school that it claims to be. With that, I give you the following thesis.

Hi everyone,
My name is Maria and I am a class of 2001 XCP alum. I am currently working on my undergraduate thesis, and it is about Xavier. If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, let me know, and spread the word around. The title of the thesis is "Xavier Girls: A Case Study of Same sex, Catholic Education and its Messages About Female Gender Roles".
I am interested in YOU. I want to know what you have to say about the education that YOU are receiving. I want to know what YOU think about the school, your teachers, your friends, and your life as a student at XCP. Everything is completely confidential. If you are under 18, your parents permission is needed. If any of you are interested, please respond to this post.
Please, please, PLEASE spread the word. Tell your older sisters if they are alums. Tell your friends older sisters, your friends, relatives, ANYONE who is attending or has attended XCP within the last 5 years.
Unfortunately, incoming fresh(wo)men will be excluded from this project, as they have not yet experienced Xavier.
