Inactive coal (lignite) mine (1750-1961).

The Cape Mondego Coal Mine was discovered around 1750.
The first works at the mine began in 1773 under the supervision of Dominic Vandelli and Guilherme Elsden, at the time masters of the Coimbra University.
The results were not encouraging until 1802 year in which the works were abandoned due to constant flooding of the galleries.
In 1802 José Bonifácio de Andrade e Silva was appointed responsible of the mines but some years later, in 1819, he left for Brazil and the mine closed. In 1825 the State conceded the mine to some individuals in a leasing agreement. The mine was closed for thirteen years. In 1838 Jacinto Dias Damasio, dealer of Conde Barroso Company, started the coal exploitation at the mines Cabo Mondego, Esperança e Farrobo. However, in 1845, the works were closed once again.
In 1867, Conde Farrobo conceded the exploitation rights of his mine to João Pereira Caldas. In 1870 was created the company Minas de Americano. But in the following year a new company was created, Companhia Mineira e Industrial do Cabo Mondego.
Today, there is no mining activity in the area.
