Pumice quarries opened in "Pitigliano Formation" ignimbrite (Latera Volcanic Complex, Vulsini District). This products are related to the final stage collapse of Latera caldera (Vepe caldera, 166 ka).

The Pitigliano Formation covers an area of 120 square kilometers and, on the basis of stratigraphic relationship, welding degrees and textural features, is divided into three depositional sequence:
1) Unwelded sequence, formed by white sanidine-bearing pumice. Here the thickness of this sequence reaches 20 m.
2) Welded sequence: more or less collapsed leucite-bearing grey pumices, which produces vitrophyric flames (eutaxitic structure).
3) Lava flow deposit, not observed in Pian di Valle - Nardeci quarries.
At Casale Pietrazzoli quarries, the Pitigliano Formation lies on lacustrine sediments (diatomites).
