São Pedro de Moel is a coastal village in the parish and municipality of Marinha Grande, located in Portugal’s Leiria district. The surrounding coastline is one of the most important regions in Portugal for studying the Early Jurassic period. Its rich fossil deposits, primarily of invertebrates, make this stretch of outcrops a site of considerable scientific significance.

The geological age of the coast of São Pedro de Moel is approximately 200 million years. The rocks forming the sea cliffs belong mainly to the Early Jurassic, with estimated ages between 200 and 190 million years. These rocks formed in a marine environment, when the region was submerged beneath a shallow, warm sea. Limestones and marls containing fossils, such as ammonites and other marine organisms, are common.

When we observe the cliffs of São Pedro de Moel, we are literally looking at rocks that formed during the age of the dinosaurs. This area is part of the Western Meso-Cenozoic Margin and is considered one of the best places in Portugal to observe well-preserved Jurassic strata, being frequently used in academic studies and geology education.

Around 200 million years ago, marine deposition occurred, at a time when the region was covered by a shallow sea. Sediments such as calcareous mud, shell fragments, and marine organisms accumulated on the sea floor. Over time, these sediments underwent lithification, becoming compacted and cemented, giving rise to the present-day limestones and marls.

During the Jurassic, the opening of the Atlantic Ocean began, with the progressive separation of Europe and North America. This process caused tectonic faulting and uplift of the western margin of the Iberian Peninsula, raising the marine rocks above sea level. Subsequently, erosion, mainly driven by the Atlantic Ocean and the wind, sculpted the cliffs that characterize the coast of São Pedro de Moel today.

Uniformitarismo ou Catastrofismo em S. Pedro de Moel?

In: Mesozoico, 24-05-2009.
