Dane County's bedrock consists of Cambrian and Ordovician sedimentary rocks - primarily quartz sandstones and dolostones. Quarries in the dolostone in particular can yield specimens of calcite, quartz and dolomite. A few fringe deposits of the Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-Lead District bear small amounts of galena, sphalerite and associated minerals. Glacial deposits, including glacial lake sediments, obscure the bedrock in most of the county. The diamond referred to below is a 4 carat stone found in morainal sediments near the town of Oregon in 1893.

Madison, a dynamic Midwest American city, is Wisconsin's state capital. An array of building stones are visible in the state capital building. Madison also hosts the main campus of the University of Wisconsin System. Weeks Hall contains U.W.-M.'s highly-ranked geology department and the excellent Geology Museum which has a number of programs and public outreach activities. Madison also houses the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, at which one can obtain publications and maps about all aspects of Wisconsin geology.
