An old opencast manganese mine, working veins and bunches of manganese oxides occurring in a NE-trending bed of siliceous rocks about 12 fathoms wide. According to Boase (1838), the mine was still working around 1838, when it was 20 fathoms deep.
Extra information:
A small manganese working located on the north side of the A395 road.
The mine formerly consisted of open pits linking to underground workings.
It is recorded that it was active prior to 1827, with further activity around 1830 and and a final phase of working between 1875 and 1881, yielding a production of 310 tons of ore in this final period.
The ore body is described as being chert traversed by veins of 'comby' quartz, with the chert having undergone alteration to rhodonite in an irregular manner.
The workings lie on private land and appear to have largely been obliterated.
