AROS [BlackSky]

AROS ((Advanced Remote Observation System)) is BlackSky' planned new generation of Earth observation satellites series, aimed at expanding its high-frequency Gen-3 monitoring constellation. AROS will consist of very high-resolution, multispectral imaging satellites optimized for large-area mapping, change detection, and 3D digital twin generation at country-scale coverage.

The AROS constellation is designed to support a wide range of applications, including navigation, maritime awareness, and AI-enabled geospatial analytics, delivering persistent, rapid, and predictable imaging refresh at global scale. It will complement the existing Gen-3 system by introducing broad area search capabilities, optical inter-satellite links (OISL) for fast data delivery, and a proprietary data pipeline tailored for real-time and retrospective AI model training.

Development of AROS has been underway since 2023, and its launch is targeted as early as 2027. The system leverages technology from BlackSky’s Gen-2 and Gen-3 satellites and benefits from vertically integrated production following the company’s acquisition of LeoStella.
