The Chariot gold mine is 10 kilometres west of Tennant Creek. The deposit was discovered by Normandy Mining in 1998. Giants Reef commenced open pit then underground mining from 2003, producing 95 Koz at 11 g/t. Ore was processed at its mill at the TC8 mine, half-way between the town and Chariot mine. The TC8 site is presently occupied by an exploration camp. After experiencing difficulties with the underground mining, Giants Reef ceased operations at the mine in 2005.

Emmerson Resources then took over the abandoned mine, and has produced a deluge of mainly marketing information, dutifully promoted by the mining media in Australia. Periodic announcements have been made of new discoveries, including the most recent a potential open pit cut-back. The company states Chariot has a JORC resource of 170 Kt at 17.4 g/t or 99 000 ounces of gold.

The surface contains sands, and laterite, with weathering in excess of 100 metres, turning sediments to clay, and ironstone to hematite. The gold mineralisation is found in two east-west trending zones of ironstone, dipping 85 degrees north, down to 75 degrees north at depth. The two zones are 40-80 metres apart, with the open pit sitting on the northern zone, striking 80-120 metres, with the main ore zone 1-10 metres wide. It overall forms the shape of a flattened pipe.

Gold is hosted in magnetite-hematite-chlorite, with sporadic chalcopyrite associated with quartz, minor pyrite, and trace bismuthinite. Chalcopyrite can form weak zones surrounding the ore at depth.
