Vesicular basalts were exposed in the 1980s during excavations under the Bass Highway for twin concrete culverts to divert Masons Creek under the roadway. One Ulverstone based collector salvaged a limited amount of material one night before the trench was filled. Material collected consisted of soft basalt with vughs containing white phillipsite crystals with fine natrolite sprays along with large (~100 mm) masses of crystallized amber-colored calcite.
Site is now several meters below the dual lane highway.
