Krankenhauszimmer ist für immer in meinem Gedächtnis verankert als
wäre es die Titanic am Grund des Atlantik. So fühlt es sich an.
Diese eisige Hand, deren unbändige Kraft die Hoffnung mit
gleichgültiger Leichtigkeit in die Tiefe zieht. Ich möchte kein
Mitleid. Ich möchte erzählen, helfen, zu verstehen lehren von einem
Verbrechen an der Seele, das auch heute noch und womöglich für
immer Scham in mir hervorbringen wird. Ich ging durch die Hölle in
den letzten fünfzehn Jahren, in denen ich vergessen hatte – das
Geschehene verpackt und versiegelt in die Dunkelheit meines
Gedächtnisses verbannt hatte. Ich bin fünfundzwanzig Jahre alt und
ich wollte nie ein Opfer sein.

Alicia hesitated just a second too long, she guessed, some part of her hoping that her reluctance to open would shy away the person knocking on her door.
